Apple plans to announce new Apple Watch models this fall with improved health tracking and GPS chips, according to a new Bloomberg report that confirms previous rumors we've heard about the Apple Watch 2.

The upcoming Apple Watch 2 will not, however, feature cellular connectivity to make it less dependent on the iPhone, as Apple has not been able to compensate for the extra battery life that a cellular connection consumes.

Apple is researching low-power cellular chips for future versions of the Apple Watch, but has been unable to make it work for 2016. The company's "ultimate goal" for the Apple Watch is to decouple it from the iPhone, but technology will need to improve before it is able to do so. LTE connectivity and significant Apple Watch design changes are not expected before 2017.

The addition of a GPS chip, something planned for the next-generation Apple Watch, will allow the device to more accurately determine a user's location for better fitness and health tracking capabilities along with improved navigation. Previous reports have also suggested the Apple Watch 2 will include a barometer, a higher capacity battery, and improved waterproofing techniques.

Bloomberg's report does not give a specific launch date for the next-generation Apple Watch beyond "fall," but it is possible Apple plans to launch new Apple Watch models alongside the iPhone 7, which is expected to be unveiled at an event that will take place on September 7.

A previous rumor from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has suggested we will see both a second-generation Apple Watch with the aforementioned new features and an upgraded first-generation Apple Watch with an improved processor and superior waterproofing.

All Apple need to do now it design a decent strap for sporting people to compensate for the watch be so big and heavy and uncomfortable to wear.

Have you tried the aluminium (Sport) model with the Sport band? I've heard the band is quite good but have never tried it.

I'm going to wait until it can transport me to work. Traffic is terrible here. Then I will buy one.
Love to see all these stupid posts on here on the watch. I do have one and will not be without it as is. And when more features come I will move to the next ones. As for cellular to work alone? Really? We all have been taking our phones with us for 15 years and NOW we need to leave it home. Ok.

My body is ready. Seriously, I need to workout more and I'm def going to buy one of these if GPS is included :D
I knew someone beat me to it. Was going to say, my wrist is ready.

As well as my EXISTING STRAPS. Don't mess with me on that Apple. And GPS THANK GOD ALMIGHTY I hope this is true!

I suppose the GPS will hand-off the initial location and satellites from the phone, since there's no way the watch could fake a GPS lock for a bit. Itd be like like super a-gps.

Will the price got back up 50 or will the current AW drop 50 and the AW2 start @299?

Question for Apple Watch current stainless steel owners...Do you find the watch rather heavy to use for running?

I may try Watch 2 but only if it has GPS and if the price is lowered. Unfortunately here in Canada, the stainless steel version is still $700 CDN.

Are you kidding? There's room for the whole camera and lens assembly. Forethought.

You're delusional because you apparently don't understand hardware. And how convenient that you're ignoring the post where the guy/gal SHOWS the actual camera modules.

And please don't just say "i'm forwarding thinking, don't put walls up." I could say plenty of things that will happen in the future at some point or another. Deal with the reality of size restrictions rather than wishful thinking.

Will it happen, probably. When? I don't know but I know not this year or probably next. There's more important things than a camera to add.

Camera is essential!
Not buying until has camera and can operate independent of my phone.
For capturing all sorts of photos on the go when you're without your phone.

Just... no. I would like it to give wind speed and direction for when I go shooting. That would be useful. But a camera? That's just silly.

If the new model is compatible with existing straps, then I'll buy a new strap, because for me a new strap will trump anything else that'a new, Watch-related, at this time. Spring time, I might get the refreshed gen1 model, if the rumours are true concerning it being sightly thinner than the existing.

GPS? ... meh. I can see the value for those that do things that could benefit from it, but for me it's quite far down on the list of things I'd like in the next model.

I really hope they'll add constant heard rate monitoring to allow for better fitness tracker. My old fitbit HR could do this, and it was still able to operate for a week on a single charge. I really don't see how Apple's version is so power hungry. D.C Rainmakers review of the Watches fitness tracking was quite devastating, they really need to catch up.

They thought it through and the answer is they can't. AT&T's EDGE network is shutting down end of this year. T-Mobile is doing a partial shutdown to only support M2M, and it will go by 2020. Verizon 1x is going by 2019. None are actively signing up new devices to 2G.

The answer is that there's a special low-power low-cost LTE variant called LTE-M specifically designed for IoT devices. 1 Mbps max, modem cost of $5, designed for crappy small antennas, will run for months on batteries, works with existing LTE infrastructure. This is why LTE is highly likely if they are doing any sort of WWAN connectivity. People generally know what they're doing.

Thanks for this update. I have an elderly relative using an original iPhone on T-Mobile for emergency situations only. When 2G goes, so will his lifeline.

They should ignore the person's post with those camera modules ... they were for the 12MP rear facing camera on the current 6s Plus with image stabilization! That's not how big a front facing FaceTime camera would be. There's more than enough room to engineer a camera if that's what they want, and while your opinion is yours about what they should add to the watch, there's a whole market of people adding a camera to the watch might open it up to, something even more important to Apple than what you personally may think is valuable. Add to that Apple has already demonstrated their commitment to the selfie taking market.

How has samsung solved the battery life issue and Apple hasn't? Does the Samsung Watch LTE version have good battery or similar to the current apple watch?
