But... but... as there are only nine bent iPhones in existence, why would they need this sort of roll-out?

My wife has an iphone, so do I but it collects dust. I use an S5 active and love it. I have to put a screen protector on her phone every few months as she tears that screen up. Its full of scratches. She has a pocket in her purse just for the phone and she always swears she doesn't know how the scratches got there. You know what it was from? Sand. Little bits of sand from the beach. It just blows in. Sounds crazy but guess what? Sand scratches glass. I don't doubt that phone bent in her purse. Just watch your wife, she will drop that purse on the ground, throw it in the car seat next to her, whatever. If the phone can't take that abuse then it is designed defective plain and simple.

Maybe she had a bowling ball in her purse.

Here is what think is going on. There is a natural bow to the phone. The bow is caused by the attached screen, and offers some rigidness.

I placed my phone down on the table, face down, and hit the sleep/wake button. Light does leak out from between the table and the phone. I press on the back of the phone and it flexes flat to the table. I release the phone and it leaks light. Much like the OP photo, all though his has a bit more. This bow is towards the screen, opposite to the "bend gate" photos.

This to me does not indicate a flaw or user error, but represents finite tolerances in manufacturing.

I am not saying my phone is bent or I bent it, because it was in my pocket. I am saying that it might be this way naturally, and is a product of manufacturing. Much like distressed clothes having variation. Thin phones have natural curves.

Open a new deck of cards, I bet many times, they aren't flat but slightly curved towards the face.

As the phone gets warm, it will tend to curve towards the cooler side, being the screen also the dissimilarities of the build materials would cause one side to expand more than another and also produce a natural curve.

When the phone is in it's case, (as I do this for it's protection), there is no noticeable curve at all, and no light leakage.

The phone is functionally fine, and I can't see how Apple would want to replace this. The problem is "Mass Hysteria." People are now looking for things, as they do every year, and then realizing they have it too, so it must be bad or a defect.

I think Apple should invest in a phone straightener for the Genius Bar. You come in, they put the thing into traction, and apply force to the side that brings it strait. Hand it back to the customer, all done.

I took three photos to demonstrate.

This is just to show how the phone is laying on the table. It looks perfectly flat. Also, when held in the hand, looking on edge, it looks perfectly strait. THERE IS NO BEND!!!

Now I am pressing one the phone and the light is thinner. I have not moved the camera.

Even if you are right, which I doubt, ops phone isn't bowed, look at a bow, now at ops pic. Ops is bent right around the volume keys that's it, clear as day to see. It's not a bow, it's very clearly a bend in the area (other than sim tray) that's been shown in multiple bend videos and pics to be a weak point.

I think its fair enough Apple refusing to replace bent iphones.
I have had my plus since launch, carry it in my jeans, front and back pockets depending in which pocket my keys are in. And my phone is still flawless.
Because should Apple start swapping out bent iphones that is caused by idiots anyway, they will have thousands of customers waiting till there iphone looks a little beat up, then simply bend it and go get a new one.
There not stupid, just some of there prima donna customers seem to be.

You totally don't sound like a jerk at all.

"I haven't bent my phone so that means anyone who has is obviously an idiot"

Some gems from the OP's post history...

I'm not sure why the OP is all riled up. Apple makes their living preying on uneducated consumers with too much money and not much sense.:apple:

How many companies release an inferior product (iPad Mini) when the have all the capabilities to release a Retina Mini at the time of release. Enjoy being gouged by Apple :apple:

Apple should be worrying about the competition. Hence why the best new feature of the iPhone 5 is the extra row of icons.

Note 2 > iPad Mini. Keep dreaming

Apple has been out of the game with the launch of the 4S. Not sure why people are clinging to the 5S to save the day.

This Touch ID is a huge flop.

Suspect credibility... I'd say so.

Either way he has picture proof, also I wouldn't be surprised if op might not be the guy who owns the phone in reality but instead just posted the imgur links here, and in reality it's someone's else's who has the bent phone. Doesn't make the situation any less valid but still.

Given the situation, and the desire for Apple to replace bent phones. How do you stop someone from purposefully bending their phones?

As some point out, it's a cosmetic issue and not covered by warranty.

What if the bend is within a certain tolerance?

Apple should follow the scratch-gate protocol. What did they do there?

All those gate haters, um it's locked in. Everything is a gate, since Watergate. It's a part of our culture. Thank you Nixon.

Apple replaced my bent 5s on Sept. 8

just stopping in to say,

My 5s, which cosmetically was perfect bc of a case was taken out of that case to be sold. This was when i first noticed the bend in my phone. It was bent from the volume buttons to the opposite top corner of the phone. I could clearly tell that it had bent at the "weak spot" created by the volume button cut outs. The metal back was pulled away from the screen just barely. I didn't even notice IRL- i noticed when i was posting the photos to craigslist.

I took it into Apple on sept. 8 and the genius looked at it. She said, "its good that its just bent and the screen isn't broken. That would be a 79$ replacement (w/ my ac+) but this is free. This was probably caused by sitting on it this angle" she traced the bend with her finger.

I said "I've always taken good care of it and keep it in my front pocket."

She said, "well, it was bent somehow," looked at me and walked away.

She came back with a new phone and replaced mine.

just thought I'd share.

It is possible you leaned against something, over the past year. Since being in a case, you never noticed. Therefore you would not be able to recall a time when this could happen.

I am thinking, the bumper cases are better for this situation. You would know right away if there was a bend, and attribute it accordingly.

you claim that your wife's iphone6+ which she only carried in her spacious handbag miraculously became bent

It might be bent from factory... It's built in China with low cost workers, not in Germany, Japan or the US. We know from consumer report that a fully assembled iPhone does not need that much strength to bend (around 70lbs). Just the back of the iPhone prior to assembly will need much less strength to bend since it's not rigidified by the screen and the circuit board.
Maybe a few employees at Foxconn have fat fingers or are overstressed and do things as quickly as possible rather than correctly... Maybe they had to hire a lot of temp employees for the launch and they have been badly trained...

All I'm saying is, Apple drew a line in the sand. The line they draw is better than 99.99% of companies out there

It's still worse than Amazon for instance - I have had parcels replaced by them when they got stolen in my mailbox. No questions asked and replacement sent as fast as possible. Likewise, for exchanges, they just send the replacement and trust you to do likewise without debiting your credit card (they will, but if they don't receive anything within one month).

When you buy Apple, part of the overhead on the price is that you get great support.

Don't like it? But something else next time. Kick and scream all you want now, but Apple owes you nothing because YOU damaged YOUR phone, especially sight unseen.

Apple owes the warranty that is given by the law. I have two years warranty by the law. If something happens to the phone due to a hidden negligence by Apple during that period, for instance building it with specs clearly insufficient for common use cases, they certainly owe to me to replace it.
We will see in the future how the data on bent phones progress. But if it becomes a common issue affecting a significant percentage of the customers, yes, Apple will owe a replacement (at least in the countries where there are decent consumer laws).

Actually, if the guy just bought the iPhone a week ago, he should be able to just send it back to Apple for reimbursement. That's what I always use when buying stuff that can have problems at factory, such as screens with dead pixels.

If I'm reading the the chat transcript correctly, the OP damaged the phone by "bending over backwards", which I don't think is covered.

Given the situation, and the desire for Apple to replace bent phones. How do you stop someone from purposefully bending their phones?

By making a phone that is stronger. Get rid of any reasonable doubt that its an engineering error.

Not saying that it's apples fault, but the optics look bad, and apple is on record saying that they have replaced these phones. The cats out of the bag now, apple set presidence by replacing phones on record!!

LOL. So basically apple is not replacing their defective phones. Nice. Heck, even Samsung replaced the S4 active when it got water in it and that is obvious user error.

Hey billion dollar company.. Yes you apple. When it's being mocked on Conan you should probably eat it and replace them.

Give me a break. Wether you're a billion dollar company or a local mom and pop hardware store you can't stay in business giving out free merchandise to everyone who makes a claim. Then everyone would be getting free replacem nuts and the company would go bankrupt.
