I returned mine yesterday. Dam shame too as it was a lovely device, but I just was to dam paranoid using it even in a case knowing just how easy it bent.

Its bad enough they jacked up the price 200 dollars for no real reason (Face ID is cool, don't get me wrong, its not 200 additional dollars cool though)

But that quality control where it could bend THAT easily is just insult to injury and apple seriously needs to stop cheeping out and put quality aluminum or Stainless steel in it for what it's charging.

Now, lets be realistic here no one is expecting a super durable military grade product. If you want it that tough, you put it in a high grade case like the OtterBox, as I've done with all my previous iPads.

But here in lies the problem. If its already bent out of the box, that means its already structurally unsound and already has a weak point.

Now if you put it in a case or not, that weak point is always going to be there just waiting for it to get worse.

If the simple act of putting my iPad in a backpack is going to risk damaging it (case or not) then to me its a unsound and compromised product that just normal use is going to damage it, and not worth owning.

Its a dam shame as I really did love it, but im not getting stuck with a 600 dollar plus repair fee for something apple designed faulty in the first place

If they come out and say "Hey we're stopping production and adding stronger aluminum to them, then I'll consider a repurchase.

Until then (which is unlikely to happen), then im not going to spend that kind of money on a product that is naturally that fragile where I can damage it using it normally!
So you returned a perfectly fine iPad because you were “paranoid” about it bending which is totally unrelated to the article about a bend during manufacture?

That by definition is why it's a stereotype (generality vs the outliers).

FYI, I’m a software (formerly mechanical) engineer with a MacBook Pro. If I was mechanical and had to run 3D CAD software, I’d run either PC or Windows on Mac. If I had to run Windows, I would do it in a VM as oppose to Bootcamping.

Yeah I still have my 2010 Mac Pro and my Macbook for portability. The former just gets remote desktop use for legacy apps now since Apple abandoned us for so long. I've migrated over so many things to Windows that I'll now probably pass next year. It's unfortunate.

Come on really, I love OSX as much as the next person on MR but Windows 10 is not laggy and in many ways runs better then OSX these days.

Yeah but OSX does not do mandatory auto updates which break your PC.

... that and the privacy stuff.

Microsoft are borderline unusable for me now - they have fallen so far, in quality and privacy terms... from when they were a reliable Enterprise grade company.

Back on topic. I will wait out this version of ipad pro - despite needing an upgrade to my trusty Air. Partly cos' I saw one in the shop that was already bent. Apple are in denial. I am not.

Woah don't produce actual photographic evidence of a bent beyond tolerances ipad. You'll trigger the Apple defenders. Waiting for the "just take it back for a replacement" comments. Or "if it stills works then don't worry about". or best one "it looks fine".
What part of anecdotal do you not understand? Who is disputing that some are bent? The question is, how many and will Apple replace iPads out of the 400 micron spec.

Apple likely will sell 12M iPads this quarter. Some are going to have issues.

Why not look at at iPad pro 10.5? The only real knock is it has a slower, but a still fast 10X. You can get one for $500 at Microcenter.

This forum member has said he had his ipad returned as they couldn't see any bend.

Yep, fully agree that Apple will sell some duds due to mass production and yes it's all about how they handle this. With some real world examples and the current comments from Apple it would appear they don't see a problem and that is the problem.

Try to understand, and I'll speak for myself, that this looks like a potential lottery of buying a ipad pro with or without a bend. I want to buy the new ipad pro and do not want a bent one. Right now with all the information I can read it looks like I could expect a bent one and that potentially Apple won't make it right.

Until I make my purchase and see how it plays out I don't know how it will be, but with all purchases I do some research and for me it doesn't look like a good purchase choice. Now if Apple come out and say "anyone with a bent ipad can fully expect a replacement, no questions asked" then I will have more confidence than I have right now.

What's playing out on the forums reads like this to me: some users are claiming to have bent ipads and the forum is responding in a negative way across the board. Either some members think the user bent it, or suggest the owner should just ask for a replacement. Some user have claimed they have not been offered replacements or have had to pay a fee. The Verges articles paint a picture that Apple are aware of some bent units and claim it's normal. This is creating a negative response because it make Apple look arrogant. Some forum members think this is acceptable, either because they think a slight bend is OK and doesn't trouble them or because their personal unit is fine. This dismissive response is pushing other members to make it clear that for them this is it unacceptable. And round and round we go.

Exactly how Apple should be treated for its bent products.

The opposite of anecdotal is statistical (scientific) proof of the bent iPads/iPhones. That is for Apple to do, not the individual buyer; mainly because the numbers don't get revealed unless a class action suit is filed.

Apple manages to keep statistics of individual sales under wraps, surprising for a publicly traded company.

So, if an anecdotal post (photograph) or a sample in the Apple store is curved to the naked eye, I will not be purchasing that model, and will be telling anyone who will listen about it. They still get to make the choice, but word of mouth is still a fierce factor in sales of items, especially luxury devices from Apple. (Or Microsoft or Google or HP)

I think it’s pretty clear within the post that they felt the new iPads are not structurally sound and therefore not fit their accustomed use case - hence it was returned. The new ones are clearly less rigid as we’ve seen in “bend tests”.

Clearly it has nothing to do with paranoia as you have pointed out.

Edit: Sorry, omit the paranoia part as I did not notice it in the original post you were referring to.

Riccio says that the iPad Pro's design "meeds or exceeds" And your is point is?????? So if your standards were that they don't HAVE to work that would make it right? OMG! Selling my 2 shares of stock soon as I can, and trying to find a way out of this Apple eco-system! ???????

You seem to have not noticed what Apple's design standard is/has been the past 3-5 years?

Everyone in the design studio and at least 50% of the millennial tech reviewers on youtube must have the following reaction when first seeing it - "OMG PONIES IT'S SO SO SO THIIIIINNNNNNN OMG OMG THIIINNNNNNN!!!!!! (O-Face)"

In that respect, it does indeed seem to "Meet or Exceed" Apple's current design standards.

See also: "Pro" laptops made so thin that Apple can't include a keyboard that isn't uncomfortable to type on for anything longer than a tweet or Facebook post about how OMG PONIES THIN it is. Even as a BTO option.

I hope this clears up any confusion on the matter.

What are the odds that the wooden table is "perfectly level"? I know my custom wooden desk is not close to perfectly level.

Is this the mind set of Hardcore Apple fans? Seriously...? It's the table that is bent not the iPad/Tablet itself? This is worse than those that make the excuse for Siri and how cities now have more than one zip and no AI could possibly work that out.

Again, a couple pictures from individuals doesn’t make a trend. You need some statistics on how many have this issue.

My friend and I can post a picture of our new Samsung S9s and say we bought them instead of iPhones, so sales must be low. Then I can post the iPhone sales data and you could see your experience didn’t translate to the truth.

There is only 1 truth. We don’t know how many have issues, so examples of a few that do doesn’t prove it.

This is called arrogance. Per Apple......**** and use your bent +$1000 iPad and like it!!!! Nothing to see here!!!!!

No, I don't need statistical proof to shy away from buying an expensive "toy" or device. When I see the device in store, hold it my hand and operate it, I develop a like or dislike. If I see bent devices in the store or in unboxing videos, that is enough for me to make a decision.

Yeah, I do know the meaning of anecdote - and if I didn't, I know how to search for the meaning, thank you very much!

I look forward to Apple’s official word on the topic. Obviously they have some explaining to do. I suppose the best case scenario of all of this is that they strengthen their materials and increase quality control procedures. Hopefully those with the issue are well taken care of, as they should be the loudest group on the forums and speaking to Apple directly.

This doesn’t really add up does it. He says it has to be within 400 microns, which is 0.4mm, which sounds fair enough. But that photo looks like drastically more than 0.4mm of bend.

Yea the photo isn’t really tied to the comments from Apple. It’s a bent iPad, but Apple isn’t saying that specific one is acceptable or anything. That one was possibly bent from being put in a backpack with pressure.

I was hoping that MacRumors would've removed that photo by this noon - not at all part of the article. This whole article is badly managed, a quote that doesn't seem to exist anywhere except in the Verge's imagination, leading to so much discussion, then an excuse of a reply from "Dan" - such a mess.

This has literally cost them about 6 iPad sales from just me alone. Way to much flex when I held it in the store. My friends and family are holding out. Really a shame that this is up to their standard.

Its planned obsolescence. Give it 3-4 more years when the device becomes old and voila touch disease pops up and Apple would be only to happy to sell a new iPad.

Yea it’s certainly not framed well in any way for Apple. I’d imagine the issue is a bit overblown knowing this community, but it doesn’t mean Apple isn’t in the wrong here. They should address it directly and offer to replace the bent iPad’s. I think that’s pretty much the best they can do.

See how many times you said “l” in your post? You’re entire thesis is anecdotal.
