This update better come soon. I'm holding out on getting one for my niece until it's actually proven to be fixed by software. And I hate last minute x-mas shopping.

How can a change to software make a physical phone screen work better in the cold?
Easy.

They will use your phone's location to work out where you are, look up the current weather conditions for that location, and if it's under a certain temperature will kick off a CPU intensive routine on your phone to warm it up. Once you move to a cooler area, that will be detected and the routine will be stopped before your phone explodes.

If your phone stops working in the cold, or explodes in the warm, then it's not Apple's fault but the weather forecaster's.

How big is Apple's QA department? Must be 5 guys playing rock paper scissors over the best view at the spaceship.

(Having worked in Apple QA..) secrecy is a big issue. If you can only test devices in warm, air-conditioned (keypad/swipe-card locked) labs, you likely won't find issues like this.

There are (or at least, were) also times that most of the testing team don't get the latest hardware, for fear of leaks. I can remember at least one time - many years ago - when a Mac shipped with a DVD tray that kept snagging and re-opening. We didn't catch it in testing because we saw the finished enclosure only when it was announced.

Why do you need elaborate QA when customers ready pay a fortune, report defects and patiently wait for updates!!

Love global warming, its 5 degrees above average here at the moment and the iphone X works just fine :)

You could buy a little electric sweater for it or maybe carry it around in an electric ice fishing sock...

All the cone heads in Apple are now thinking of doing that and making a billion or two more.

In the manual it will say... in order for phone to perform faster in cold weather, please buy our optional fast warmer jacket at £50.

So if your 100000$ car stopped working in cold weather, that would be OK?

Sure the car may have issues, but the steering wheel and brakes shouldn't stop working because of a bug

That is hardly analogous to what is going on here. Should they have done more testing in a colder climate? Probably. But everything has bugs. And this is hardly a show stopper. It will be fixed in a week or two.

Even after paying 1000$?? Would you tolerate that if you new TV did that or Playstation/Xbox did that?

Yes, I would and have.

Electronics with software will have bugs and unforeseen things. This is one of those things. It's going to be fixed so what's the big deal?

**** happens. $25-$100,000,000 - doesn't matter what you pay. There will always be something. Nothing is perfect. Cars, TV's, Computers, Phones, everything electronic.

I'm oftenly surprised how bugs which in the first place are considered as hardware issues can be addresed via software updates.

Today it’s already -11°C. I think Apple needs to do more testing outside of California. Their battery remaining calculation in cold weather isn’t great either. I’ve had my phone go from 30% battery right to off/plug-in more than once.

Came outside to this temp today, used my phone on the way to and from the car without issue.

Looking like I have a device that continues to be okay in these Minnesota temperatures.

Hoping Apple has a fix for those having issues. Having had touchscreen issues in the past, it is terrible to live with.

What are the chances it is actually a software flaw?
I think it is reasonable. Samsung releases such updates for their devices from time to time. I think the most recent one had to do with Palm rejection issues on the S7 causing unresponsive screens on those devices. More recently in IOS, there was a software update to resolve unresponsive screens in iPhone 6s models that had problems after updating to iOS 11.

Apple will just disable the temp sensor, after that you’re on your own. The sensor function is supposed to protect your device. This is unfortunate but your device will work after Apple releases the fix. But the overtime effect on this for the duration of cold weather might be bad for your device overtime. One thing for sure you can always get one next year before you’ll have a very serious trouble.
Or they can adjust thresholds like other brands did for their issues.

This post clamed my mind a great deal, this happened to me when while in route to work. Thought I’d bricked it as the screen was solid black.

I was not aware phones had temperature sensors inside them, so you could use software to change what happens based upon hardware.

This seems to be what some are saying here.
Is this true?

Can software access this to tell you the current temp?

And China is also a pretty temperate country, especially since main testing probably was done robustly about six months ago during the Spring. So you can see how this could fall through the cracks if it is an issue that only impacts 1 out 10 phones or something like that.
If it is every phone, then it better just be a software bug that wasn't caught.

I think chances are you won't be able to get an iPhone at the last minute before Christmas this year. I'd order one for her now with the wait currently at 3-4 weeks. You can always cancel it if this cold weather malfunction develops into something more serious--but I doubt that will happen. Apple has said they have a fix in the works and they can be generally counted on.

It's tough to use in Canada almost anywhere for 8 months of the year unless you're inside. And even then it takes a long time to warm up. When you're warming up your vehicle, that's the prime time that most people want to use their smart phone, but you can't get it to register input.
8 months a year? Unless you live near Hudson Bay that isn’t true.

You probably can for the iPhone too;

I have an Android app that does that on the s7 edge so yes. Also gives barometer reading, compass reading, gyro, gps and glonass info etc.

Amazing really.

Imagine having a career in touch screen calibration? Reminds me of when Pixar has specialists in animating grass.
