And then people will come here and complain that Apple's product line is too complex with too many SKUs. I'm sorry but I don't want Apple morphing in to Samsung.

Apple's falling market against Samsung is an indication that Samsung is doing something right. No one is saying Apple should release 50 iPhone variations, but some variety would make sense.

One size no longer fits all (pun intended)

I actually think this is a better size. 5,5" would bring it too close to the ipad mini.

Not, just no it doesn't. I literally see people everyday day buying phones with screen sizes around the 5.5" range everyday.

When asked why they want a phone like that, the #1 reason is screen size. Plus they don't want to carry around TWO devices.

Now, it goes the other way as well where people buy the 4" iPhone because of size. Point being is 5.5" is no where close to iPad Mini size.

Get over your idea of everyone had to have the same size phone. People are different, people want choice, people will go where the choice is if they can't get it with Apple.

The 5 is already too tall, too thin and a little too light. The 4 had the best form factor so far (other than the blackberry that is)

Blackberry? If you liked that, Ryan Seacrest has a keyboard he wants to sell you.

Am I the only one here who wants a 2.5-3" iphone mini? I don't want a fat brick in my pocket all day long, just something big enough to browse the web in an emergency. Just a touch bigger than the current ipod nano would be perfect. If i'm going to watch something or use the web a bunch i'll grab my ipad mini...

Those are called flip phones. You can get them now.

I can't wait until all the "4 inch size is big enough" rapidly change their minds once they hold and try the larger phones. Just try using a larger screen smartphone for more than 5 minutes, and you'll see how much more comfortable it is to use for web browsing and email.

Personally, I love the 5" size screens and it's why I didn't bother with the 5 or 5S (sticking with the 4s another year). If Apple doesn't move up I will just to have to switch to a Nexus :( .

Yes, I have little doubt that this isn't really the planned product schedule. I definitely think Apple has seen unexpected problems during negotiations of rights holders for a new Apple TV / "iTV" at the very least. Tim Cook has been watering out these words and I think it's a mistake; what happened to just "We can't comment on unreleased products"? Underpromise and overdeliver!

As for the Cinema display, it would seem like even if Apple released a Thunderbolt 2 4K display today, that train would already have left the station, but I think they are refusing to update it with a 4K TN panel and waiting for IPS to get more affordable first. At least to me, Apple are synonymous with IPS. And at this point, I don't think there are any 4K IPS panel on the market for a reasonable price (similar to the price of a Cinema display). I think they want that to happen first, and when the profit margins are decent, things will start moving.

I really like this post.

BTW Apple has only ever released one form factor a year and only makes very small changes to that form factor. Reducing the height by 5 mm is the kind of thing you could expect. Going to up another 15 mm is a little more than I would expect but possible. But releasing two models at the same time seems very unlikely. (I consider the 5C to be only a variation of the 5)

My money is on the 4.7 inch model as I think Apple was never comfortable going up to the height of the 5S and absolutely doesn't want to make the phone even 1mm wider.

Look for a 4.7 inch in September.

To the people fretting about a larger iPhone......chill. Apple will find a way to fit the 4.7" screen on a footprint not much larger than the 5/5S. You will be able to use the new phone just fine with one hand. The bezels will shrink. Any 4" model will be the 6C or last year's model. I can use my Nexus 5 just fine with one hand. You'll be able to do the same with a 4.7" iPhone.

Sure, and I expect a larger model this year. So 4" and something around 4.7". I don't think Apple needs to do anything beyond that. If you need something larger than that get an iPad mini.

All you folks that are whining about the "too big" size can probably rest assured that Apple will still sell the 4" phone along with the bigger size, just maybe not as high spec'ed. Personally 4.7" seem kind of still to small once you have gotten used to a 5"+ screen. In any case, one size does not fit all either way. I think it's bets to leave the marketing decisions up to Apple. They seem to be doing just fine.

I still think 3.5" inch size is plenty big enough and I've been using larger phones for years including one that makes the Nexus 5 look tiny but personally still find it too small for regular web browsing and too big for one handed usage. But then again I found 7" tablets too small as well so the market doesn't really agree with me.

I'd guess the biggest cheer for this move will come from the Asian markets where there many who adore pocketable tablet size. Since the USA market is going to be saturated and the Asian market will be a bigger driver for growth, it's probably a good move business-wise. But I feel somewhat sad that the small 3.5"-4" iPhones are most likely done in terms of getting the best processor available.

I wish Apple could make a 4" flagship but that ship has probably sailed. I think the 4.7" display is a very reasonable size and great for practicality. Of course everything looks small compared to bigger objects. ;) A 5" screen looks tiny compared to my phone.

So far, most of the rumors center around the display size. I wonder what other features Apple will add/improve upon.

Oh nothing.

Seriously, I think the phone is mostly there and needs little improvement. Things don't really have to change dramatically every year. Apple always takes it really slow. I for one appreciate that.

Meanwhile, let the developers catch up. The A7 already has more horse power than anyone is using. Let's figure it out for a while before jumping on to the next one.

iPad mini is not a phone, and between 4.7 and 7.9 there are many mainstream phones and phablets, so we can't really generalize.

I think at this point it's all about iOS. Apple already started making steps to make it resolution independent. Developers will probably follow suit.

Tim is out of ideas...
And even then it's delayed.

Focus on iWatch and a bunch of other things. Skip this iPhone iteration if you can't come up with something more bright than 4,7" and 5,5" screen.

I think the 4" display already took the iPhone out of the "one handed use" category. Could just be me, but when I'm holding the phone comfortably having just typed out a text, it's a stretch to reach the top-left corner where the back button lives.

A 4.7" display will mean you can't reach every pixel with your thumb, but you can still scroll through web pages, books, emails, etc no problem, and you get the added benefit of a bigger screen.

new iPhone

Apple finally admits that they do not have the know-how nor the technology to make a 5.5 inch screen phone. Maybe they should spend the time hiring away from Samsung and HTC. Those two advanced companies can show Apple a thing or two.
