That's interesting, since I use voice + data on EDGE all the time. (T-Mobile Germany)

No, you don't. Unless you have UMTS coverage, people can't call you while you are surfing the web, and likewise, if you are making a call, there won't be any data transfer. That's the problem with 2G/GSM, and also with the incredibly stupid, antiquated CDMAone technology Verizon and friends use as the basis for their network in the US (a technology, by the way, that doesn't even have a built-in concept of such simple things as roaming in foreign countries or a standardized format for international numbers).

You mean that the Verizon ads are working, right - since Apple and AT&T seem to be compelled to counter them?

I'll shine a light (to your horror) on your subconscious tip of the hat to Apple, what with glowing glass orbs in Windows, Laptop Hunters, and dancing Microsoft Store employees in brightly-colored t-shirts. *shudder*

"Misfit toys" is still my favorite.

Because as a Windows Mobile user you find the theme familiar and comforting? :p

There goes your point, down the drain . . .

To guess that Verizon has zero dropped calls is silly. All carriers have dropped calls. I've had Sprint for 10 years and have had about a dozen drop calls. Most were when traveling outside a major city. Why do you think Apple went to Verizon first? Because At&T had a better network? Everyone I know that has an iPhone says the service was much better with their previous carrier.

Not me. AT&T is better in Metropolitan DC (Northern Va). So you can't say that anymore.;)

I'm finally registering on this site just because I gotta say, I find the fanboyism of some of the people on this site so damned hilarious. I mean, I know, it's a MacRumors site, so having a bunch of die-hard Apple fans is to be expected, but it's just so funny as hell to find the ways that people like Goona, *LTD*, and LagunaSol find to justify how Apple and anything related to Apple (in this case, AT&T) can do absolutely no wrong whatsoever and are superior to everything everywhere.

I mean, you do understand that Apple, AT&T, Google, Verizon, etc., are only out to make money, right? They just pursue this in different ways- and Apple just has happened to stumble on a very successful formula. But that formula is, ultimately, for one goal: making money. As much as possible. The same for AT&T, the same for Verizon. Not to say there's anything wrong with doing so, but to think anything else is absolutely absurd.

And also, like ALL companies, Apple and AT&T have their problems, and aren't for everybody. I see someone like Goona constantly spouting the "80 million subscribers" over and over and over and over, as if that magically means AT&T is perfect and above reproach just because they have that many- I mean, open your eyes, even die hard Apple fans will freely admit that AT&T is terrible for them. Just because Apple went with AT&T, does not mean AT&T is perfect. Open your eyes, stop being a blind zealot, and realize that just because you purchase a product or service from a company, does not make that company infallible.

This applies just as much to Verizon, Motorola, Google, Microsoft, any damned company. The blind ignorance so many people on here show is just so amazingly humorous to me- because I don't understand how people can delude themselves so much. But it's hilarious seeing these people splurge out and think they're making amazing arguments and counterpoints to utterly pointless online fanboy spouting in the first place.

And before anyone says anything- no, I don't own an iPhone. Yes, I own a Droid. Yes, I own a PC laptop, running Windows 7. But I use Macs every day at work, I recommended to my parents to buy an iMac, and I still recommend them for many of the people I know, based on their individual uses. I recognize the strengths and weaknesses of each platform, and how each works for me. Because that's what it should come down to: what works the damned best for you. Not what brand it is. Not because some company you're obsessed with chose a carrier to service their product. What. Works. For. You. And for me, a Droid worked. For my parents, a Mac worked. For my video-editing friend who owns a Mac Pro, an iPhone worked. But just because it works for you, doesn't mean the company producing it should become some infallible noble corporation that cares about the consumer only and all competing companies are the horrific scum of the Earth with no redeeming qualities. Use your brain. Don't be like Goona. Think for yourself, make your own damned choices, and ignore the fanboys. We'll all be better off.

Of course, I don't really know why I'm even bothering to post this. It'll just be ignored, or the fanboys will reply with counterarguments that completely miss the point, and it won't change anything. But sometimes, it's good to vent. And I'm sure those replies will be just as funny as the rest of this thread, too.

Congrats on your first post to an Internet Message Board. For future reference, you can forgo any statements relating to the obvious and get straight to the fanboy jingoism and flame-bait.

On the topic of missleading ads and all... One of the most annoying things about the iphone for me is how many button presses it takes to do simple tasks. From taking the phone out of my pocket to a phone call could be as many as 5 actions before I can dial a phone number.

So watch this ad again. The make it look easy to use another app while on the phone. Watch the call timer. Apple has edited out 10 seconds of fumbling around on the call to get where they want. If they want to show how easy it is to use the phone, isn't that a bit missleading?

Verizon's ads not only attacked AT&T but they also indirectly attacked Apple by encouraging consumers to not purchase an iPhone because of AT&T's network. It was only a matter of time before Apple responded with their own ads. The ads are simple but they are also very effective.

Extremely effective? Hardly, most non tech people probably just shrugged their shoulders and said who cares. Verizon directly attacked AT&T and Apple in their ads. Apple didn't even mention Verizon and just gave a vague "your network". All along people on this forum have been worrying about Verizon pissing off apple and not getting the Iphone. After seeing these pathetic ad's I think Apple doesn't want to piss off Verizon.

all dandy, if your area is covered...

Thats nice that you can do that with AT&T, but it doesn't change the fact that I can't use that feature. I and a significant portion of the nation live in areas that aren't covered in their 3g network, yet I would still have to pay the extra fee for the 3g coverage... that doesn't exist! No thanks AT&T, until you can actually bring the 3g coverage anywhere close to me, I won't be getting an iphone.

Nice commercials, hit em where it hurts Apple and AT&T.

Don't you have to be in an AT&T 3G service area for this feature to work anyhow? Looking at the AT&T 3G map it looks extremely spotty to me and millions of customers will never get this feature. They are going to be upset when their phone can't do what Apple says it is supposed to do.

AT&T doesn't think people who live in rural areas deserve the latest in technology. Verizon makes a great 3G network available to everyone, AT&T makes it available only in large cities and metro areas. Verizon cares about providing everyone with a great network. AT&T only cares about making the most money with the least amount of investment.

Not getting an iPhone makes a lot of sense in your case.

I've got an iPhone because I live in an area with good 3G coverage. Being able to use voice and data at the same time has actually helped me out numerous times.

If I traveled frequently to a lot to places where AT&T did not have good 3G coverage, I may not have gotten an iPhone.

Right now there is no 100% right answer for everyone, so we have to make the better choice for each of us.

Verizon doesn't have anything to worry about with these ads. Because word of mouth does more damage than ads ever could. I don't personally know a single iPhone user who doesn't constantly complain about AT&T's awful network.

Not to mention the fact that these ads are showing all of this being done on 3G. Even here in the heart of SoCal, AT&T drops you from 3G to EDGE to GPRS all the time. Around here you'll spend more time on GPRS than you will on EDGE or 3G. When you do get 3G and go to make a call then the network drops you back to EDGE or GPRS.

So basically, these ads are false advertising in a sense because AT&T can't even keep you on their 3G network.

And the "Island of Misfit Toys" ad is definitely the best commercial of the year. Who cares how cool your device is when you can't even use it as advertised because the network its on is absolutely terrible? I love my iPhone, but AT&T's service has degraded to the point where it's basically a super expensive iPod touch with a camera.

All companies care about making money....they have to...otherwise they would not survive.

AT&T 3G covers 75% of the population. Not a bad start. I'd rather have a company invest and expand in a superior network than support a dead-end one like CDMA. AT&T's 3G is at 3Mb now....will go to 7Mb then 14Mb. CDMA is stuck where it is....1.4Mb.

Yes, eventually all carriers will go to 4G. That is still years away before you and I get to take advantage of it. Until then, AT&T has a growth plan.

God this debate is silly. For most people, the fact that they can use it outside the US is moot, because most people don't travel outside the US that frequently. Look at your market. This is a consumer product that is finally moving into the business segment. Blackberry, whom for the most part uses both gms/cdma radios understand that, because they are business first phones.

The next iphone will be a cdma/gsm hybrid like Blackberry. Just wait.

Why would they do that? GSM is used in just about every country and by AT&T (and T-Mobile) in the US. Why would they add a CDMA radio? They'd only need one if they were going to be used on Verizon's or Sprint's networks, which I don't see happening. (Could happen though)

The iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3GS are DTM-capable phones.

"Dual Transfer Mode (DTM) is a protocol based on the GSM standard that allows simultaneous transfer of Circuit switched (CS) voice and Packet switched (PS) data over the same radio channel (ARFCN). DTM is a 3GPP baseline R99 feature.
A mobile phone which is DTM capable can be engaged in both CS and PS call and simultaneous voice and packet data connection in GSM/EDGE networks."

"X-Gold 608:This is the baseband processor used in the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3GS.It is also known as the PMB8878."

All AT&T needs to do is re-upgrade their EDGE network to support voice/data transfers and they got 3G all over the US.

EDGE after all is a 3G technology according to ITU rulings. It's just since it isn't fast enough on AT&T's network it stepped down to 2.75G.

Yeah we should expect anything positive from you with regards to Apple.

Exactly, this is what Apple and AT&T are clinging to then they are in deeper **** then I thought.

It doesn't respond to the main issue with AT&T and the point of Verizon's ads.. it's terrible 3G coverage. The city I live outside of, Asheville NC doesn't even have 3G coverage and it's a metro of about 400k. Hell we hardly get decent coverage with EDGE here nevermind 3G.

Goona, did you even read his post? Seems like it was pretty positive about the Iphone to me....

Was there some "loyalty test" that we were supposed to pass in order to comment here?

Yes, if you don't blindly follow ads and conform to Apple then you are just a troll.

Amazing speed

Does anyone actually believe that an iPhone can do the things you see in the ad - at those speeds? I've never seen one that does it quite that fast (3G or 3GS). Truth in advertising, dare to dream.
