It seems like this is a software issue, so it can be fixed with an update.
Flash was always bad, I think that's why it's the most noticeable thing to fail...

Most Adobe apps have some irresistible urge to use up all the CPU power that's available. Photoshop is the only Adobe app that I still kinda respect...

The default settings in flash cause this in my experience.

Right-Click (Control-Click) on any flash movie... go to setting... and uncheck "enable hardware Acceleration". Close browser and reopen... verify settings...

if someone already posted this... my apologies.

Flash is garbage either way on Macs. Im on 10.5.8 MBP, and flash content is still terrible at loading. Not as bad the that video though. Not a big you tube flash fan either. even on the iPhone it sucks. get alot of errors and slow loading, even on wi-fi. Hopefully adobe gets a patch or better version out.

I don't believe it's an iMac issue. Since updating to SL on my 2008 unibody macbook, the flash player runs hot all the time. It uses 100%+ processor and the fans jump from 2000 rpm to 3-4500 rpm. It makes playing flash-based games very slow.

My heart would sink if I had recently spent ££$$s on a new 27" iMac and it couldn't play youtube competently. Rev A's once again, alas apple.

well yeah... but NEW MAC + SAFARI + FLASH doesn't really fall into the "every single" category.

that's more like day one, 3rd thing tested sorta category.

one piece of hardware and their own browser on the most popular plug-in is not really that difficult a test, ya know?

SO let me see if I got this straight...

Apple needs to test not only its OS and its OWN internally developed applications and the open-source projects included with OS X for QA issues but also the MANY THOUSANDS of 3rd party applications available of OS X too?

Gee I hope not because if they maintained that same philosophy with the iPhone and iPod touch we'd all be dead before we ever saw another OS update on those devices... What are we up to know? 75 THOUSAND different apps is it?

...
This is unfortunate for people that made the switch by purchasing these new machines. Hang in there guys. :)

Thanks for the sentiment, but I'm perfectly happy with my new 27" iMac. It plays Flash videos and Flash games (for the kiddies) with no problems. And even if there were a problem, I never liked Flash anyway. I was actually glad that the kiddies couldn't use it on our 5-year-old Win XP box (CPU couldn't keep up). Just in case anyone thought Windows never had any problem with Flash...

Well, maybe not thousands... but I think there's a valid point to the idea of Apple testing.. you know... flash. That thing that we all hate but is used on 95% of websites out there?

This isn't like asking Apple to to regression testing against MeteorBlastSuperExtreme 1.3.2a43.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION!

I've seen people who have resolved the issue, or at least stopped it until Apple gets a fix. Be aware that people are reporting that it extends to almost anything involving video, games included:

DISABLE AIRPORT.

Yes folks, Apple is repeating the issue that they had with crashing 4850s! Reports are that disabling Airport fixes the slowdowns and choppiness. Don't ask me why, but that's the word I'm getting. Give it a shot if you're having issues. This appears to apply only the 4670.

This is pretty good advice, but I don't think it'll solve the problems.
Mine is a mess. Everything runs nice and fast after booting until watching a few flash videos, then the entire system gets extremely slow (Crossover Games speed was terrible until trying again after reboot). I've tried cleaning caches, running the flash uninstaller and then reinstalling it, but no luck. I think flash is somehow causing video memory to leak.

Also, what's the deal with the anti-mac flames on this forum lately? I thought moderators clean those worthless comments out quickly.

Apple needs to address the suckyness of flash on the iMac because _________ ? Try to keep the answer under 20 words if possible... ;)

Because it has 100% deployment and makes Apple look bad. When IE was crap, Apple made Safari. When Office was in doubt, they made iWork. When PDF became a standard, they built it into the OS with a fast viewer. Apple could either fix Flash for Adobe, or write their own plugin. Being "Obstinate-Steve" means they have done nothing except pretend they can ignore the problem.

Well that's f*ed. However, I've been experiencing problems with flash crashing in Safari since Leopard on both a Powerbook G4 and my new MacBook Pro.

My flash has been like that for the last year and a half. Essentially I have had to stop watching Hulu because of it.

Apple's response was that Flash is just poorly coded on a Mac. My own solution that might help some of you is that you clear the data in your flash presences. That usually fixes the problem for a few at least a few days.

You do realize Adobe is a large company with a lot of programmers right?

They also make the Flash plug-in for Windows and OSX. It is up to Adobe to address this problem not Apple.
If Apple were to "write their own plugin" it would do nothing because in essence you're saying Apple should re-write the Flash plug-in and give it to Adobe.

Adobe would never allow that to happen.
This problem is a direct result of Adobe not caring about making Flash better.

Microsoft has it's own Mac Unit that makes cross-platform applications such as Silverlight, which is actually better than Flash. At least Microsoft tries to make their product better. I have seen no desire on the part of Adobe to make their OSX products better. They simply do not care because the web uses it so much and Windows holds a 90 something % share of O/S's.

Flash player is garbage. When will people wake up and stop using it.

We wish we could do that....but when 90% of the websites out there are using it, including internet banking sites, we have no way to avoid it.

Yes it is bloatware and the single most painful experience even in the fastest computer systems but it has infiltrated the web like cancer and it's not going anywhere anytime soon...so saying 'don't use it' isn't really an option

For those who keep saying that "just restart" or "take into the apple store" as if this is an isolated case, its not. This is clearly a widespread problem that won't be solved in the long term by restarting, and there is nothing the apple store can do about it.
Did not see anything in the video.
Well, after viewing the pointless video I couldn't see anything wrong.
Are you two serious?? The video showed that the audio and video were playing back very choppy, and when it showed activity monitor, flash was taking up 101% of the CPU power, with not much else running in the background. This is clearly a problem.
If I can run flash well on a 2002 Power Mac, there is no excuse it on why can't run on a new iMac. There's probably a simple way to deal with the problem, like reinstalling software and OS, etc.

Really? My iMac G5 from April 2005 plays it terribly.

doesn't flash play slowly on all macs?

Well now we know that Steve meant quads were for the semi pro market but this is not good. Should be fixabe though however to make a semi pro or Promsumer device sine there is ni midrange headless, they really need to add eSata, express slot and beat GPU you can get.

Still don't understand that apple fails to see prosumers make up a larger number than pros and would make a fortune.

its is, but i prefer noscript, does the same thing and more

Is it available for Firefox?

shocker, apple has an issue with industry standard:rolleyes: at this point i don't think its fair to isolate strictly to adobe as SL has had some issues with performance and is still being vigorously updated.

I work for Apple Specialist retailer and we've noticed some issues with the 21.5-inch iMacs as well. We've upgraded most of our workstations to these iMacs and have gotten a good bit of use out of them.

Flash performance in general is a fail. I haven't noticed any of the other issues, but the flash performance is obvious. Anyone tried updating flash to see if it corrected the issue?

FLASH COOKIES

Another bad thing about Flash

Yes there are Flash cookies called "Super Cookies" and they are NOT deleted by the normal browser deletion methods. So they are used to track your web usage.

To delete Flash cookies automagically, use Firefox and the BetterPrivacy Addon.

There is also Ghostery, Ad Blocker as well.

Also adding a addition to your /etc/hosts file to block your computer from accessing malicious sites.
