just got it and the screen isn't any bigger at all from series 7 I have measured exactly, that's disappointed I wanted a bigger screen, the bezel and case is bigger but the screen doesn't look any bigger
Apple specs always showed that the display area is only 1.5% bigger.

The 49mm is only the case size and like you said the difference is taken up by the bezels.

Packaging is really nice for the Ultra and the Alpine loop is fine, not fiddly at all, but I can see why the Trail one will be much easier to adjust on the go.

Now time to call EE to transfer the eSim which never seems to go smoothly for me...

I can't even get the Alpine Loop to attach to the watch, feels like I'm really going to have to force the top lug to go in which can't be right...

Edited... Sorted.

Which do you prefer, the Alpine loop or Ocean? From what I understand the Alpine loops are a little fiddly?

My DPD driver is nearly here and I don't know wether just to take it straight to Apple to exchange for an Ocean, given I can also get that, y'know, wet.

I love the Titanium finish and the Alpine Loop looks great, too. However, I wish I had the Black Trail Loop. Some first impressions:

- The Alpine Loop feels comfortable but it's a bit off a hassle to put it on. Not as intuitive as the sport loop.
- It's big, but not as big as expected and I don't have the thickest wrists.
- Screen seems to collect dust more easily than on a Series 7, but maybe it's just me.
- So far the biggest "problem" I have with the Ultra is that the crown is a little too hard to press than I would like.
- I only lost 1% battery life since I set it up. That was two hours ago. We're off to a good start :)
- PLUS I think I actually have an Alpine Green couch as well :D

You already knew that though
I know but I didn’t think in person it would look odd, I don’t like the fact the bezel and case are so big it makes the screen look even smaller, I’m returning it and sticking with series 7 it’s very dissatisfying, they could of made the screen bigger they even said the biggest screen ever in a watch and it’s so small you can’t notice it

So, my only question to Ultra owners is whether there is any real estate gained on the watch face over the Series 7/8?

I keep reading the Ultra screen is no bigger than the 7/8. On the other hand, I read reviews that say that texting and even using the calculator is much easier to use on the Ultra? Did Apple perhaps just do some tweaking on the pixels?

Just picked up a set which I will return it eventually. The demand isn’t that great in my country it seems. The stocks are pretty healthy, for a new class of product.

I’m more excited to try the new bands instead. I have an Ocean Band at home and I got the watch with the Alpine loop.

The bezel, in terms of any electronic display (TVs, monitors, phones, watches, etc), has always been the empty black space between the screen pixels and the frame. What you’re actually calling the bezel should be called the frame or case edges.

I’m also in the camp that thinks they’ll reduce the bezel eventually, basically every device with bezels goes in that direction. And considering how big they are on the Ultra, Apple definitely has the capability to do it without increasing the frame size. My guess is they didn’t for this release to leave it as an “upgrade” for next release, or maybe they just ran out of time to reduce them considering how much that would effect (battery, UI, etc).
Exactly.

a problem with the new ultra even tho it says it has a slightly bigger screen the text on messages for the contact doesn't show the whole name while on the series 7 it does, both are set to smallest text size but for some reason the ultra cant show the know name so its actually a down size, this watch is going back, the only thing I like is the brighter display which they should of given the series 8

That’s the main reason I waited. I am on a Series 7 45mm and once i realized the screens were going to be the same size I decided to wait a year or two when you know they will make the screen bigger. I‘ve been wanting a bigger Apple Watch for years for both size and screen and it seems they got the physical size bigger this year. Have to wait a year or two for a bigger screen.

The screen is bigger, but by the tiniest of margins. Possibly not even really noticeable.

The bigger take away I noticed with reviews is that the screen / glass being flat creates the perception of it feeling bigger. I haven't seen one myself, but in photos I do like how there's much less reflection happening since the glass is not curved.

I'm sure they have a roadmap for this new Ultra design. I'd love to see the screen grow in size with the bezels shrinking. Seems they can do it without changing the case size.
