Shouldn't OS XI come after OS X 10.9?

From version 10.9 to 10.10? So much for sorting OSes in a list.

I've never understood this. Seems to be the norm lately. Let's break the code and see if any notices!

it is an indication that their code base is becoming bloated when making a change in one area to try improving some feature A causes an issue with an older feature B. This is a normal software maintenance issue called hotfix which occurs when you do not spend time to refactor the old on your way to the new. After some time and many hands in the pot the logic just becomes hard to follow and the side effects of one thing become harder to track down.

They need to stop adding features and spend a release just re-organizing the roots.

This update killed the Handoff/Continuity features I'd added on my MBA mid-2011 with the Tutorials posted on this forum. Anyone else...?

Yes killed Handoff on my MBA 2011. I used the Continuity Activation Tool to successfully restore it.

Just don't understand how working code in Mavericks never made it into Yosemite. Like Wifi worked in Mavericks, why isn't it working in Yosemite? Did they purposely break the code?

All these working sub systems, battery, graphics, etc...now having problems don't make any sense to me.

Someone like to explain?

Hi, I'd like to address this question.

As mentioned previously there have been a lot of under the hood updates, more specifically in terms of Threading.

If you notice the Yosemite works with a minimum of Core 2 Duo Processors, this is important because of the threading of these processors (can't remember at the moment exactly what instruction set they are using off the top of my head). Yosemite is all about using up more available RAM and RAM compression (carried over from Mavericks) but brings in far greater usage of Multi-Core processors. This gives better and quicker performance, especially with these newer more enhanced processors. But is relatively more difficult to program for and can result in much more locks. However in the long run this is the way to go.

A similar approach was taken for iOS 8 which works only on dual-core architecture processors running in parallel which is why there was a performance increase. However for OS X, this results in slightly quicker finish times and lower loads. Its a very good move, however there are a few more bugs running around.

Apples investing in the future and if you want, you should never update till a .1 update is released. thats just my 2 cents.

Version numbers are not decimals.
Wikipedia has a succinct summary:
"When a period is used to separate sequences, it does not represent a decimal point, and the sequences do not have positional significance. An identifier of 2.5, for instance, is not "two and a half" or "half way to version three", it is the fifth second-level revision of the second first-level revision."

Perhaps the Parallels issue may well get fixed at last with this update? There seems to be a real issue with one of the drivers which then leads to CPU overload and resultant very slow VM.

This mainly affects mid-2011 iMacs of which there are plenty.

There is currently a vram script that puts the machine into debug mode when this occurs. However, it does need a proper fix. The script is only common knowledge if you happen to have the foresight to visit the Parallels forums or ring Parallels support. For every one else they must be tearing their hair out by now.

No mention of graphic slowdown fixes, of course. Let's focus on the Notes app and maybe the Calculator App.

If the beta is installed, how we will upgrade to the final version, when released? May we have to install the combo update? Or the whole OS?

I really hope it includes a fix for a really annoying bug in how Safari 8 handles CSS:

Whenever a page has a background image with a position set to the bottom of the viewport and the width set to fit the window, so for example:
Code:
background-position:bottom; background-size: cover;
The image is positioned about 50 px below the bottom of the window, making many sites look janky. No other browser does this.

If it isn't, please let Apple know about the issue via https://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

Yup, Safari has some issues dealing with the viewport height.
In my case, and under some circumstances, the viewport is around 50px shorter. It's exclusive to Safari as well.

A delta will be released for 10.10.1.

There are no combos till 10.10.2.

It won't be necessary to install from the full installer of 10.10.1 unless you have a system older than 10.10.

Thank you for your answer. May I ask you where do you obtain this information?

Strange...what hardware are you running on? My late 2013 rMBP boots in about 10 seconds and is faster than ever.
When it comes to RAM usage....well things have changed over the last years. A modern OS will grab about everything it can get to optimise things and make the OS run fast. If an application needs RAM the OS will release it for the application. The more RAM the OS can use the faster your system usually gets!

Also if you still fee your system is too slow... are you using a hard disk? If yes how about upgrading to an SSD? I have upgraded quite a few old MacBooks to SSD and usually the owners ask me if i gave them another machine back as the improvement in speed is insane!

----------

Well....on hardware that fast aren't you better off using the fastest network port available... i.e. Ethernet??!!

:cool::eek::cool:

I'm using a mid 2011 Mini with 4Gb RAM (about to increase it to 8Gb) and it has a 5200rpm hard drive with a 256Mg Graphics card.
Upon start-up there is a line going across the screen like it waiting for some process to finish and it's WAY longer than it used to be.
I will definitely get a SSD for my next computer but I don't want to put any more money into this machine.
If Apple gets serious about actually upgrading the Mini in the next update I will buy one

… I will stop recommending Apple to my friends as a company that sells products "that just work"

There's a very specific, intentionally simple poll:

How likely is it that you would recommend OS X Yosemite to a friend or colleague?

If you choose to vote, please do so:
  • based on your experience with the released build of OS X 10.10
  • not based on your experience with any beta of 10.10 or 10.10.1.

Those release notes aren't real.

Back, to around sixty seconds after the news of 10.10.1 beta was published by MacRumors:

Can anyone confirm if Time Machine is fixed?

Then:

Sarcasm? It's been out like less than an hour.

Normally I would suggest restoring from a Time Machine backup of a pre-sarcasm version of the operating system. However there's sarcasm galore around the released build of OS X 10.10 so I'm not sure what to suggest. Excuse me whilst I go back to the future then back to post an answer to that Time Machine question before it was asked.

It's much easier to say "Ten dot Ten dot One".

Oh s ten dot ten d'oh umm, umm I wonder whether it's less ugly than umm ten point ten. But I should take care to not cause bias before voters respond to that poll ;-)

Not this again!

Sorry. That question accidentally came forward from the past with me, from around the time of the pre-pre-sarcasm release of oh s ten point nine point ah that's better.

The main problem I've had since installing Yosemite (clean install) is the "Computer Name" of my MBPr keeps changing e.g.

[COMPUTER NAME] (1) - [COMPUTER NAME] (2) - [COMPUTER NAME] (3) - and so on...

This is causing havoc with my Time Machine backups!

I've had that since Leopard at various times. Never quite sure why it's various causes actually result in this (possibly sleep/wake problems), but on my Yosemite installation it happens only when Power Nap is enabled.

Might be worth trying for a day or two to see if it helps.

Edit: It may have been "Wake for network access" as another forum member pointed out.

Not to mention that most lists will sort 10.9 before 10.10 (I think Finder is ironically one of the exceptions, but I could be wrong about that).

I was wondering how long it would take someone to corret that. :D

I wanted to do it myself but I didn't have the heart to.

Time Machine is broken? Works fine for me. What's the issue(s) you're experiencing?

All new kit per my signature, including brand new time capsule. I have issues browsing my backups. Specifically it either works or does not. Sometimes it fails to find a time machine backup which is crazy. I also cannot browse using the favourites side bar most times. Oh and the background wallpaper in the time machine gets corrupted, but this is only visual rather than functional.

Insane! I've never had any of these problems! (Although as of the last two Yosemite betas and the public release the Time Machine background was entirely black. I thought this was a design choice)
