I think Apple will do three things:

1. Introduce non-retina mini with A6 starting at $299.

2. Introduce retina mini with A7X starting at $399.

3. Introduce iPad 5 with Touch ID and A7X for $499.

The retina iPad mini will not replace the current mini. I learnt my lesson with the 5C, Apple does NOT do cheap.

I reckon the mini will go the 5c route, old hardware with a new gimmick. My prediction is the new mini will have iPad4 guts, and a retina with the same res as ipad 4, just shrunk, this will be the gimmick.

Ipad 5 will be A7x and touch ID, new shape.

My iPad 4 is still running very very fast but if the iPad 5 can reduce weight by about 20%, shut up and take my money. If there isn't significant reduction of weight, I may buy the iPad mini if it has a retina display. ;)

I am waiting for Apple to confirm this.

I feel like a broken record, always saying "only Apple can confirm Apple doings/releases" but no one seems to listen.

Fine ok, you all win. If you want to believe others rumours (quite plausible rumours at times) as fact, go ahead. Your loss.

I will take this for what it is, rumours based on information gathered.

PS. This is in effect only a word change from confirmed to rumoured. But the principle of it is huge. Well huge to those who actually care about it. Most people simply don't care about this.

PPS. People still use the words iPad 4 when Apple has never released an iPad 4. Apple have released an iPad 4th gen. For supposed Apple fans/fanatics they don't care about correctly naming their products. I would have thought Apple fans would have cared more. I guess I was wrong there too.

boring
now apple give me 17" A15 ipad micro 128bit OS to play my favorite counter strike 1.6

They shouldn't differentiate. Nor should the mini be cheaper. It's absurd that people think the mini should be cheaper. In technology, when two products have identical specs, the miniaturized one is the one that took more R&D to produce. Smaller tech is more advanced tech. The mini should cost more.

The only practical reason for the mini to be cheaper is if it's got inferior tech in some areas, like camera, CPU, fingerprint, retina, etc. If it's identical but smaller and cheaper, Apple is sacrificing profit margin.

Android tablets are cheaper through a combination of accepting lower profit margins and using lower quality (cheaper) parts.

That's why the mini will have the A6X, and not the A7X, like everyone is assuming for some strange reason.

Who cares if they do? They used to update their iMacs (and other comptuers) several times a year. Hard to imagine now, isn't it? Your iPad 5 will continue functioning just fine if an iPad 6 happens to be released* before the yearly cycle that some people seem to think they're on, even if it's generally the pattern.

*Just like how the iPad 3 still works.

Yes yes I know but there is no way apple couldn't have just made the iPad 3 the iPad 4 it's not like technology was 7 months held back on accident.

yay

look at the little brothers :)

all lined up... ready to be announced....

well i'll be dammed, Apple is actually gonna tell us the price of the nifty "trashcan"...

As for the new OS,,, I'll be on that one, so if Apple servers are hammed, you'll know who the culprit is :)

That's because Jim Dalrymple keeps proving you wrong. And we keep telling you that but yet you also don't want to seem to listen either. ;)

Exactly.

Pure speculation on my part but I think what precipitated Apple's stock into a downward spiral earlier this year started with a very negative reaction from Wall street about the lower margins on the iPad mini.

It took two years for Apple to bring the original iPad to retina while keeping roughly the same margins, battery life and size (though the iPad 3 was thicker and heavier than the 2, and slower in some instances).

Anyone thinking that they can do it in just one year, keep the same price AND get the most powerful Ax CPU is delusional.

That's all a gimmick? Wow. You think things just happen? You have any idea how much engineering such a product will need?

If they manage to do that that's an achievement

I doubt that Apple will sell an iPad mini with A7X Chip and a retina display and a 8MP camera at the price point of $329

Finally the announcement! And the iPad Mini Retina is supposively has the same chip inside as the iPad5 - A7! But wonder if it could be the A7X?

So you're saying the WSJ is wrong?

Here's what the WSJ is saying (emphasis mine) :

The fifth-generation iPad is expected to feature a thinner, lighter design akin to the iPad mini’s, and an improved camera. It will run Apple’s new 64-bit A7 chip. The second-generation iPad mini will be upgraded with a retina display and also likely see the A7 incorporated into its innards.

First, they are more than likely wrong about the chip name, because retina iPads need a much more powerful GPU (A7X).

They are very affirmative about the 'A7' in for the iPad 5, but carefully worded what they said about the iPad mini. "It will" vs. "likely".

While I do believe that Apple leaks stuff through the WSJ, it doesn't mean they get every little details right. If this article was "written by Apple", it would have said A7X.

Of course I'd like to be proven wrong, but as I said Apple got slammed by stock holders for the lower margins on the iPad mini, if it does feature an A7X it will be more expensive than $329.

Maybe A7 without the X is powerful enough to drive the 2048 x 1536 display given that its graphic capabilities is similar to that of the A6X?

Would love to see them continue to sell the current mini in the $259-279 range. I'm likely going to be buying two minis for the holidays for my two kids. The iPad mini is a great device for the 2-9 yr old range where newest tech isn't needed and the smaller size works well for small hands.

Anybody know when they released the iPad 3 (retina) and continued to sell the iPad 2 what price the iPad 2 dropped to? Was it the same $499 to $399 that they currently are at? If so I would think a $279 price would seem reasonable.

Just give me 2GB RAM in the full size iPad (with a mini like form factor) and I'll be a happy camper.

Shaking my head at the gullible sheep in this thread now hoping for Touch ID in every Mac gadget. You know where this is heading right? If the NSA aren't collecting fingerprints at the present time, there's no telling when Apple will recieve a secret court order demanding Apple to start collecting and turning over all finger prints without the consent and knowledge of the users. Have you myopic people learned anything at all from the revelations these last months?

How can Apple " turn over" something they don't have?
