The iPad could have been a masterpiece if it ran Mac OS. It has 20 versions out there and still it's just a large iPhone. I use mine for flying and that's about it. Also run a pretty big YouTube review channel and not one time, ever, would I have even considered doing real music production or film editing on the iPad over my MacBook Pro. People say "well if you put macOS on iPad it'll run into Mac sales....so WHAT? IT GOES IN THE SAME POCKET, who cares, let it.
The iPad is, has been and always will be held back from any full potential as long as it runs a glorified iPhone OS. I don't even see a difference between just having a iPad Air vs a pro. Ah, yes, the camera ...which is still **** on both...
This argument has nothing to do with cannibalizing Mac sales. MacOS was never intended to be a touch based OS. If you felt that way, you should've bought a Windows tablet. We all know how that turned out.The iPad could have been a masterpiece if it ran Mac OS. It has 20 versions out there and still it's just a large iPhone. I use mine for flying and that's about it. Hopefully. I don’t know if you read the article on Apple Watches’s design. Ive wanted it to be a fashion item which people likes to wear.I think they had to push the glasses further down the line because they can’t make it work yet in a way that they are happy with. But I definitely think they are heading there. Cook is far more interested in AR than VR. They want the least isolating option, and that is certainly less isolating than a headset.
Or look at AirPods Max that hasn’t been updated in like 4 years. I’d guess something in the 3-4 year rangeBetter question what is a generation when taking AVP? For iPhone it’s annually and for iPad it’s 1-2 years.
I had this same thought when people were showing how “cool” it was to put timers over stuff they’re cooking. I’m like how is that easier than just setting a timer on my iPhone called pasta? Another called sauce. And in that case, I have to be looking AT that specific area to see the timer. A timer on my phone I can see anywhereHow is placing apps all over the place any quicker than wipping your phone out and looking up the same info in 2 seconds?
O wow i can walk to the fridge and look at a shopping list. How about just open the notes app on your phone?
The reason is that if you put kind of convenient or necessary elements in both platforms respectively so that they cannot replace one another, you can charge your customer twice.
I highly, highly doubt that macOS will ever see the light of day on iPad. I actually sincerely doubt that 2024 Apple even has the programming chops to successfully implement a touch interface into macOS without breaking it irrecoverably. I suspect the most we can expect from the upcoming iPad Pro is "It's the best disploooy we've ever built into iPad and we think you're gonna love it." Moving forward I think Apple will be locking as much software down as possible, not adding more freedom.
The Current Screens on the M1 MacBook Pro hurt my eyes. Too much radiation. Even the Kardis Mobile does not want to work on the same desk. I have to turn away to stop the interference.Am i the only 1 that thinks its a really bad idea having led screens that close to your eyes?
I don’t think these products will ever truly go mainstream or be good for long term use
John Gruber once said, it's the heaviness of the Mac that allows the iPad to be light (paraphrasing). The iPad (and iPhone) have replaced the Mac as the "computer for the rest of us" in Apple's lineup. There might be no point for you, but there is for the millions of us who buy them. The iPad has the guts of an iPad, the fact that it shares its chipset with the Mac is just another factor. An iPad does different things compared to a Mac. In my opinion, it’s worse when it comes to heavy workflows (like video editing and similar), but it’s much much better for web browsing, reading, creative work, etc. For me, and many others, the argument “You can buy a MBA for the price of an iPad Pro” works the other way around: no matter how cheap a MBA is, I won’t get it instead of an iPad Pro.
True enough. I hate this as wellBut they've turned Windows into adware. I administrate Windows systems and I have to keep a list of what I'm trying to do open next to me, because every single time I touch anything there are a million things popping up at me trying to get my attention or trick me into letting Microsoft do something else to get more data.
Vision Pro will run into the same ”problem” as the iPad…it doesn’t run macOS or work like a Mac. It will be declared a toy even though, like the iPad, you can get a lot of work done with it if you aren’t stuck in your old ways.
This is exactly why I will never ever purchase or use one. I spend enough time staring at glowing rectangles. The idea of strapping them directly to my face has zero appeal to me. No matter how "cool" it may be, Actual Reality >> Augmented Reality.Am i the only 1 that thinks its a really bad idea having led screens that close to your eyes?

And now he designed the humane ai pin, which on the idea itself, is another fashion item people can wear everyday.
A light weight glass is something on the same line. I have to guess him leaving means there is a strong internal opposition to that direction. A lead will not leave a company if he can still project his influence
These are logical deductions
Thank you! I feel like I’m taking crazy pills with how silly this thing is.Worth remembering that 3DTV failed in part because people didn't want to wear a pair of featherweight glasses. Expecting this diving bell cyborg helmet to succeed on a large commercial scale is like expecting 3DTV to succeed when you need to wear the TV on your face.
Mac and MacOS ain’t going no where. It is THE dev machine. Apple vision won’t replace that. It’s a replacement for phones and monitors.Yes but Vision OS proves that Apple doesn't care about that anymore. Neither macOS nor anything like it will ever run on new hardware from an existing company ever again.
What is far, FAR more important to Apple than usability, is control of the platform. iPadOS is locked down in a way the Mac can't be, and that is what Apple wants. To the point of limiting the usability of VisionOS just to keep it locked down.
The day of general purpose, programmable, open operating systems is dead. They have come as far as they are going. There's Linux and BSD and that family, and that's it.
It makes me really sad to say that but until there is a company with incredibly deep pockets that cares more about software freedom than money, it's over. Google was that, for a while. Then Larry and Sergei made more money than god and moved to Singapore and stopped caring about the affairs of mortal men. Apple too, for a while, in a way. And we know what happened there.![]()
Gurman's take is that the Vision Pro could eventually replace the iPad.
For me, it's not necessarily that it's not running macOS. I don't mind the iOS-style interface at all. It's that it can't run programs that I need, as I can on my Mac. For example, R and RStudio. There's an RStudio cloud option, but it's not what I'm looking for - I'm often in areas with little reception so cloud services don't work well for me.The iPad could have been a masterpiece if it ran Mac OS. I mean this isn’t even debatable. The VP, an accessory product, is more expensive than the devices it is an accessory to by a wide margin. I can’t even think of something more niche than this in the tech world.Seriously dude.... NO it won't. And not for $3500 currently.
The Vision Pro will never be a mainstream device, at least not in the next decade+. It just won't be. People don't want to put stuff on their head, just like no one wants to sit down and put on 3D glasses to watch a movie at home. We've been through this before. The coolness factor of this will wear off after a few months of use, and it will just sit on shelves.
In fact, people get contact lenses JUST so they don't even have to wear glasses!
And as as far as other comments, I agree:
- Windows 11 has turned to crap, which is a huge opportunity for Apple.
- The iPad is still crippled after all these years. Ans it's a M1 device! Missed opportunity by Apple, and it's no wonder the sales have gone down for it.
And I'm not saying Vision is dead... it's just a niche product. MORE niche than the Watch, iPad, and Mac. Apple has a looooong way to go to make it mainstream, if ever.
By the time we add in all the physical accessories like keyboards and mice needed to make an iPad or, even more so, the VP, suitable Mac replacements, we might as well just use a Mac. I don’t see how the VP is useful as anything other than a simulated large-screen monitor for another device to use as screen real estate. If I need to use a physical keyboard and mouse and carry those around on top of a huge headset and multiple battery packs to keep the thing running, in addition to carrying a Mac around that can run actual desktop apps to use with the VP, how does this VP even justify its existence? It is a cool tech demo with little practical use. A Mac or an iPhone does everything people need tech to do better than this does. For me, it's not necessarily that it's not running macOS. I don't mind the iOS-style interface at all. It's that it can't run programs that I need, as I can on my Mac. For example, R and RStudio. There are a bunch of other programs that are only available on Mac. If the iPad did run macOS, then I'd have a lot more options and it would be more of a replacement for me. Instead, these are simply not allowed on the iPad. Lift that restriction and I'm far more interested in the iPad as a Mac replacement. That said, I'd probably stick to Mac, at least for a while.
Right now, I use iPad more for my hobbies. Editing photos on it is mostly very good, and I really enjoy being able to directly touch them for edits. Not sure I'd want to edit video, at least, not just with a touch interface.
Appreciate you sharing that with me… but dang does that look like something you want on your eye? There are working prototypes for contact lenses out there but I'm guessing anything for consumers are 20 years away. https://www.roadtovr.com/mojo-vision-smart-contact-lens-ar-hands-on/
