My brother-in-law works for Apple's marketing and sales department. The Back-To-School promotion will begin next Tuesday. Your welcome for the news

I asked my friend who works in supply chain and he had no idea yesterday

The way I see it is this, there are enough rumours going round to justify making the end of next week as the absolute final deadline.

Basically put- if it's not happening next week, it's not happening at all.

It's good to know that no matter what, I'm ordering my Mac next week.

From reading this thread, it appears that it's much more advantageous to purchase the Back-to-School items from Best Buy, because (a) they take the rebate off instantly, and (b) you don't have to pay the tax on the iPod Touch [is this true?]

Can I ask two additional questions?
  1. As I understand it, if you purchase via Higher Education discount online, then the Macs come with free 3 year warranties. The only difference with Applecare is that you have to send it in (or get it to an Apple Store). If I buy via Best Buy, will they also provide a 3 year warranty?
  2. I think that if I join Best Buy's Reward Zone program (I think this is a painless and free process), then buying a Macbook Pro for $1500 gets you a free $30 reward certificate. Has anybody tried this?

Were do you live? While I think HE gets you the free warranty in the UK, this is NOT the case in the US.

Yes, free 3 year warranty online is UK only.

For the benefit of students who are in the UK and can get the free warranty I should point out that Apple sent curriers for people I know who had problems. The free warranty didn't mean they had to pay or take it in.

Thanks! Does your BIL happen to know if the deal is the same as previous years? :)

I guess my point is that it seems like they'd just stick with the previous ad until Tuesday if they were going to make the BTS announcement then. No reason to change it for 5 days, when they could have just stuck with the old one. Still, I hope everyone's hope here is correct and they announce it on the 14th.

As much as I would love to agree with you here, I really don't see how it's such a big deal about them changing a picture. In my opinion its just obvious that theyre momentarily switching back to the regular ad until they release the BTS. The previous one was to lure in graduating college seniors, who generally graduate before high schools do. That being said, I really believe it will be the 14th, what else would the promotional materials delivered to the Apple store for the 14th serve a purpose for?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

They are going to have to replace the fathers day ad with something...

well looks like I am going to buy another mac book pro this weekend. Then I am returning the one that I bought a week and a half ago. Hopefully the second mac gets to stay with me.

What is the difference between the 3 year warranty(in the UK) and applecare? Do they cover different things or does the warranty make the appplecare worthless?

There is little difference really. The main one is that the software support only last 1 year, not 3 like with AppleCare. If you phone Apple with a hardware problem they will arrange a repair as normal (or you can take it to a store of course) but they won't offer software solutions over the phone. When my fiance had a fault nobody even mentioned the student warranty, they just typed in the computer's serial number and looked at the expiry date.

There is some question over whether the student warranty is international or transferable. Unfortunately, despite trying, I can't find a black-and-white answer to that in Apple's terms.

Full details about UK education discounts here.

Damn, I hope so.

I was just on to a sales rep in Cork (EU HQ) who wouldn't guarantee me that I could avail of the offer if it happens in the next two weeks if I ordered my iMac today. He also said they've received no word of when the promo might start. Then again, he would say that...

If it aint Tuesday, I'm just gonna have to go and take the plunge. At least I get the three year warranty!

he he

Gotta love how everyone here each probably emailed 300 of their closest friends: "It's happening NEXT TUESDAY."

Well done hitch.

Bummer, the Rapture is scheduled to occur at 9:59 AM EST on Tuesday June 14th; so, only the unsaved will be able to avail themselves of the BTS promotion.
