There's no real reason why Apple can't do the same. Blaming it on the auditorium size is a bit silly of them.
It wasn't the best choice of words, but it's not the physical size of the town hall that makes streaming prohibitive; it's the internet infrastructure. You can make examples of how easy it is to stream from anywhere, but realize the scope of the viewership Apple has to reach with their presentations. It's just not possible for them in that small venue.

And then you have conspiracy theorists like this guy who just take it to the next level, lol:

It's marketing

If they would do it every time it wouldn't be that special anymore. Look at the comments here: "AWESOME", "Thank you Apple". It is ridiculous.

This Keynote is going to mess with my mind.

The Mini is the perfect form factor but I couldn't put up with the non-retina screen - but then the 5 will have 64bit and the latest and greatest features. It's going to be so hard to choose.

What are the restrictions for watching? Only apple devices or just needs to be safari, so a windows computer with safari could watch? I forget :(

I turned on my Apple TV this morning to look at WSJ Live, and noticed my icons were out of place. I knew that meant they added the event before scrolling up. :D

The last one was safari only, however its Apple being asses that caused that - it was not a technical limitation.

If you view source you can quickly pickup the 720p feed URL, or at least you could for the last livestream.

Sorry for being ignorant, but how do I watch this live without an Apple TV?

Usually just before the keynote (like 12:50pm EST), Apple.com will have a link at the bottom of the page that you can only see/view with a Safari browser. Go to apple.com with your iphone/ipad right before the keynote, and hopefully this link will be there like in year's past.

Same here for the rMBP. I still have my late 2008 Macbook Pro. It's still going good apart from the battery that can't hold much charge anymore

You know you can replace the battery, right? That's a lot cheaper than a whole new laptop, and your 2008 machine will run Mavericks amazingly. I hope my 2007 MBP will run great on 10.9, too.

I don't have an apple TV, but I do have a MacBook and iPhone. Can't I use those to watch it?

I've never noticed it before, but Tim's got a 'keynote uniform' :p

Look at the screencaps of him here: http://www.apple.com/apple-events/ He's got the same black shirt on for all of them.

Kind of looks like he's gone for an upgrade on the Jobsian uniform.

I realized my GPS location was in my image, had to take a minute to remove it :) Couldn't remove the post so edited it quickly. Fixed it now (I hope :))

It's always on a Tuesday, when I'm on my way home from uni, when I am in the Underground so I won't be able to watch. Boo :(

I finish uni at the same time this starts too. I will be overground on the underground though :p but that'd use up a lot of data watching the live video stream so I'll just have to follow the twitter feeds :(.

I am so looking forward to this. The question is whether to wait for broadwell or be content with haswell for my rMBP.

Intel have announced major delays with Broadwell. Chip production likely won't start until March. It could be 2015 before you see it in a new model MBP.

You can always wait 12-18 months for a new chip whether it's Haswell/Broadwell/Skylake... but the right time to buy is when you need a new computer. That is, when your current computer no longer does what you need it to do.

I'm typing this on a 2008 17" MBP and it's still fine. If I didn't work with HD and 4K video on a daily basis, I'd probably keep this one for another 2-3 years. Keeping old hardware is better for the environment and your bank balance.
