I just don't understand why people are going ******* over Haswell processors -- the only thing they offer is slightly better energy efficiency on portables. The performance increase is negligible, heck their Ivy Bridge counterparts even bested the Haswells on over 70% of the benchmarks. For the most part the Ivy Bridge is a faster processor than the Haswell. It is nothing to phone home about....not in the slightest.

Think the same people are hoping for spec bumps/price drops in the rmbp, particularly the 13" rmbp.

iPad Mini 2

I can see 64-bit iPad 5 is pretty much set, but I don't see it in iPad mini 2. Why? to cannibalize iPad 5 sale (same A-7 chip, retina display and 8-MP camera, but the mini with portability)? iPad 5 with 64-bit A7 chip, finger print sensor will be differentiating itself from iPad 4 and Mini and also the selling point which iPad mini 2 should not have. Why would Apple want to put 64-bit A7 chip in the mini while all it needs is Retina display with current A6 chip to continue to sell like hotcakes?

I think Apple will do three things:

1. Introduce non-retina mini with A6 starting at $299.

2. Introduce retina mini with A7X starting at $399.

3. Introduce iPad 5 with Touch ID and A7X for $499.

The retina iPad mini will not replace the current mini. I learnt my lesson with the 5C, Apple does NOT do cheap.

But there already is a non-retina mini with A6. You mean they'll keep the 1st generation mini and drop the price? I could see that.

iPad Mini will be getting a retina screen... It's a must on Apple's part. Especially... since the Nexus 2013 received an improved screen.

64 bit A7? No... But I do believe they will get a A6X to improve battery life along with that retina screen. And the TouchID is up in the air, I wouldn't be surprise if they leave it out... Yet it wouldn't shock me if they add it. But You are right.. they will rather save all the flagship features for the top range iPads. The 5th Generation will get all the bells and whistle... My money will be on that..

Yep. That's my guess too. Overclocked A6 (along with better battery) for Mini.

Nothing wrong with paranoia, but it should be based on reality.

What's the NSA going to do with your fingerprints?

What makes you think a chip like that, designed specifically to protect the privacy of the user, would even be capable of reporting a description of your fingerprints to anyone?

There are no laws that would allow a court order like the one you stated. So there would be no obligation for Apple to do what you say. And since such reporting doesn't happen by itself but has to be implemented by some engineers, there is no way such a thing could stay secret.

Nevermind the fact that if the NSA really wanted your fingerprints they could already get them very easily, if they don't have them already!

no it's A5.

I stand corrected.

Shaking my head at the gullible sheep in this thread now hoping for Touch ID in every Mac gadget. You know where this is heading right? If the NSA aren't collecting fingerprints at the present time, there's no telling when Apple will recieve a secret court order demanding Apple to start collecting and turning over all finger prints without the consent and knowledge of the users. Have you myopic people learned anything at all from the revelations these last months?

That horse has left the barn. Having been fingerprinted a million times now, I imagine the NSA already has every single one of my 10 fingerprints, and probably all the other .gov entities too, and our allies, and Interpol, and any enemy state or simple hacker that's got a hold of the database too.

At this point the little grey aliens in Alpha Centauri probably have my fingerprints.

The difference is the size. I have the full sized iPad but want something just a bit smaller but not with inferior specs. For me, it's like the MBP 13" or 15". It should have the same specs available in each, but for some people the smaller screen makes more sense for however they intend to use it.

Fair enough - size is a big concern. Like you said, it cuts both ways - some people prefer a smaller device and other want larger screen.

My point is I don't think people would want to pay an extra $300+ if the only difference between the two is screen size. The price points dictate that there has to be functionality differences.

will not happen, but Retina Mini 2 with A6X.

It may not but I'm hoping it does, especially if the A7 64 bit is the future. I'm hoping Apple doesn't continue to consider the mini an inferior product. I want the smaller screen personally but don't want to settle for inferior specs. If it does come out with the A7, I may very well hold off on replacing my iPad 3.

You can roll your eyes all you want, his point is well taken. Apple absolutely is not as focused on their computer line than they are the iToys. And, as you rightly point out, that while they spend and MAKE billions off of their Mac line, Apple is obviously more concentrated on the more profitable iToy line of consumer products.

For those of us who have been Mac users for a long time, we can only hope that Apple spins off the Mac division as a separate entity. PC's are far from dead, but Apple doesn't believe that and I fear the day is coming when they announce "in 2 weeks we're going to quit making Macs 'cause hardly anyone is buying them"....

After-all, they've done it before.

What will iOS Apps be developed on then?

there is no logic in that..
they will never make a non retina mini, there is already the original mini which is non retina and 9/10 wished it was retina.

here's what they will do : release the new mini with retina and A6 at similar price of current mini (current mini is already premium price in it's class, they cannot make it more expensive),reduce the price of original mini until stocks last (will probably take another year until 3Rd gen mini becomes available).

The OP from this thread said "iPad mini 2 will NOT have retina display, stop dreaming!"

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1482306/

If it does, he will get slammed :D

No retina = no sale. No one cares if Apple put A7 64-bit chip in Mini or even fingerprint sensor without retina. All it needs is retina display and better camera for 120fps video. No reason to put A7 chip in a mini while A6 can do a perfect job.

If outside of the US, you get scanned as you come in to the country. At some point or other most people have been fingerprinted. So what's the problem? It's there to keep you safe.

Apple doesn't care about the computer anymore. Look at how long they let the Mac Pro languish without any significant updates. That's why they removed "Computer" from the company name and are now Apple, Inc.

Apples priorities have changed to mobile devices. This doesn't mean they don't care about computers. Why are they releasing a new MacPro and why do they continue to update their line of MacBooks and Macbook Airs? They still care about their computer line. It's just not the top priority. So with this in mind it seems to me your statement is rather foolish at best. ;)

I'm not sure what you mean by $300+ difference. The difference between the entry level mini and the entry full size is only $170.

ironically the 22nd is the day im having new Windows installed :D

this year is "meh" on the apple releases, its been a non-event Mac Pro (i had to build a PC to do the job instead as i am not going near the dead duck tech that is thunderbolt, or a non-user-upgradable/serviceable chassis on a "pro" machine) and i don't both with the "s" releases of the phones/pads.

im more excited about Mavericks and multi-monitor support for "spaces" than anything else apple has done or announced this year to date.

Hopefully the iPhone 6 and iPad mini 3 will bring something new to the table next year

If they didn't care about it they wouldn't have updated the Air this year. There is no doubt that eventually they will leave it completely behind. I just don't think now. :)
