It’s not a silicone limitation, it is an Apple imposed restriction and additional storage.

Android tablets have had multi-user support for years and we all know Apple’s silicone was light years faster.
How else would they sell the iPad Pro 2019?

What do you think of Desktop Class Safari? Do desktop apps like Google Docs really works as intended?

I think this is the game changer as many web services just work better on desktop-class browsers, so much that you might not need their app anymore (for e.g. Google Docs on the web is much much better than its native iOS app)

If you can get by with a Chromebook, and Safari is close to 95% of what Chromebook can render then you are mostly set with the iPad if you are someone who always works from the browser.

Haven’t tried it yet... I’ll get to it soon!

How else would they sell the iPad Pro 2?

You mean iPad Pro 2019, technically for the 12.9” model this would be Gen 4 (2019), Gen 2 for 11” (2019) models.

I am sure with next years iPadOS we will see mouse support outside of the assistive section and multi-user login. If the home screen is a copy of what was available on Android years ago, it is only time.

*limited to only the latest iPad Pro

I think you are being very very patient.

My question would be why not support a mouse? If it just is an another pointing device, then it is just another pointing device. It lets you put the cursor where you want it and select items, and may scroll with a thumb wheel. Adding support for it would make some usages (cut and paste operation, etc) much easier on an iPad.

Well, it appears that Apple is now allowing mouse connection to iPad, so for the first time, people can do basic pointing, highlighting, picking, dragging and dropping with a mouse, without having to jailbreak their device. I agree many will find this useful.

However, I wonder if Apple has a more fully featured solution in mind. This would be a trackpad that does mouse like things plus other gestures specifically fitting iPadOS. Of course, it would be a proprietary device that would cost $100 or more. The other option is that they are working on a new Smart Keyboard Case with a trackpad. In either case, Apple could release this iPad optimized trackpad in the fall when iPadOS is released to the public.

In someways, Apple did this with the pencil. Before the Apple Pencil, there were numerous stylus and fine point pens on the market, so you could always markup documents, take notes, and make sketches on the iPad. The Apple Pencil just made the experience better. Maybe Apple is just giving in to the mouse thing and allowing it to connect, but not making a big deal about it until they have a something they can sell that is better.

The marquee feature for me is making Safari default to the desktop versions of sites, but USB/SD improvements run a close second.

Lots of good stuff in here; and I’m not even mad about the name change.

THANK YOU!!! About f***ing time! With these changes the iPad is one step closer to truly replace a computer.

Now hoping for mouse support and the possibility for apps to have access outside of their sandbox.
There is mouse support with Magic Trackpad.

I'm so glad I now have Comcast 250 mbps cable Internet. I KNOW that in upgrade mode, both iPad OS (for my 10.5" iPad Pro) and iOS 13.0 (for my iPhone X) are going to be nearly 2 GB downloads each....

you mean they are waiting for third party companies to sell trackpad or mouse for ipad before the jump the ship? most likely.

I just think Apple has found yet another reason to sell a proprietary high priced accessory. I am not knocking it.....just pointing out that it is a trend.

I could be wrong but I think the smart connector is proprietary. The Apple Pencil uses a proprietary chip. Now the iPad trackpad will be proprietary. I am not saying that you can’t use a third party keyboard, pencil, or mouse with an iPad. You can. Apple just offers special features with their proprietary accessories, and then charges an arm and a leg for them. Just think, to go along with your $800-$1,000 base iPad Pro:

  • $200 Smart Keyboard Case
  • $129 Apple Pencil 2
  • $100 iPad trackpad
That’s $430 up sell. Not bad.

Even more impressively, on your $500 iPad Air 3;

  • $159 Apple Smart Keyboard
  • $100 Apple Pencil
  • $100 iPad Trackpad
That’s a $350 up sell on $500 tablet. Good for Apple......again, I am not knocking it.

Seriously asking... HOW does this make this fulfill any more potential than it did before? How does any of this make you more productive or make it a "proper companion" than it is now? I'm just not seeing how this fundamentally changes the iPad and how you interact with it?

Don't get me wrong - cool updates, but I don't see me using the iPad any differently than I do today.
Just the safari update alone makes it way more capable as a MacBook replacement!
The only thing My girlfriend couldn’t do with an iPad for her job as a social media Manager was using the Facebook ad manager for example. This should resolve that.

Dumb question but I “need” to ask. Can we unload files FROM the iPad TO the HDD? Like could I unload all my photos from my iPad to the HDD or is it read only?
Why would it be read only!?

Still no calculator app?
You can do calculations from spotlight. If you have ASK folio you can command-space from any app. I only use it for very basic calculations though (+ - * /).

But I’ve never noticed it didn’t have a standalone calculator app until now. That is weird, i assumed it had one since it could do it via spotlight... now indeed that is so weird lol.

Anyway the update is good, external drives support was my #1 wish. I kinda hoped the home UI would more distinct though...

I could ask why about a lot of things Apple has done. They made a $999 stand... Do you happen to know the answer to my question? Thanks

Wondering whether the 9ms latency improvement applies for the first-gen pencil and older iPads like the 10.5 Pro. They don't really rule it out in their disclaimer on the iPadOS site, but they also don't explicitly state it would and I already had the impression the second gen pencil is much smoother on the iPad than the first gen.

  1. Testing conducted by Apple in May 2019 using iPad Pro (12.9-inch) (3rd generation) and Apple Pencil (2nd generation) with prerelease iPadOS, using Notes. Performance varies based on specific configuration, content, battery health, usage, and other factors.

There's certain irony in mac users complaining the iPad doesn't have proper mouse support because (as far as I can tell) they don't think a right click will do anything.

The whole it "emulates a finger" thing is stupid, fingers emulate a cursor (tapping is the same as left clicking). So by that logic a cursor emulates a cursor. If you mean right-click, you should just say it.

With mouse support, external drives and access to files on NAS, side-by-side documents, it's much closer what a computer is supposed to be.
[doublepost=1559596380][/doublepost]

Because it's a thousand times faster to make a precise selection with the mouse than with my finger. I just hope the mouse support is going to work with external displays. Look, one advantage of iOS is its unmatched security, compared to desktop system. However, it's very difficult to perform everyday tasks without a mouse, especially while working on an external monitor.

Also I get pain in my hand when extensively using a track pad or touch, but never with a mouse. You're moving your mouse with your arms or wrist. The fingers were not designed to be moved non-stop all day long.

I work with a computer for a living and been using a Mac with an external Trackpad for almost 10 years, never had a problem. It is about what you are used to.
