"The 15-inch MacBook Pro was rated overall with a score of 75 out of 100, ahead of a 64-rated Toshiba Satellite (the Pro costs $2,000, the Toshiba $700). "

Well for $1300 more I surely hope it finished ahead of the Toshiba.

Consumer reports mean nothing. Apple notebooks have always had a history of failing. Heck I even heard one of the iBooks had a 75% failure rate.

Oh, okay.

Could you provide a link to an article or publication that is as exhaustively detailed and recorded as Consumer Reports that shows this 'history of failing'? I'd be interested in reading it..

..though of course I highly doubt any reliable documentation like this can be produced.

You can get a 15 inch Dell with a 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 6GB of RAM, 500GB hard drive, 512MB Radeon, 9-cell battery with Blu-ray for $1879. Apple's cheapest 15 inch notebook is $1999 and only has 2 gigs of RAM, 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 250GB hard drive, 9600M GT 256MB, and a DVD burner.

Buyer's remorse. People who bought Apple notebooks want to justify their purchase. I own an iMac, I like the iMac, but I can't see a reason to get an Apple notebook when they are so overpriced, underpowered and lack of configurations.

I have no doubt that there are people who are daunted by how much macs cost. I can even say that if macs go up in price too much more that I would possibly think about buying a PC. But I would certainly never say that PC's do all that I want, unless their OS gets a lot better.
In short as long as I can afford macs I'll buy macs, because I know that I'll just spend the next two to three years saying to myself I shouldn't have compromised.

Well it's not like people who bought pcs couldn't have afforded to buy a mac if they really wanted to, just like mac users who bought dell displays could have afforded to buy apple displays. but they looked at their needs and what the competition was offering and decided the dell monitor was the best value for the amount spent.

Yes, you cant see a reason, I can see many reasons.

Do you understand that?

Perfect timing!

After working on my buddy's laptop for 2 minutes, having Firefox crash twice, and being pestered by Vista to "allow or deny", I thank God for Macs.

The Gauntlet Has Been Dropped

Of course the mac laptops are superior to others. I recently made the switch. I owned a Dell Latitude as my "college" laptop and it did last me 4 years. But that was not without 2 HD replacements, a bad NIC, faulty wireless card, broken casing, and most annoyingly the ungluing of those retarded rubber footings on the bottom causing my laptop to "rock" every time I typed. Now that I am a graduate student I am glad I made the switch to a MacBook Pro 15". Consumer reports is just confirming what I have thought since the day I bought this machine. Double the price gets you double the value as far as construction and usability goes. That being said, I hope Windows 7 lives up to Microsoft's promise of a OS that is actually usable. Vista has really hurt the PC market.

There is no way to justify buying an Apple notebook. I mean seriously, your only configuration for a 15-inch + notebook starts at $1999? Wow. Even if the Dell's notebook matches the MBP's configuration (even though the Dell still has superior specs), the Dell is $700 cheaper.

Unbelievable.

tell that to the mac users who went with the dell display. they will let you know it's an amazing deal since the dell display does everything apple display does and more!

omg bose = expensive, that must mean it's awesome!
.

BMW= expensive........doesnt mean that they are awesome. Guess I'll get a kia.

I want a small, fast computer with multi touch, great battery life (this toshiba gets 1 1/2 hours max on power saver, which is so underpowered it has trouble with multiple tabs open) a webcam, a good design for the power plug (soldering a new one for my dell was a pain in the ass), and OSX.

I can see the macbook fitting my needs. I don't give a damn about gaming, and I dont care if I could get a processor thats faster on paper, but not going to effect my useage at all.

SEE HOW THE HELL THAT WORKS!?

I think that just goes to show that pc and mac reliability are similar since they user the same components in the first place. And the premium they charge for the same hardware is well over what osx and design is worth.

Don't just lump all mass-produced products in the same category. Mass produced products are in the high end and low end. Don't fool yourself into thinking that a $700 computer has the same parts as a $1500 computer. Don't think that netbooks have equivalent quality parts to Macbooks.

BTW, those rescuecom numbers you reported are only based off calls that came into rescuecom. I had never heard of them until you mentioned them. No other company is more respected in this field than consumer reports. They have been doing this for decades. The report that you're citing is from a relatively unknown company that is in Syracuse and they have had exactly three annual reports.

have one of those XPS and I have been very impresed. The only thing wrong with it is the drive is a little loud. that happened when my parrot landed on the open screen and when she took it tipped the computer enough to cause the XPS to fall victim of gravity, it plunged 4 feet. No cracks or any other damage. Just lucky I guess.

Surely that's a double edged sword. If it cost twice as much you'd expect twice the performance. If the MBP was only 10% better I'd score it less than the Toshiba. So for it to cost that much more and get a better score the user experience must be second to non.

No. I don't - I could get all that (and more - with the exception of OS X) on a PC for under $600.

Apple stole from you.

Apple should price the MacBook (White) at $799, a 16 inch MacBook for $999, MacBook Pro 15 inch for $1599 and MacBook Pro 17 inch for $1999. It'd make a lot more sense.

Many Mac users, especially designers and graphic artists, are more productive on the Mac platform than on a PC. Many of them earn a great deal of money and their time is quite valuable. You don't have to have a wild imagination to figure out how $700 might be irrelevant to someone like that.

And generally, it's easy to imagine that such a price difference would be irrelevant to someone who doesn't want to deal with viruses, activation headaches, and less reliable hardware and software, especially when you consider that Macs have both a higher resell value and have a longer lifespan.

But whatever. I say, buy what you want. I'm amused that what others buy seems to bother you so much.

Apple stole from me?

I dont even own a mac!

Tell me where can you get multitouch implemented as well as Apples on a sub $600 PC?

Honestly l, this comes as little surprise to me. Reasoning behind this isn't only due to superior build quality or 'cool' features, but the Apple Care subscription included. Also, in-store experience has a lot to do with customer satisfaction on a device.

You don't even own a Mac? what the heck....? At least I own a Mac.

And who cares about multitouch? Has to be the most useless gimmick ever.

Ah and here it is. So what YOU think is the truth

Yes I dont own a mac, why is that a problem for you?

I love multitouch, I first fell in love with two finger scrolling and it has only gotten more useful to me from there.

Dont dictate to me what i find value in.

Well being in college I can only afford (or even want) one computer. Also, a laptop is the better choice for most college students. I also want to use OS X. Guess that just leaves a Mac laptop as an option. The backlit keyboard, trackpad and form factor are also amazing. The world would be so bland if everyone thought like you. Thank goodness for freedom of choice.

I am not bothered by people buying it - I am bothered by Apple selling it. Way too expensive, and there are not a lot of configurations.

IF you don't own a Mac why are you defending it/Apple? Don't get me wrong I like the Mac but the fact is they are overpriced and underpowered.

There are multitouch addons for PCs if you want it that bad, and they cost only like $40 but I still laugh at those gimmick gestures.

If you find value in it why haven't you bought it yet, and how come you think it is value?
