Not mind blowing but I mostly like it. The chin makes sense, it’s basically the whole computer in there. Kinda miss Space Gray option but the silver is fine I guess.

The ports are a huge bummer, though. A desktop for $1300 with 2 Thunderbolts and nothing else? Come on, you have all the space you could wish for on a 24” screen with a chin and you give it only 2 ports? The entry level M1 Mac Mini has more ports!
And the upgraded model with 2 additional ports? First of all, is it worth it making 2 different casings just because of two more holes? Secondly, when they said USB3 my first thought was USB-A. It’s type C again! Whyyyy...

I'd like to buy the magic keyboard numeric with touch ID for my MBP 16". Is that even possible without buying an imac ?
That only works with an M1 Based machine (iPad Pro would be interesting to know) - so if you might get it, it won’t make you happy

I’ve had terrible experience with the 2020 Intel iMac. I was waiting for the M1 in the hopes that it would be great.
Sadly, no 27” option, and integrated memory and small storage? That’s definitely NOT great.
Integrated RAM is hugely expensive and limiting.
Maybe I’ll try the i9 iMac option, because the i7 has. Even totally unstable.
Integrated RAM is the new normal on Apple SOC with ARM architecture.

External SSD is also the new normal on cost . This is M1- Model 1.0 and the larger machines will be released later in the year, and with second gen SOC - Don’t worry.

That said the transition to all Apple SOC will take a few years as developers re-code their software, or at the very least get their Universal binaries out .

Evidently those that have tried M1 in mobiles, and the mini recommend the 16GB over 8GB models for headroom

This RAM upgrade is available as a build to order option .

Casings aren’t different it simply two slots not milled in the process

Looks like in parity with what the iBook was to the PowerBook back then.. Maybe that's the plan all along? put this line to email consumers and bring some iMac Pro (back again), or Mac Pro (with more accessible options for pro - enthusiasts)
Well time to keep taking the juice out of my 2016 MBP with the 5600XT eGPU for another year I guess.

It’s fine. I constantly forget to charge it at night. When it goes flat, plug it in, walk to the kitchen, or around the house for a minute or three. Come back, it’s got enough charge to last the rest of the day. It’s literally not a problem

It’s not fine at all! I have to recharge my Logitech Pro only every few weeks, I don’t want to plug it in daily! And while it’s charging (which obviously takes longer than a few minutes) I can still use it.
Apple’s design is just inferior and interferes with productivity.

While I wish it wasn't there (I've ALWAYS wanted it gone since the iMac G5), I find the chin to almost be iconic. There's no mistaking this for anything other than an iMac, although I wish the Apple logo was there.

I also find the power brick brilliant... the Ethernet plug on it means one less cable cluttering a desktop.

So you were cool with soldered RAM, soldered SSDs, butterfly keyboards, single port on MacBook, single port type on MBPs, the TouchBar (2016), the new Mac Pro price, the new Mac Pro wheels, and the $1K stand (2019)?
The Touch Bar!!!!! OMG I forgot about how much I hate that 🤣
And yes, the single usb C port on the MacBook was also the idea of a genius 😄

Some of Apple's very odd choices here becomes clearer when you realise they are aiming to turn imac into a ipad on a stand, and charge 3x the money for it.

1. lightning cables fray easily. using magic mouse with lightning cable plugged in on the front will break it.

2. if magic mouse has be a wired mouse for X amount of time, that's not really better than the magic mouse 1 where you just spend 1-2 minutes swapping out batteries to keep the 100% wireless experience. might as well swap batteries.

3. the charging lightning cable material causes too much friction (and you have to make sure to straighten it out or else you get looped slack), making the wired experience much worse.

4. most existing lightning cables are too short to allow magic mouse to move comfortably when connected to an iMac

5. Plugging it in for 2 minutes recharges enough battery for the whole day. This is still better than the Magic Mouse 1 where you spend 2 minutes swapping batteries. Except, you have 2 minutes of free time to grab a coffee or go to the bathroom.

6. 80 year olds might think a front charging port means it's a wired mouse and leave it plugged in the entire time.
I have two Magic Mice: one with the AA batteries and one with the weird port on the bottom.
I bought a Logitech Pro to replace them because of the charging hassle.
I would constantly forget to charge the newer model at night, so I had to plug it in in the middle of the day and, like you wrote, do something else in the meantime or plug in a corded mouse.
The Logitech needs to be charged only every few WEEKS (if you turn the LEDs off), can be used while charging and, why not, can be used as a corded mouse.
Why shouldn’t I have the option? It really uses the usb protocol when plugged in.
It even uses the infamous micro usb to be charged and, even if I had it for many years now, it still charges like day one.
I can highly recommend it and I wish Apple could take inspiration 😄

That's usually how it always ends up being. I think it depends on the age level. I'm sure many between the ages of 7-21 will immediately find these new colors appealing. The rest will warm up to them or end up going for the Pro (which may have a space grey color) model if one will ever exists.
As far as I’m reading, most people don’t complain so much about the colors but about the lack of some (black, all white, space gray; maybe Apple will offer those for the pro lineup) and mostly about the bizarre white bezels. Which would be perfectly fine on a... white iMac.
It’s just maybe the first time (or the second if we count the trash can Pro) that a Mac design doesn’t get a majority of “Wows”. And I’ve always been an Apple fanboy!
You have no idea about how happy I am with the new M1 processor of my new Mini.

You have the option to use a different mouse. If you "constantly forget to charge", then the magic mouse isn't for you.

For me the design on the 24" is a dealbreaker. The back looks great, but the front doesn't look good. I don't think the colors work well with the white bezels - it's somehow disturbing for the eyes.

Hoping the design on the larger model will be with a more subtile looking front.

At least they have kept one thing the same - upgrade pricing. £200 for a £40 SSD upgrade.

Thank god that didn't change that.

Here's a quick and dirty mockup I did with how the 32" will look with the chin staying the same as on the 24". I don't people will have much to complain about (assuming we'll get pro colours and black bezels as well). It's all about proportions.

The stand will probably be a bit wider to match and the bezels not as thick, but you get the gist.

Which one is a Microsoft product and which one is Apple's?

Incredible how the roles have been reversed.
OMG you’re right 😱
It’s the first time in my life that I like a MICROSOFT design better!!!
Imagine a computer with that design but with an M1 processor and MacOS, THAT would be the machine of my dreams!
Apple please, please please give us a GOOD surprise with the Pro iMac lineup!

I think it's really cool they brought back all the colors and love the design as well. I'm sure they'll have more serious color options for the larger/pro iMac later this year. Exactly like iPhone 12 vs iPhone 12 Pro.
I am really hoping they will keep some fun colour options for the "serious" iMacs but I fear we are stuck with drab ones. Maybe a iPhone 12 style blue if we're lucky.

I guess the new power connector and loss of ethernet is simply a consequence of the reduced thickness. There is just no way to put an ethernet port or the conventional power connector into something as thin as half an inch.

I can see the point in doing it, but I really hope this connection is strong. Getting slight pulls on the cable is quite frequent, be it with one's foot or adjusting the height of the desk.

These would look fine for a price sub 999 USD. It's a first gen product, for sure, but the chin and thick bezels scream HP - not Apple.
