Thinking about how I use the scanner at work.

How does the iPad replace the scanner?

There are plenty of apps - but is your company ok with using apps that potentially do the OCR or other image enhancement on servers outside of the company, transferring all the scans over the internet?

My guess is - existing PC users (by which I mean people using a conventional computer, be it a desktop or laptop running windows or macOS) who might not yet be aware of the full capabilities of an iPad. Apple likely wants them to re-evaluate their workflow and ask themselves if they really need a full-fledged PC for what they do, or if an iPad might be a better fit.
The ads don't show anything unique to the iPad and as there are tablets with the same solutions the iPads can do I'm not sure what Apple is trying to do for half the price, I'm clueless what Apple is trying to accomplish here. It could also be an ad for Samsung Galaxy tab or a Lenovo. The ads don't differentiate something solely possible for an iPad. It would have worked in 2010 but it's kind of lame and clueless today.

I didn't know that notability can record at the same time as you're taking notes. That is really smart. But i'm not using my iPad Air enough to justify an upgrade.

Well, the ads don't say the other tablets can't do those aforementioned tasks. They are simply aimed at educating people on what you can do on a tablet (or an iPad, to be more specific), and they are not wrong in that regard.

I think it is not feasible to show complex apps such as workflow or IFTTT because you will likely end up alienating your consumers who are not comfortable with automation and programming.

It's likely all about getting people to associate an iPad with actually getting work done.

Although I think tablets are sufficiently for most people in their day to day doings I also know most people are aware of their capabilities today. The lag of differentiation and setting yourself apart from the competition isn't going to transform people buying an iPad instead of some other brands. Especially today when you can buy good quality tablets for half the price of an iPad is what makes people wonder to buy an iPad. If Apple wants to turn their declining iPad sales they've two choices. A. Make it similar priced with their competitors; B. Make it stand out compared to their competitors. As Apple isn't doing neither of those two it's pure logic their decline will sustain.

Its pretty clear read their mission statement .... future mobile media/ computing device is iPad. They believe you all will take that train.

"Apple designs Macs, the best personal computers in the world, along with OS X, iLife, iWork and professional software. Apple leads the digital music revolution with its iPods and iTunes online store. Apple has reinvented the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App store, and is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices with iPad."

" I'm clueless what Apple is trying to accomplish here?"

In an "all apl world "after all have been dumbed down to a certain intelligence level that may fly. What they fail to realize is most are not in that world and never will be. Some are and they are Maxipad "pro" $850 users that ditched a laptop and don't need more than 4 concurrent apps. People as a whole completely reject the limited Ipad concept as a replacement computer...in some situations its a fine device. My son is using mine as he broke his hand. Its good for that and taking notes in OneNote.

Ipad and chromebook are similar...limited, ipad is pricey too. Hence the #'s and trendline.
Both will see even more at-risk usage as Windows on ARM devices + oems arrive to cover the Chromebook low , and Surface Pros+Oems continue to outpace Maxipad pro'sat the upper pricing levels.

Tablets in effect are dead unless they are mobile slates at full power..like a SP4 type device running a bonafide professional OS. Apl has a lot of work to do to reach parity on this and it means killing either iOS or mac as an OS and simplifying the OS suite across all apl device types

That's very hard and requires a lot of programming voodoo and PR hits see Windows 8, so they are doing the more services route for higher RPU and trying to keep iPhone going with new accessories like Watches, AirPods or AR glasses down the road. Its sort of like timeshares..most say no (too expensive for what you get)

I have an iPad, and I have an opinion, so here goes:
  • What I use it for the most is as a portable tv/movie watcher. I always download movies to the iPad but I sometimes stream tv at home.
  • Typing on the touchscreen is a PITA.
  • A keyboard makes an expensive item too expensive, and since they aren't really a single device usually a pain for travel. I can buy (non Apple) laptops that are cheaper, have touch screens if I want to use them, a better keyboard, storage, standard file formats and media access in one machine.
  • Like other Apple devices the games aren't impressive. Maybe Metal is just as good at rendering as Direct-X but few developers are using it properly if that's the case.
  • I would love to use my iPad to view pictures I have taken with my DSLR camera, but the camera is a few years old and doesn't have built in wi-fi or bluetooth. Using a cable takes forever, and requires (surprise) adapters. A lot of non Apple notebooks can read CF and SD cards using built in slots, and the data transfer is much faster.
When Apple first released the iPad it was different from most items other brands had, and where it wasn't different it was better. But it really hasn't grown very much in functionality, and other manufacturers have taken things that people want and included them in their version of a smart pad. I'll leave out people using iPads as a sketching tool, as I am no artist and could not judge which of the competing devices are better for drawing.

If you want to say the OS is better- not sure anymore. Lack of features may color some of my perception but that lack is real. And as the cost for an iPad has climbed the reasons to use it rather than a laptop has diminished, and the reasons to use Apple rather than Microsoft or Dell or Samsung has also largely been reduced to whose products you already use and how you CAN get data into and out of it.

In the first ad, a Pro in a college situation is a weak connection. The second ad shows an office worker with too many things on her desk (including a desktop)—so she should add yet another thing to declutter?

Besides a smart phone I don’t use portables (so much for the disclaimer). If I needed one, it would have to be something like the Porsche Design Book: full OS, keyboard that folds away, and a screen that detaches into a tablet. Although it’s still something I don’t Need, I’d probably Want one if manual and/or automatic synching of files was a cinch. I can see something like that meriting a Pro tag if powerful enough, but not an iOS device. Maybe I’m just too old school.

I can see a tablet being useful for some, but what’s the differentiation for the Pro? My old school take is the Pro must be a full-featured tablet, and the not-Pro must be a cheaper, hobbled version (i.e., something to avoid if you can afford the better version). I get it: Apple’s use of ‘Pro’ doesn’t mean Professional, it just means extra features, like a letter used in the automotive industry to differentiate, say, an L from a GL or even a GXL.

Gosh!
Is this the future, where you have to have an iPad Pro just to take a note of & mark a part of the skeleton as "Skull" ??? That, too at the age of 14-16?

Question: when Apple releases these ads why is the MR headline always that Apple is "sharing" these? That is a gross perversion of the word. When one shares something they are giving something valuable to another or others: money, food, a ride, one's inner feelings, important information. Ads are not that. Ads are are marketing tool get people to buy products. The point of these ads is not an act of altruism, humanism, kinship, or friendship. They are for Apple's benefit. Nothing wrong with that but Apple isn't "sharing" them with us it is foisting them upon us just like any other ad. (These ads are not even that good. If it was sharing it would be like chicken pox not chocolate).

So c'mon respect the word and ditch the "shares" in reference to ads. Leave that for actual sharing and preserve the meaning of the word. Just state that Apple releases new ad. Very matter of fact, which is what reporting is suppose to be.

Pet peeve is "seeding" betas too. (Always marketing)

This is so irritating. My ipad is a nice photo viewer with good color accuracy but keeping a dongle handy to transfer photos on the go is just lame. The process could not be less simple.

Have you eve seen a commercial aimed at automation or programming ? Apple is positioning the iPad Pro as a basic laptop replacement and you are moving the goal posts about it being used by professionals . Let's wait for these ads and have a chat after....they will not happen

Actually apple has a completely different definition of pro, it's about extra $$$ and nothing to do with the notion of people who consider themselves pros.

I stated at the top it was an opinion.

You don't think carrying an adapter is lame.
I do.

Both are opinions. And do you know what makes either of them right? Nothing. They are personal preferences.

I'm unsettled by the fact that a professor is somehow unaware that students have been recording lectures since the advent of the portable tape recorder. And also that a professor would use "apple_iBoy" as a screen name.
Exactly what I was thinking

I don't know what kind of work you do, but do you expect that your professional conversations are recorded without your knowledge or permission?
When you're a teacher lecturing to your students? Yeah, obviously. You'd have to have your head buried in the sand to think otherwise.

Apple's marketing (and every other companies) exists to sell you products and potential of the device. Not sell you common sense.

All that aside if you're too cheap to buy a $10 app then these devices aren't for you.

Spare me your judgement. My money is fine. It's not about the money.
