Apple sells the products that make them the most $. They make more $ selling larger more expensive phones than they do selling less expensive smaller phones. It has also been shown that people with larger phones spend more at the App Store. That doesn't mean that there isn't a demand for smaller phones or more people wouldn't chose smaller phones if given a viable choice. They also know that a large percentage of those people who would prefer a smaller phone will just give in and buy the larger model anyway. Apple also has a history of letting products stagnate, then claiming they are discontinued because people aren't buying them.
I’m sure Apple does profit less on lower priced iPhones. But they’ve had an iPhone at $449 for years. And they’re apparently about to have one possibly even lower, at $399.

But I don’t buy the conspiracy theory. If you asked people, would you rather have a 4” iPhone at $399 or a 4.7” iPhone at $399, what percentage choose the small one? At a given price, do you think people would choose a 55” TV over a 65”?

Sure, there’s a few who would want the smaller one, but not many.

And you’re mistaking cause for effect. When people stop buying things, Apple stops refreshing them as often. They don’t need a pretext to justify discontinuing them. On the other hand, popular products in high demand are constantly upgraded. But refreshing an unpopular product doesn’t suddenly generate demand. It’s just a newer version of a product people don’t really want.

I'm not sure about this.

Nobody wants a cheaper, smaller, less-capable iPhone. People want the best of Apple, and those iPhones are already on the market.
You are not correct. Some people want Apple and need better speed and a bit better camera, and no way need 11 etc. A cheap a13 with bit improved camera will appeal to a lot of people

There could be an event in March this year, iPhone SE type of device and new iPad Pros are possible. Will be interesting to see if there is anything extra like Tags or maybe the announcement of a streaming bundle.

Apple Music, Apple TV + and Apple Arcade all for one price would be a great bundle I think.

This is going to be plenty phone at a great price for a LOT of people currently on an 8 or older.

Hotcakes.

I added the emphasis above.

I have a 7Plus with 128GB and I believe I paid $1100 for it when it was released. According to Apple's iPhone Comparison website, I am 4 generations behind the iPhone models. When I compare my 7Plus to the 11Pro, I find:

-11Pro has better facetime/selfie camera...I take 1 selfie a year, if that. FT is only a few times a year.
-11Pro has better slow-mo...I would never use it.
-11Pro is a tiny bit larger. Ok, but actually I wouldn't mind a bit smaller.
-11Pro has A13 chip vs A10. Ok, it's faster processing. I own about 5 apps. I'm sure the 11Pro is more responsive in some ways (and yes, as the years go on with iOS updates it WILL get slower) but a newer CPU every year or 2 is a given.
-11Pro has no 128GB option so I must get the 256GB which is still $1126

So why would I upgrade to an 11Pro? It's the same cost as 4 years ago with minimal improvements (at least for my use).

Now, given those small differences after 4+ years/generations of innovation, my bet is Apple's upcoming "cheapo" iPhone is going to have similar or worse specs than the 11Pro...yet the 11Pro, in my eyes, really isn't anything different than the 7Plus. So why would I plunk down even $5 for some new cheap iPhone that is essentially the same as what I have now?

I would prefer to hold out for some new iPhone that has substantially improved specs AND a much lower cost than $1100...such as $599. If I have to pay $1000 again, it's going to be 5 years from now.

The key dimension for SE fans will be the width. We like to use the phone one-handed.
Length? Not as important. Weight? Lighter is better. Thickness, yeah, thinner if possible.

Small is good. i have an iPad, and do not need a huge phone in my pocket.

Will it have Qualcomm chip??? if it has Intel ... this thing is DEAD to me!!!!

Pretty much a big reason why I haven't moved up from my X. Makes me wonder how well Apple will do with their own modem once they release their own, which will be based on Intel modem business they bought.

It is not a conspiracy theory, it is simple business. Make and sell the devices that make you the most money. No I'm not mistaking cause and effect, I believe you are! ;). You believe Apple stops refreshing them when people stop buying them, I believe people stop buying them when Apple stops refreshing them. People can't buy something that doesn't exist and of course sales drop on older products that aren't refreshed.

It will be interesting to see if the iPhone 9/SE2 comes in as people are expecting it to at the price point people are expecting it to.

I really don't know the percentages of who would chose the smaller phone over the larger for the same price. The 4" iPhone is too small for me as my "main" phone, but can certainly understand those who still prefer it. Some people prefer portability over size. To a limit I do too! I still prefer the 13" MBP to the 15/16" MBP and would gladly pay the same price for the same features. It is why I prefer my 11" iPad Pro vs the 12.9" iPad Pro. I have several friends who went to a Plus and then back to a non-Plus because they didn't like the size. I tried going from the 7 to the X and absolutely hated it (it felt like a brick, was too hard for me to use one handed among other things) and went back to my 7.

This is going to be interesting. Can’t wait to see what Apple releases.
I don’t know—it’s just an iPhone 6/7/8 with new internals at a lower price.

I mean, do you care at all about the rear cameras? Because that’s really the biggest difference and you only talked about the front facing one.

I’ve been saying for years there won’t be another SE with it’s useless tiny screen.

The SE screen isn’t useless. It is, from my perspective, perfect for how I use my phone. That is, I primarily use it as a phone. I don’t need a big screen for a phone. I also use it as an iPod. The screen size is irrelevant to playing music. I also send messages and look at websites when on the go. The screen size works fine for that as well.

I actually find a larger screen useless. And I find the larger phone size resulting from a larger screen to be less than ideal as the phone then takes up more space in my pocket.

I realize lots of people like big screens. But not everyone does. My desire for a phone that fits well in my pocket far exceeds my desire for the latest phone or an Apple made phone. So I hold onto my SE hoping Apple someday makes a product for people like me.

Finally. That price sounds good, which is the absolute maximum I'd pay for a phone. It's actually what used to be the normal price for iPhones before the iPhone XRS MaxPro Air Plus price inflation happened.

6S is the ideal mix between power, performance, features, looks, price, and not being interesting to any thief.

“People don't know what they want until you give it to them” applies to new, unreleased products. For existing products, Apple does a ton of market research with both current and potential customers. They have a very good handle on what people want and how to improve their products.
That's always been (anecdotally, and perhaps really, how will we ever know if we're not Apple executives) true of Apple, at least it was. Taking that as true, though, once Apple came out with the 6 they failed to convince me that was what I wanted. Since 2007 I purchased an iPhone every two years or so, but since buying my beloved 5c in late 2013, it occurs to me I've bought just one more in the intervening six-plus years (my current SE).

Only now am I considering getting a new phone, and I'm not sold yet (for the same reasons I wasn't sold on the 6 and later). And it's a real statement that since the 5c, and assuming I purchase what I assume will be a "iPhone 8 with an A13," each iPhone I've purchased has been less exciting than the last.

(My partner just replaced the battery in her SE, which is a year or two more recent than mine, and it feels like new to her. That remains an option for me!)
