So you're saying that they'll have 4 versions: 7, 7 Plus, SE, and Pro? That seems like it would really strain their supply chain and manufacturing.
The SE is already here.
The pro would be launched in April.
So yes they could do it.

1. Except for the 20th anniversary Mac I can't recall Apple ever paying more than lip service to anniversaries.

2. Apple will want to come out swinging next year? I think they want that every year?

3. Apple does the tick/tock because it's lowers the cost of production by limiting retooling of the factory. No they never made a guarantee they would do this forever, but if they want to maintain 30-40% margins then coming out w/ a new model every year or skipping an S year isn't feasible. The stock market isn't looking a year ahead, it wants big profit this and next quarter.

4. Rumors are not always right -- remember, I think it was the 4 rumors where the major case maker went ahead and made cases and oops it turned out the iPhone 4 looked nothing like the rumors. Also the distant rumors don't have near the % of accuracy as the ones closer to launch when case shells and other parts leak out. We are talking 18 months from now, and after the 7.

5. As I mentioned, and as noted in the article, a glass 5" or 6" iPhone would be heavy. Aluminum cases are great b/c strength + low weight. No one wants to carry around a brick, that era has passed. Apple can't make an iPhone heavier than the current 6s and 6s+ or they will alienate more customers than they attract.
Galaxy S7 edge is lighter than iPhone 6s Plus, so that point is moot.

I'm curious to see how apple will keep their colour options if they switch to glass body, also I hope they keep the rounded edges...

Except it's a bit SHADY that a analyst is suddenly and repeatedly spewing "info" about a full cycle ahead of the one that's not even out yet.

Does anyone need an Einstein to figure this is highly irregular in the sense he MUST know this can seriously damage Apple near term and it heavily favors their competitors and by default inflate Samesong's popularity. Very weird.

Clearly this guy is a MAJOR piece of sushi up Apples butt constantly attempting to pre-empt Apple at its own game.

I'm certainly surprised that the Apple blogs like MR and AI eat this guys dinner more and more and not see the negative in him. It's glaringly obvious to me this guy is not in Apples camp. He's now so widely reported that one can consider this info as insider trading of sorts as it will no doubt help facilitate yet another negative stock correction -- this on top of CNBC that will ---come tomorrow -- plaster the Japan Earthquake damage story as a huge negative for Apple and iPhone 7. Count on it.

Pile on people, pile on.

Suddenly the number 7 isn't so "lucky" after all.

Ugh
Stop being such a paranoid fanboy. He was right multiple times in the past (not a perfect track record, but still very good).
Lol at him being or not being in the Apple camp. His predictions will have no effect on Apple's stock if Apple delivers a great product this and next year. If the only thing Apple does for the 2016 iPhone is slightly better camera, removal of antenna lines (not all of them), removal of headphone jack and a minute spec bump (like with iPhone 6), then their stock deserves to go down. Simple as that.

Their stock goes up or down daily based on these rumors, not "hey guys lets hold off until the release to see if this guy is right". That's not how stock prices work.

I thought the same thing, and mentioned it to a friend. I was laughed out of the room. I don't care. It still many happen :)

I don't think Apple would be that "bold" to call it 6se but who knows? More likely would be ME (Medium Edition) and LE (Large Edition) if it's not called 7/7+.

If their reasoning is "aluminium will have lost the freshness" what makes them think going back to glass would solve that?

Hey, where do I sign up for the insanely thin glass model? Because nothing could go wrong there...
[doublepost=1460983438][/doublepost]Let's just skip glass and go straight to aerogel!

This is the stupidest thing I have ever read. Ever. You don't eat chocolate for a snack. You eat it for a treat.
  • If this is the stupidest thing you have read you should read more often
  • Dark chocolate is indeed a snack and considered good for your health if eaten in reasonable amounts
  • My comment was meant to be nothing more than silly but you're awesome for taking the time to reply, all comments welcome. :)

I call BS. 2017 would be same case with a speed bump, or iPhone 7s assuming the "new" iPhone 7 comes out this year.

It's also a terrible motivation for a design change from a company that claims to put product functionality first.

When I went from iPhone 4 to iPhone 5 it made me realise how much the 4 was weighing down my trouser pocket and what a delight it was to go to a bigger phone that was also significantly lighter than my old 4. It was actually one of those fairly rare "wow" product moments for me when I got my 5 and felt the weight. I worry how much a 7 might end up weighing if it goes back to a 4-like construction.

As far as I can see a glass back is just dead weight and another potential breakage point for no genuine added benefit as far as product functionality is concerned.

I always liked the design of the 4/s never had a problem with it either so I wouldn't mind seeing what they can do with a return to glass.

But then I suppose it could depend on the definition of glass, Liquid Metal is an "amorphous metallic glass" and they've been holding onto that licence for something other than sim tools.

Either way, it's a new toy :D

He's correct over 90% of the time (article is slightly dated now but Kuo's track record is impressive): http://www.cultofmac.com/273923/ming-chi-kuo/

That is not guessing.

Facts are nasty things, aren't they?

What about the 200+ times that person was wrong?
Do you realize how many things you report from that person? It's off the chart.
That he often repeats past rumors from other sources (that somehow magically become his!)
If you bat 20%, you're not usually called accurate.
Check the definition of accurate while your checking out what confirmation bias is.

It's not reporting what this slightly above average
PR expert / hack analyst that I object too. After all, rumor is your game.
It's the ridiculous characterization.

I know I posted this link just a few minutes ago but this is a more comprehensive reply.

Here are the facts about Kuo's accuracy.

He's not making hundreds of predictions and hoping some will stick. He's correct about 93% of the time (his accuracy hasn't gone down since that article was written): http://www.cultofmac.com/273923/ming-chi-kuo/

If we're being really tough on him, we could lower his accuracy to 86% but that's being overly strict (as in counting him wrong because his prediction about timing [but not product] was off).

I don't know him but if someone with that track record says something, I'm likely to believe him. If you don't believe what he says, you'll be wrong about 93% of the time. To doubt him is a misplaced skepticism.

Of course he's not the only source of rumors about upcoming Apple products but no one else is as prolific and accurate. To ignore him is to ignore a rumor with a high probability of being true. If MacRumors didn't cover his reports, they'd be a pretty poor rumor site.

So he has no real inside information he's just guessing. Why again do rumor sites treat this guy like is word is gold?

Jony Ive said the current iPhone display felt old to him. My guess is Apple is working on something radical but it's not ready yet. Seems silly to me to come up with a new design for one year just because it has to look new. And it surely doesn't make financial sense to have a brand new design that only lasts one year.

Agree Jony Ive feels old......
