Purpose I believe is to get the market ready for the iPhone that’ll be all around wireless for upcoming year(s)

I’ve seen so many tech people/youtubers being happy that “MagSafe is back!”. I’m not sure why they are falling for this marketing name that has nothing to do with the old MagSafe. There were no accessories that you could attach to the MagSafe port of a laptop. The “Safe” part was that if you pulled Your MacBooks cable by accident it would safely detach, that won’t be the case with an iPhone. I think removing the phone from the charger will probably need two hands. I really like the use of magnets on the new iPhones but it think it’s stupid they use MagSafe name for it.

They most likely used MagSafe because the AirPower name is a joke now because of the failed product 😂

Doesn't help for cars that have wireless charging with max speeds higher than 7.5w, but that won't ever be able to take advantage of the higher speeds since car makers aren't going to offer a retrofit for a magsafe version in existing cars.
Don’t fret my dear, you really don’t have to buy a new car to charge your phone!
Magical invention called superglue or even Velcro.

Apples product naming has been chaotic for some time and is just getting worse.

Android is doing 50w wireless charging and apple sticks to 7.5 Qi shocking

It should be 15w for normal wi chargers the MagSafe isn’t like a wireless charger more like a cable so not interested I wanna just drop it down on my wireless chargers, why didn’t they allow 15w Qi charging like every other phone in the world

MagSafe isn’t what is means, it will need to hands to take phone up not as easy as a normal wireless charger where no one had any issues with, they are getting annoying now how can android wireless charge 30w and iPhone 12 is stuck on 7.5

why didn't they do the normal charger plug with a magnet so it gets in easier? then all the wireless sht would not be necessary at all.

I definitely would have rather seen them sticking with the standard for 15w charging with existing in car wireless options and other pads than requiring another charging cable and connector but that's Apple for you.
Yeah, at the very least make it compatible with Qi 15W. But as it is now, my car charger is enough to trickle charge using GPS and streaming Apple Music over BT and my bedside charger is fast enough to have it charged by morning. Having thought about it some more, at least the magnetic ring will make for a better way to mount it in the car. Still should be backwards compatible with newer standards, not just the old 7.5W.

Apple has really messed up on this one for me, making me pay crazy money for a magnet wireless charger where it would need to hands, no one ever had a problem with wireless chargers they could of made it 15w on Qi but they choose to make us pay for special chargers

So, can someone clarify this new charger for me?
  • I have an iPhone X and I am planning on getting this charger for my iPhone X. Will it be charging at the higher rate of 15 W with my iPhone X?
  • Will this charger auto align with my iPhone X as shown in the press event?
Thanks for answering my questions!

If my iPhone sticks to the puck when I lift it (like Clark Griswold's sappy fingers glued to the magazine in Christmas Vacation), then what's the point? How is that even "wireless?"

I rather think it's more convenient since this one i can lift the phone and use it while charging. I cannot do this with regular Qi wireless charger.

  1. X is qi only, so will do 7.5W max. The new puck will only do 7.5 for Qi too, so even another Qi device that supports high watts would be 7.5
  2. No. Only iPhone 12 has the magnets built in.
save your money and get a Qi charger for your X

So on Apple store app it says this charger is compatible with my 11 Pro Max. I thought it had to have magnets like 12/12pro?

It’s compatible because its a Qi compatible charger which will work for any Qi compatible phone. There’s no need for magnets to use the charger. Having magnets just means the phone can center itself and receive the full charging power of the puck, which isn’t using the Qi standard.

You don't need magnets to charge a phone. Your 11 Pro Max will be charged with 7.5 W with this charger.

I just love all the negative comments. Had this MagSafe charger been put out by Microsoft or Samsung then the naysayers would be like, "Hey Good Job Microsoft" "Excellent work Samsung" "Apple take notice!!" So obvious people here are purposely being hateful simply because it's Apple. It's just another charging option. Get over yourselves.

There is another brand called Pitaka that makes a slim magnetic carbon fiber case for many models that basically does what this does. Meh. I love "this is just another charging option." Basically. Reinvent the wheel and sell it for more to a bunch and of gullible consumers.

I'm sure I'll end up with three of these by the year end. Oh well. Lol
