If you tap the route does it become bigger to show more details? Also, has any new Achievement been added?

A thumbnail of your route appears in the activity app on the iphone. Tapping on it dims it briefly, but nothing happens, suggesting it will zoom in in a future beta perhaps.

I'm pleased to announce that if you start an outdoor run and outdoor walk, the Watch, together with the iPhone maps your route that you took! You can see this route after you save the workout and view it on the Apple Watch app on your iPhone. I wanted this feature for so long! The route seems to be color coded too with red/yellowish regions on your route, kinda like traffic zones, but I'm not sure what those colors mean.

It does NOT need your iPhone BTW, it is currently unknown how they are doing this. My self and a few other users have noticed. I run several miles a week without my iPhone and just the watch, it still accomplishes a map. The guess is if it is linked to your phone or wifi when you start running then it knows your location to start, after that it's just a lot of vector information parsing and map comparisons to figure out the route.

Surely not?? How accurate can that be? I mean if i left my house and ran 3km (round trip) tracking south, and did the same again tracking north how would it know which way i went? Particularly if you turn around on each example and ran home the same way

Where exactly do I turn on the Mickey voice?
Just make sure your Watch isn't muted: In Control Center (swipe up when in a watch face) -> make sure the bell icon isn't red. Then just tap Mickie/Minnie. Do notice that it takes about 5 seconds for the Mickey/Minnie face to fully load after you switch to it.

strange my screen didnt turn off automatically since today.
the days before it worked fine.
turning on off the watch did not help. any ideas?

update: re-pairing did solve the issue

Doesn't work on mine strange

Couple of questions:

On the Watch in wOS 3 beta, in messaging, i don't get contact names, I only get the phone number/email address. It this the same for others?
In the watch app on my iPhone, should editing the order of "My Faces" also alter the order on the watch? For me it doesn't.

Can someone please confirm that this will also work on outdoor cycle? (map your route)

Also, I know this is a funny question, but does the Mickey voice tell you the exact time? 3:17 PM for example and not just 3:15 PM or 3:20 PM if you know what I mean, LOL! (Not just big instalments of time, lol)

Literally just got in from a ride about 15 minutes ago and I can confirm that it does work! This is pretty great. Like others have said, tapping on the route seems to dim the screen like it wants to open a larger map but it currently does nothing. I will say that I took an outdoor ride just a few days ago (after already updating to the beta) and for some reason it didn't display the map or temperature once I was done so mileage may vary during the beta of course.

Really love this feature and hopefully it'll allow you to view a larger map with some details of your route later on. I know other apps like Strava can do this but I love that it's being built into the watch now. Now we just need a new watch with built-in GPS, eh?

Oh, one other note: I noticed about two-thirds through my ride that my watch had disconnected from my phone for some reason and things like distance and pace were displaying "--". I stopped and got the phone out, tried reconnecting and it failed a couple times. After putting the watch into Airplane Mode and switching bluetooth on an off on my phone, it reconnected and seemed to fill in the gap because my watch then updated the distance to be (from what I can tell) correct. Not sure what caused the disconnect but I'm glad it was able to keep tracking properly despite it.

Honestly I don't know how they're doing this but it's very accurate for me so far. I run around my city in random routes and it figures it out. It's a lot of vector calculus and stats if they're doing what I think they're doing with the algorithm. If anyone would like to test it trail running without an iPhone that might be telling. My guess is that it wouldn't work with no map of the streets.

Any improvements in the syncing of an Apple Music playlist to the watch?
No! Just tried it... finally gave up until the next time I charge... after 20 minutes it was at 5% to sync about 50 songs top. Hopefully it works at just had a bug for showing the sync process.

Thanks! Btw, do you notice any new Achievement medal except for these and 365, 500 and 1000?

What gets to me is when Apple adds new features when features from over a year ago are still not working properly.

Question for wOS 3 users: is there still a way to control music playing on your phone?

I use the Now Playing glance to control Spotify all the time - hope it's been moved to the new Control Centre rather than having been removed completely.

Uh uh...you don't get off that easily: please specify which features you believe are not working.

I suspect the magic is a combination of the accelerometer plus fairly complex algorithms for filtering out arm motion during the run. Add to that a known start and end position and maps with accurate roadways depicted and it should be able to make some pretty accurate guesses as to where you were (much like a vehicle nav system is still able to follow your route even if GPS is unavailable). A good test will be from users who run cross country as opposed to on well mapped roads.

Now Playing is still available. It's in the Dock now instead of being a glance. If I'm not mistaken, this is the only place it's available, it isn't a standalone app but it doesn't really need to be. Mine does seem to be bugged though, currently it doesn't seem to show what I'm listening to. I'm sure that will get fixed.

That sounds great - thanks. Was just worried it was going to be Music app only, and we'd lose control of media in third party apps. Glad that's not the case!
