Pardon the ignorant question here, but I have a 16" M1 Pro MacBook Pro that I am currently pairing with the smaller 22" LG UltraFine 4K display. My Studio Display is expected to arrive next week (fingers crossed) and was wondering, is it possible for my MacBook to power both the LG and ASD? It looks like according the Apple that my computer can indeed power two monitors, but I'm not quite sure what I need to connect them both and how it exactly works. If it can't be done I am happy with just selling my LG. Thank you in advance for your help!

Yep... 16" MBP can power both those displays at the same time. Only caveat is they both need to be connected directly to the MBP and not daisy chained with one another.

For those of you who already have the display, would you recommend it? I did order on announcement day but then cancelled because I wasn't sure about spending over $1.5k on a display that had the same panel as the the old 5k iMac and had a single backlight.

Given I can't afford a pro display I'm reconsidering. What do current owners think?

I'm happy with mine. If you want a 5K display with built in speakers and camera, eithere the ASD or the old LG 5K are pretty much your only options. For the small price difference I can't see many people going with the old LG much any more.

I had the LG 5K and find the ASD much more stable If you so much as bumped my desk or tried to move my MBP at all the LG would flicker off and on and lose the connection. The ASD is rock solid when I move my MBP around to dust or whatever.

The ASD is certainly not the budget monitor choice of course, but if you can afford it, it is hard to beat for its intended use as I see it.

My friend says MS Teams doesn't work properly with the camera. Zoom works fine but Teams is way off kilter vertically, because it doesn't seem to work with Center Stage on this display. The display needs to be tilted down for the camera to have the right framing.

Once Teams is updated this should be fine, but the iOS default should be better. Even if it had to resort to using a wide angle view for apps that didn't support Center Stage, that would still be better than cutting off someone's chin.

I ran into this SAME issue, but then discovered how to fix it. You go to "control panel" at the top of the Mac OS, Choose "Video Effects" and turn on "Center Stage" Teams works great now for me.

Where? He finds nothing in Teams or the System Prefs.

Anyhow, it shouldn't default this way IMO. Personally for some usage I'd rather have Center Stage off, while still maintaining proper framing.

Maybe he hasn't looked in the actual "control panel". Thats the icon with the two slider buttons showing next to the time/date.

Thanks. That worked.

However, he says if he turns off Center Stage, it goes back to the incorrect framing again with part of his head cut off. This was not a problem on his iMac.

Apple needs to fix iOS so that it provides the correct default framing on the Studio Display. IMO, Center Stage shouldn't be required just to get reasonable framing.

In general, if something it is too much of a potential remorse afterwards it’s probably better not to bother with it.

That said, I love mine, still in the honey moon phase though. I still don’t have the camera fixes (firmware is still at 15.4), but the rest is slick, solid, accurate, sharp, modern… I had two Apple TB Displays for the last 10 years and swapped one of them for one of this (gave the older one to a brother of mine) and expect this one to last also 10 years (that’s how well built they tend to be). AppleCare+’ed it for peace of mind.

Regarding the “same panel as the 5K”, not quite so, at least not tweaked the same way, as alluded here:
for starters, it’s 600nits vs 500nits. But I don’t really know, and I find it great so don’t really care either if it were the case.

In any case, even if it were the exact same panel, it wouldn’t have the same feature set, same speakers, same case, build, A13 chip, etc.

I got an iMac 5K 2020 (next to the Studio Display and TB display) and that screen still rocks massively, it’s great but I don’t care about 27” 1080p 240Hz “HDR400” and inaccurate colors or the scammy sibling 4K one which is still the same real state of the 1080p just more pixels (these resolutions should be only for 21” or 24” max). But understandably for some that’s what works, especially games.

My .0002 cents.

It's not the same panel. Similar, but not the same. It's still manufactured by LG, but it has a different part number.

EDIT:

I've been looking for the reference, but I can't find it anymore. Hmm... iFixit claims it's the same panel, but gives no evidence for this.

Happy with mine too. My LG 5k didn't flicker but I could see it wobbling sometimes when I was typing. The speakers sound way better on the ASD to me also. Very glad I returned the LG and got the ASD instead.

I am doing lots of meetings (Webex, Google and Teams) and found the Studio Display audio/speakers really annoying, almost impossible to understand what somebody is talking.
Too much bass and sort of bubbling voices due to spatial/surrounding effects.
I got somehow better results going in MIDI app and choosing stereo setting. But there is no bass control whatsoever.
Most of the time I switch to the MBP speakers and all is okay, finaly clear voices. I wonder what Mac Studio and MacMini owners will do without other speakers available?!

This experience also rise the question what is the use of this sophisticated speaker system?
-Meetings and FaceTime - useless
-Music maybe, but music professionals use stereo, not surround.
-Games will be a good application but again cannot connect an Apple TV, PS, Nintendo to the Studio Display
-Movies also a good application, but you are limited, only the TV app or some streaming services in a browser window like 20 years ago. No Netflix, Hulu apps for MAC. And again, will be diferent story if could connect an Apple TV to the Studio Display
-FCPX maybe some professionals, but for home use not realy?
Hmm... Only done two meetings since getting the studio display. One via Teams and one via Zoom. Not having any of the issues you're describing. Voices came through nice and clear. The EQ on the ASD speakers is definitely bass-heavy. I think it's still being fine tuned. Definitely not as neutral as the speakers in the new MBPs.

Other testing so far, music sounds great on this display. Movies, YouTube stuff, whatever, so far are all pretty good. I'd still say these are some of the best sounding integrated speakers I've heard in a monitor. Probably the best with a bit more tuning. Definitely an upgrade from the integrated speakers in the iMac Pro.

Are you on the latest firmware for the display? What system are you driving the display with and which OS v? I'm running on an M1 Max MBP with macOS 12.3.1. I've seen some discussions on Reddit that are starting to align a lot of the common issues/complaints with the ASD with Intel based Macs and/or Macs not up to running 12.3.1 (current Monterrey release build) or newer. ...which is really crappy if there is correlation.

Other than Apple still needing to finish with the webcam fixes, my biggest complaint is the ASD isn't space grey. Mounted on my black arm in my office the back of the display looks white until you get close to it.

Agreed, I do have to tilt the ASD to get proper framing. But all things considered that's an easy workaround until apple fixes it. If. They. Can.

yeah, just connect both to your laptop. That's what I do and it works great

If you need 5K resolution and/or you care about design and build quality, go for it.
Otherwise, you can find good alternatives.

This might have been asked before, but I can't seem to find the answer by a simple search.

Can someone tell me the amount of inches between the surface of your desk/table and the bottom of the bezel on the Studio Display if you bought the regular tilt one?

I would love to save a few dollars if a height adjustable one is not needed (and I can seem to find stock of the tilt one), but I also realize if you're going to spend that kind of money on monitors, might as well get the ones you want.

My current LG monitor is 5 inches from the desk to the bottom of the bezel and I haven't adjusted it once. If the Studio Display is similar, I think I could get away with the tilt one.

Thanks

Approx 4.5" from desk to bottom of bezel and a little over 5" to screen. That's what my 27" iMac was so I'm lucky in that this height is what I'm used to.

Thank you for this comment! Have they changed the height on the 27 iMac's over the years? I had a 2012 27 inch iMac and I had no problems at all with that height.

Mac Studio (height 3.7") fits below the screen with about an inch margin
Too tall for my 30" Cinema Display, which only has about 3.5" of clearance.

My 2010 and 2017 27" are identical from the front.
