I love my mini! I don't want them to make it cheaper. Well, of course I want to pay less... but I don't want an iPhone SE. I want a full featured top of the line iPhone with a screen size of the mini. I love mine! Hopefully it's not a product line that gets canceled. To me it's the perfect size.
This right here. Everybody complaining about the price seems to want a flagship, reasonably-sized phone for a rock-bottom cheapo Android price. That’s just not reasonable.

People who want a cheap iPhone — that’s what the SE is. The rest of us want the same phone everybody else is getting: the flagship $1000+ phone with all the features and good cameras. We just don’t want it in a 1.2lb brick that doesn’t fit in any pockets.

No interest in a 12 or a 12 Pro?
Yes, but not enough to purchase. The mini was different to the degree that I could justify it, where the 12’s are similar enough that I don’t want to spend the money and effort (I know it’s not a lot, but still) to upgrade. And I’m very happy with the 11 Pro! It’s perhaps my favorite iPhone ever. They’re all good, and it’s not leaps and bounds above any others, but just as a total package I’m very happy with it.

I truly love the Mini. It’s not my cup of tea, I use a Pro Max. I like what it offers in a small package. But I simply haven’t seen anyone with one. Nor do I know anyone with one. Makes me think this iPhone might not last beyond this year which would suck.
Much like Apple, apparently, I’m very surprised it‘s not doing better. I don’t think I’ve seen one in the wild, and none of my non-tech friends or family have asked about it. I also hope the form factor continues, even just as a replacement for the SE.

The mini is a great phone I just think people wanting a smaller phone want a smaller price tag to go with it.
No they did not. If you go through the threads where people complained about the form factor, a lot of people said that they would pay the full price for the same phone in a smaller form factor. It's not exactly the same phone because some things could not physically fit in the smaller case but it's also cheaper. I don't remember anyone saying that a smaller iPhone should have a smaller price.

I do remember one user being extremely angry and vocal, accusing people not sharing his views that they just don't get it, almost calling them stupid and now is whining in this thread that the phone is too expensive.

Apple might have been well served to name it the iPhone Air or something instead of “mini”
That part I can agree with. The branding is bad.

it’s weird to me that customers think smaller should be cheaper. It was the opposite in the early days of cell phones because it’s a greater challenge to engineer the same features into a smaller package.

The Mini is a great phone, but it's stuck in a weird spot in Apple's line-up right now.
In the US at least the carriers don't help things. These homepages reflect the basic state of iPhone promotions since the mini launched:

Customers are greeted with either a free 12 Pro, a discounted 12 or 12 Pro Max, or a free 12. There is no mention of the mini anywhere on the home page, with or without a sale. When it is on sale, such has how it's free on ATT right now, you have to to the mini's device page to learn that. And it's not like refreshing the page changes what devices it highlights.

You really can't make this up. Steve Jobs was spot on when he said the following:

“Some people say, "Give the customers what they want." But that's not my approach. Our job is to figure out what they're going to want before they do. I think Henry Ford once said, "If I'd asked customers what they wanted, they would have told me, 'A faster horse!'" People don't know what they want until you show it to them. That's why I never rely on market research. Our task is to read things that are not yet on the page.”

My impression of the unveiling of the iPhone 12 mini was cute
Just that, not sarcastic, that is was cute they managed to shrink an iPhone and sell it to the masses.

But during the keynote, this was basically what happened
Apple: "I know a lot of you have been asking for something a little different"
Nobody:
Apple: "This is iPhone 12 mini"

Here's what I remember, users had been asking for a bigger (screen) phone since the iPhone 4 era (1) (2)

It's right here on the AT&T home page. In fact, the mini gets the first iPhone 12 spotlight. Can't blame the carriers when the product itself is weak.

That's not the wireless homepage, but it's also after the fold and right next to promos with bigger numbers. Most people that go to att.com instead of googling ATT are either going to hit one of the top promos or click the wireless tag at the top. They are unlikely to do two scroll downward to see that promo. So, yeah, not much of a consolation. Also, the page does nothing to point out that the 12 is just an oversized version of the same phone.

That's the AT&T front page. It's about as big a splash as possible.

Below is the wireless shopping page for Verizon.

Quite frankly, if sales relied heavily on carrier home pages, the Samsung Galaxy would be the best selling device right now. It simply doesn't work that way.

Who would have thought?

Nobody wants to pay $699 for a tiny 5.4" display.
That’s not what all the forum users that were crying for a smaller iPhone were saying. Money was no object said the vast majority, with some wanting (still wanting) a mini Pro and how they’re willing to pay for it (which is a crock). Apple made an iPhone mini and then the whining about the cost begins to provide cover for something that simply doesn’t sell in this market anymore.

The dirty secret was that most people simply wanted a cheaper FaceID-based iPhone and were willing to sacrifice screen size to get it. Now the excuses begin about why they won’t purchase it. If only the whining and complaining would stop, but that won’t happen. Just excuses from know nothings telling Apple that it’s Apple’s fault they won’t buy the mini when the reality is they were never going to buy it because of the price.

That's not the homepage, that's the view all smartphone section. It's barely even visible and is not being promoted there.

Saying that users wanted bigger when the starting point was 3.5" is not really relevant when today's starting point is 6.1".

It's not a "sacrifice." If the mini and the 6.1" 12 were reversed in price, I'd still have gotten the mini. The size is a feature, not a bug.

I remember a lot of people asking for a iPhone 4 size phone with no bezel. They wanted a bigger screen not a bigger phone.

Consumers who want to buy an iPhone will browse to the iPhone page to check out their options. The iPhone isn't new and people don't click the first button they see before signing up for a 24+ month contract.

My wife uses an iPhone 12 mini, and it completely makes sense for her being her hands are very small, its a great little phone to be honest. I have used it on multiple occasions and its such a great, powerful little package. I believe it does appeal to a niche audience, but there's no doubt its a great device to use regardless. Also how much cheaper does it need to be to appeal to people? I believe its fairly priced for the performance you get, and in a smaller package I would think it would actually be a little harder to manufacture than the bigger ones.

You are right that we do want a mini pro, because the point was a small flagship not a faster SE. The mini as it is now is a great phone that is selling well considering it get little press, promotions, advertising, or consumer education. It has to compete with the 12 which is the same phone with a higher MSRP (suggesting it has more features), the Pro and Pro Max - all of which have carrier discounts that make it cheaper than the mini.

I bought a mini and love it. I haven't heard anyone who has a mini complaining about it. But that's likely because they had to actively go searching for it so they likely already knew it was what they wanted. Meanwhile free 12's and 12 Pro's are being shoved in everyone face.
