Why DO so many mac users buy something from MS, a company they despise so much?

Where is it stated as fact that as a mac user one has to despise MS, does that mean that if you have a Sony TV you aren't allowed to plug it into a 360 or a Wii becuase in owning something by Sony you automatically hate Nintendo and MS.

That's flawed logic man....

I like OS X personally, and I've never been a fan of Windows, or of some of the things that as a company MS do. But I love playing L4D on a wednesday with 7 of my mates on my 360, hell if the Mac was a viable gaming platform I maybe wouldn't have bought the 360 in the first place. So as a mac user I'm maybe more critical of what Apple does, this is why I rant when a newly released computer doesn't make my breakfast in the morning or do my ironing, so I'll threaten moving to windows, knowing deep down that my threat is empty and hollow :) Lust like many others on this forum :p

Does everything have to be black-and-white for you, BMWFan? Is it not conceivable that there are people who are Mac users but who also appreciate some of the good things Microsoft does produce? Mac user != Microsoft hater.

Like . . . a few mice and keyboards?

Or maybe that update to the update to the update to the update of Microsoft Updater?

Or Windows MSN Live Mail (or was it Live MSN Windows Mail Messenger . . . Live?)

Oh wait, wait . . . it must be Songsmith! Right?

Or a warmed-over Vista that's actually a back-asswards lousy copy job of OS X? Again . . .

Or that big-ass table?

Oh wait, it must be Exchange! Yes! Ok, Exchange, then. Now THAT is an exciting service! LOL!!

Come on now, stop with the sarcasm, stick a couple of joysticks on that big ass table and you've got a killer space invaders rig :D

But it lets you play Rainbow islands too, everybody wins......

I don't know who are the more depressing - Windows trolls or Apple fanboys.

...

Actually, they're probably about the same.

Well, for one 90% of the people buying computers want something as cheap as possible just so they can get online to check MySpace/Facebook and to watch YouTube. Why would they get a 1000+ dollar machine if a 300 dollar one does the same thing just as fine? Went on a small rant on this subject on my site few weeks back actually, take a look: MichaelFlux.com - Mac vs PC: The cost of ownership

Pretty fair article and there is no doubt that Macs are more expensive but from my standpoint (I don't just use my laptop for internet use only but more CPU intensive apps like you) I am willing to pay for the extra money so I can use a computer I know is more consistent when it comes to crashes (I know some PC don't crash but from this thread it seems as though more PC do compared to Macs), don't have to worry about viruses when it comes to legitamite websurfing and an operating system that I really like compared to windows which is not bad but I want Mac OS X on the computer I own so when I buy a new laptop its going to be a Mac but I do see your point why Windows are cheaper and a person who just wants it for word processing and internet use should buy a PC if they want a cheap alternative.

They're all equal degrees of suck. Especially the ones who don't actually USE the competition's products, yet come here and bash repeatedly without firsthand knowledge of what they're speaking of. In other words, if you haven't used OS X or Windows 7 for more than a week, you probably don't have a leg to stand on when bashing either.

Have Windows and Mac market shares switch and see how long that lasts. Safari is rife with security holes that can compromise one's system. One of which was demonstrated by a hacker last year, and it only took a minute or two to exploit.

can someone please put a bullet in the head of the "market share" argument already, PLEASE?!!!!

Honda Civic and a Bentley sit side-by-side in a parking lot. A person determined to steal a car that day walks up to find both cars are unlocked with the keys in the ignition making them both as vulnerable as the other to be stolen. For a brief moment he considers jumping in the Bentley, only to realize the error of his ways. When asked later by his buddies why he took the Civic instead, he responds with "f$ck the Bentley, a lot more people drive Civics. Obviously it's the better car!!"

The definition of "troll" is quite obvious (see BMWFan - MacRumors (read: site dedicated to Apple products and customers) member for one month, 175+ posts, almost exclusively raging against Apple and its customers (methinks he has Windows User Traumatic Stress Disorder)). But how do you define "fanboy?" Someone who doesn't agree with you?

Frankly, I find the use of the word "fanboy" to be a lame copout - it's a word people throw out when they have nothing substantive to add to the debate. Generally thrown at Apple users by Microsoft users who have no idea what the other side is about.

Hmmm, funny, I didn't know there's screen like this one. Haven't had a problem with my iMac G5 since August 2005..ehm..that's when I got it.

I've seen it once since I started running Mac OS X 10.0 on a Cube. So Mac's do crash -- albeit rarely in my own experience.

I think Windows fanboys and Apple trolls are the most depressing... :D

I'm afraid I have to disagree there, Windows and Apple fanboys pale into insignificance in comparison to PS3 and 360 fanboys, I find that breed of people so sad that I want to cry/laugh/scream all at once :)

Most of us Mac users DO use Windows products - at work or elsewhere outside the home, perhaps fixing Windows for friends and family. Sometimes we have no choice.

Most of us HAVE used Windows products, having chosen to switch and not continue using them. In fact, Mac users are the most informed of them all. We make a concsious choice not to use Windows, despite being inundated by MS products at every turn. So we've developed a healthy mistrust of MS' offerings. We didnt have to use Vista to know it was going to be crap. We didn't have to buy a Zune to know it was going to be crap. We didn't have to use XP (though most of us have) to know it was a virus-trap waiting to happen, or that Fisher Price green and blue looked like ass, etc., etc. MS has a way of fulfilling prophecy in this area.

That's the beauty of it. A lousy reputation is very difficult to redeem, and it's all too easily reinforced.

MS reinforces its own reputation. And for that matter, so does Apple.

I'd love to see Microsoft's next ad

I can see it...some shopper is in the check out line of a big box retailer with a MacBook under their arm...all of a sudden a large, bald, sweaty monster pops out from behind a rack screaming "developers" and hurling chairs at the shopper until they drop the Mac and run out of the store crying.

It's still an MS product. And EVERYONE knows it's an MS product. So why do so many mac users buy something from MS, a company they despise so much?

Well, I guess you haven't seen the posts saying how much Zune sucks just because it's from Microsoft.

As someone else already said, Mac fan != MS hater. I'm sorry you can't seem to separate the two (or are unwilling, since it would hamper your trolling), but just because someone likes Apple products doesn't mean they automatically hate all MS products.

I think the current Zunes are crap, but that's due to the design, not because of the label.

I would never buy a 360, but that's because they're horribly unreliable, not because they're an MS product.

I do however like Windows XP, like Windows 7, and I love their server products. Windows 2008 Server is definitely their best yet, and I love working with it.

On the flipside, I don't much care for the new iPod Shuffle. I'm not a big fan of the Air. I think the Time Capsules, while pretty neat, are not worth the money given the cost of wireless routers/APs and 1TB drives these days.

See how this all works?

It's called evaluating individual products like an intelligent consumer and commenting on them like a grown-up.

Really? I'm not into gaming, so I've never heard one of those battles. I can imagine though.

Just check out any article on ign.com every time it turns into a flame war, it's most amusing!

I didn't think that was allowed on the internet ;)

But yeah good point, although I find it personally amusing a company I do work for is planning on migrating to Ubuntu for most of their needs, but I think that is about saving some money on licensing fees because MS in the enterprise can cost some serious money in the long run!

I can dig it, but that's the thing - they're slowly redeeming that reputation. Windows 7 and Server 2008 are, in my opinion, top-notch operating systems. I think that Office 2007 is fantastic (not so much the 2008 offering for the Mac. Way to screw that one up, guys). Exchange is still as solid as ever, and in terms of "everyday" software, I think that Windows Live Photo Gallery, Windows Live Writer, and Windows Live Mail (best free mail app I've used, and I've used them all) are great. Granted, they've got a LONG way to go to make up for their colossal blunders elsewhere, but you gotta start somewhere, and their offerings in the last couple of years have been encouraging.

But......

She forgot to mention that she needs an affordable computer (Cause not everyone is Bill Gates or Steve Jobs), PC forgot to mention the there are numerous antivirus out there, headaches usually only go to people who have NO idea what they are doing, and crashing DOES happen on Macs. It happens, not as often as it does on a PC, AND it doesn't happen all that much on PC's anymore. This little fanboy issue is STUPID! It's all about personal CHOICE! I like PC's WITH VISTA! OMG! I like Apples gadgets and gizmos - iPod, iPhone. Apple has a better media player (iTunes). Apple has the wrong idea by not offering there audio in .mp3, though AAC is getting a lot more support nowadays. PCs have an overall higher support rate as there are more peripherals and software made for them. These are just arguments that I have heard and I do share some them as my OWN personal choice. None of them are wrong, none are right. Buy what you like, share about what you don't but don't take it overboard.
