The public toilet comment was spot on but we don't need Jony Ive back. That guy overstayed his usefulness by many years. Example: Mac Pro that was ironically shaped like a trashcan.
Its not a matter of overstaying his welcome. You can't say that about the guy whose designs literally defined Apple for the past 25 years. There is old world Apple and new world Apple and Jony along with the rest of the design studio brought brilliant products to market since 1998. What happened in the past 5 years though is I think he felt lost. Jobs wasn't there to balance things out and say the necessary no's. But he really made some critical decisions in the past 10 years.

Looking back on iOS and OS X, getting rid of Scott Forstalls skeuomorphic design taste was necessary - the guy was turning both operating systems into gimmicks. iOS 7 wasn't perfect out the gate, but it set it on the right path and everyone followed. Apple Watch, AirPods, 2012 to 2015 MacBook Pro's, all the iPads, the 2019 MacPro, even as recent as the 2021 iMacs Jony was consulted for them. Lets not forget, every iPhone up to the iPhone 14 is based on Jony's consultation.

Sure, a trash can Mac Pro wasn't the greatest idea, but the merits of it wasn't totally off. The idea was the GPU was taking more control of what a CPU was doing. The problem is, they didn't step back remember to ask, is this something users will want or solution in search of a problem, aka, Touch Bar. But for all his faults, he is essential to Apple's success, so don't write him off like he is disposable and didn't contribute to the success of the company.

We don't even know what will become of Apple in the next 10 years. Thats when you can say, Apple is safe.

It is the same story as always. If Apple doesn't change the design, the usual suspects will post about how it is the same exact device.

If they do change the design, those same people will always say it is ugly or terrible. And nobody can know how this looks based off a CAD render which are notoriously ugly since it is just shapes without the materials or colors involved.

It doesn’t looked more durable though. I’m not yet convinced.
I think the beveled glass is what the issue is in terms of durability. Smack the corner just right and you have spiderwebs. Simply making the front completely flat is a leap in the right direction even if they changed nothing else. TBH I am not sure why they haven't just done this day one. Aesthetic? 🤷‍♂️

No ****ing way this is real. Whoever did this has never seen an Apple product before.
Said every MacRumors member when the iPhone 4 started leaking. “SO Un-Apple.” “Look at those round metal volume buttons, no way!” “Anyone who thinks this is real has never owned an Apple product.” I could go on.

This isn’t even a photo of the watch. Let’s see what it actually looks like before queuing the works.

New CAD images of the upcoming Apple Watch "Pro" have been shared online by 91mobiles, providing a closer look at the alleged design of the device.

The renders line up with Apple Watch "Pro" case images shared earlier this morning, revealing the inclusion of a new physical button on the left side of the watch. The new button is visible within the CAD images, which show it sitting beneath three holes likely to be the speaker vents.

As for the Digital Crown, the CADs reveal a much more rugged look for the dial compared to the current version. Both the Digital Crown and Side Button appear to be housed within a new chassis protrusion on the side of the Apple Watch Pro, which could make them more easily accessible. The display on the watch is completely flat, unlike the Apple Watch Series 7, which features curved edges around the display.

In his Power On newsletter this weekend, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said that the Apple Watch "Pro" will feature a significantly larger display that will likely "be bigger than most wrists." Past rumors have suggested a case size between 47mm and 48mm for the device. Apple plans to use the larger display to display additional metrics to athletes during workouts, and there will also be redesigned watch faces, according to Gurman.

The new Pro model will sit at the top of the Apple Watch lineup, with pricing expected to fall in the $900 to $1,000 range. Apple is expected to announce the all-new Apple Watch "Pro" during an event on Wednesday, September 7. The new high-end Apple Watch will join the new Apple Watch Series 8 and an updated Apple Watch SE in the lineup.

I understand that it’s hard for people who don’t work on designs to understand and feel cad models. As a professional designer with experience working with cad models, I think this looks very promising! I’m guessing there will be a signal color on the extra button.

A lot of this is psychology. People tend to go for the middle way. If there were just two options, series 8 and SE, people might lean towards the SE. If, however, there are a Pro, S8 and SE, more people will buy the 8 because they tell themselves that they have done the rational thing of not buying the most expensive option.
Right, That’s a great lesson of marketing

Call me when they reduce the thickness by half. Otherwise, not interested in wearing that monstrosity on my wrist.

What kind of additional features will it have compelling a person to spend hundreds of dollars more on the pro model? I have banged my AW5 on many a door knob & wall. Never a hint of a scratch.

If someone wants durability there is the stainless steel with sapphire. I smash my watch on so many things and never once has it cracked or even scratched. Need for a rugged watch is non existent. The people balking at a $999 price are clearly the ones that were purchasing the aluminum model, as the higher quality Apple Watches have been $800+ for a while now, despite that being news to so many on here.

They'll probably tell us during the announcement on Wednesday.

I've been looking for a larger display for a long time, simply because that is the trend with watches these days and I like a chunky watch.

I'm hoping the rumours are true on display size - at least for the pro model.

I hope they offer an AR version of the watch on the store so you can "try it on" virtually. I just want to see what it looks like on my wrist.

It seems very unlike Apple to take an existing design and just stick crap onto the side of it. Have to wait until we see it for real but… I have concerns.

Fairly sure Steve Jobs would turn in his grave over this design. It’s fugly. i doubt this is real.

It's a weird lumpy design... it looks like they needed to keep the old rounded body shape for compatibility with existing straps, but also wanted a flat face and extra side surface for a button so grafted those on...

FWIW, the trend of chunky watches ended nearly a decade ago. Mechanical watches have been downsizing quite a bit, with 36-42mm mechanicals becoming the norm again.

is that weird thing on the right supposed to protect the Digital Crown?
Yes it’s for when you’re engaged in some or other extreme sporting activity and you accidently hit what would otherwise be the exposed and vulnerable edge of that portion of the circumference of the digital crown against a glacier/carabiner/surfboard or something like that. If you’re wearing this rugged watch the item will harmlessly bounce off without leaving a scratch.

The less that syrupy, maudlin words like "beautiful" and "magical" and "amazing" are used to describe its products, the more mature and reasonable a company like Apple becomes and the more interested I become in staying on the upgrade train. I'm tired of spending Apple level prices for products seemingly designed exclusively to prop up some hollow, feel-good marketing ideal. The re-focus on practical, reasonable, intelligent function as a hallmark is so heartening. Keep going, Apple.
