There's another forum discussing this very problem right now. According to them (via a rep named "Duncan" at Apple support):

"When you placed your order from Apple.com, there is a box you must check to even proceed to checkout acknowledging that you will adhere to AT&T Terms of Service, service plans, etc. Then AT&T sends you a supplemental email that you have 72 hours to respond to accordingly. Failure to respond to it sends a code to Apple telling us to cancel your order as you did not agree to these terms and conditions."

I personally did not get any such email from AT&T sending me to that website.

Did anyone else?

Went to AT&T sitebto check upgrade eligibility and found an order for an iPhone active with AT&T. This must be the reason for apple order cancellation. Funny part is that I did try to order from AT&T once at 12pm EDT on 15th, but I never received any confirmation and AT&T site would not show any orders on 17th (last I checked).

Where did you find the "active order" on att? I want to check to make sure I don't have one.

Solution

This time the Apple rep (Jeff) was quite good. Didn't blame AT&T at all. Admitted that he had no idea why Apple's internal system decided to arbitrarily cancel my order at noon. He checked the possible reasons (multiple orders, upgrade eligibility etc) and basically just said "Who knows". I appreciated the candor.
He also said that there have been many of these and that they will submit the order again with the same order number. He claimed that these orders are being prioritized and we may have to wait until the 25th but that we should get one of the initial batch.
Who knows.
Anyone else have a different experience while trying to get this resolved?

I got no such e-mail. That sounds very fishy to me.

I just went to that link and put my email and order number in and it said it couldn't find my order.

BUT, when I go to the Apple Store and check order status it is there and prepared for shipment.

After an hour on hold i finally spoke with an Apple rep. He said that this is a problem for a lot of people, caused by an error with AT&T's system that accidentally recorded my one Iphone purchase through apple as 5 iphone purchases. According to him AT&T then cancelled all purchases but didn't reset my upgrade eligibility, thus I would have to call AT&T to get it reset. I got through to AT&T after no more than 2 minutes. Their rep informed me that apple had checked my upgrade eligibility 4 times but that it was good each time and, here is the best part, still good right now. Therefore I would have to call APple back to try to place my order again. Now, the apple guy said that all of our sales numbers were being kept, that this was "going to corporate" and that we (those affected) should be able to get the iphone still on the 24th. After another 40 minutes on hold I just got through to the apple rep. I have my doubts. Let's see how this goes.

The last lady that I talked to from Apple told me that they had no idea what At&t would be doing to compensate those of us whose orders were cancelled for no reason. I was put on the same list as you and told that I could place another order and that I would get it in July.

There is a link 'view orders' on the right side of page, click it and search by wireless number.

I asked 4 different reps (I would have asked 5 but she hung up on me) and they all told me that there was no way to put my order back through with that same number, they made me place a new order.

She hung up on you? I highly doubt this.

Yep, she kept insisting that At&t had messed up and when I explained that I had ordered it through the Apple site she then offered to call At&t with me still on the line and then hung up. Thanks for assuming that I was making things up...

This page looks really sketchy. Look at how the coding is all off on the top navigation bar. I'm not entering any info there, and I know no one that got an email sending them there.

If you entered your info from that link I would go change my password now!! That appears to me to be a fake website to steal your info!

This page is not bad. I had a problem with my order, called apple, and the sales rep had me type this address in. The problem is people confuse the order number and sales number. It is two different numbers. I kept putting in the number that started with a w, which is not the sales invoice number.

I don't think that site is fake. After all, what can they do with email address and order #? (I hope nothing lol)
