You win most absurd internet comment today. Apple's "ugly decisions" continue to keep Apple the most successful tech creator ever - - by a lot.

hmmm I don’t think people buy Apple products for their looks mainly these days. iPhone 4 however was and still is the best looking phone ever released.

I still don't get it. Why would an athlete be more interested in something so big on his wrist? Why would athletes have such big wrists in the first place? Why would athletes, who are more likely to take a fall, buy something that costs 1000 Dollars? It is more rugged, yes, but fall on your hands with your MTB and the thing will be in pieces.
Answer:
As an athlete one focuses on the athletic activity, but still wants ancillary info reliably available without really thinking about it or worrying about the security of the device(s) providing said info.

Big so data can be readily viewed during aggressive activity in all weather conditions and without reading glasses. Fall tolerant so one need not restrict one's activity due to worry about damaging some pricey tech device.

P.S. Athletes quickly learn not to fall on your hands like couch potatoes tend to do. Instead they tuck and roll, because many athletes fall a lot, and broken wrists and the like suck.

I lived with my Seiko automatic for more than 15 years before switching to an Apple Watch 5, primarily for health tracking, and because it was an easy add-on to my all-Apple device life (and work). It was a tremendous help in following my improvements in health, but that also made me want more out of a wrist-worn device, including getting back to something that better fit me visually.

I won’t be buying the Watch Pro as I’m completely happy with my Garmin Epix and its masculine form, toughness including 300’ water resistance, titanium cover and sapphire lens, as well as its 16 day battery life and great OLED screen. Not having cellular connectivity is the only negative and I’m ok with giving that up for all the other things it does offer.
I had a similar 20-year Seiko history and switching to AW. But I will buy the AW Pro instead of an Epix because the safety and convenience of cellular connectivity over-rides any other alleged benefits of an Epix.

Ooo, spot the people whom I offended....big watches, small wrists by any chance 🤣

Call me when they reduce the thickness by half. Otherwise, not interested in wearing that monstrosity on my wrist.
Those of us who wore Seiko dive watches, etc. on our wrists (and of course the Rolex crowd too) never considered it to be a monstrosity.

Hopefully that does not backfire for Apple:

Quite some customers (myself included) are waiting for the new „Pro“ Watch due to bigger screen and/or better battery. If the real thing looks bad, a „normal“ Series 8 may already provide at least more screen real estate over Series 6 and earlier - for a lower admission fee than the Pro.

And if the „normal“ Series 8 is indeed close to being indistinguishable from Series 7 (even same CPU and only the body temp sensor and satellite emergency as new functionalities, according to rumors so far), the current discounts on S7 may suddenly look quite enticing.

I’m really curious if there may be unexpected news to S8, as every leaker is focusing on the Pro, so Apple could fly under the radar with S8 “Standard” …

… because dive computers were way bigger still, making the Seiko’s look small in comparison. scnr ;-)

The thing is, the vast majority of people don't have massive wrists. Although having said that, I have seen plenty of people who wear expensive watches and it looks so ridiculous on their wrists it's embarrassing. A watch should fit a wrist depending on size and the reason they are made in different sizes.

A massive watch on a small wrist - No no
A small watch on a massive wrist - No no
A correct size watch for the size of your wrist - Yes yes...classic.

Same goes for the watch strap. Make sure it's wide/narrow enough for the wrist in question.
Clearly I am the antithesis of a fashion person, but it seems to me that a lot of folks who are often consider that wrist/watch size inequality to be part of the desired "look."

Agree with all of this. I don’t relish the thought of a massive watch on my 7 inch wrist. However, look at the popularity of the Casio G-Shock line, etc. It is part of the fashion lexicon.

For me, if the functionality is there, it’s worth wearing somethjng that makes me look like I’m a little kid wearing my father’s watch ;-)

Personally, I'd like a longer battery life for very long activities. But I realize that not very many people are looking for that and that my needs are better met by a more specialized watch from Garmin, etc. Still, it'd be nice.
I’m curious what you consider “very long”. The Apple Watch could accommodate a 9 hour activity. I realize there is a minority of people running longer than 9 hours but there is an incredible amount of disinformation when it comes to battery life claiming it will not make it through a day without any activities or that it’s only good for a 10k. They clearly don’t actually own one.

If you say so. The only reason you'd be offended by my comment is to justify your own opinion....fair enough.
Just stating that if you went to any high end watch maker they'd tell you the same thing....each to their own though I suppose.

Some people actually wear a watch, especially a smart watch, for the functionality, not the fashion. I would have no problem wearing a bigger watch on my small wrists if it did more of what I want. Even if it was ugly.

I‘m not a fan of the design or the forecasted price. I hope it is sleeker in person. In 5+ years we will have an Apple Glove to accomodate the ever increasing watch screen size.

You're probably right actually when it comes to smart watches.....fair point.

Very unlikely chance of that ever happening. Apple will build up a subscription service of their own long before they start playing seemlessly (and this being direct competitors) with the same programs that serious users use.

Don't worry though, you have Nike Run integration, isn't that enough?
Obviously Apple isn’t going to sync with every platform out there. Neither does Garmin. Garmin provides APIs for people like TrainingPeaks to use just like Apple provides APIs for the same thing. It’s called HealthKit and there are several apps that will link HealthKit to TrainingPeaks.

After that big bulbous thing they put out last year I didn't think they could make it look worse but it looks like they've managed it!
