I second the iBook/Macbook wishes, but maybe the lack of anouncements is just a technical issue, and the products Steve hinted at in January just aren't ready. We all know how bossy he is and perfectionistic, so he won't demo a new product that isn't perfectly finished. I rather wait a month to get a perfect Macbook, than have a Macbook now with flaws.

Worst case scenario

I believe that the worst case scenario would be no announcements until Apple's annual, high profile presence at NAB:

http://www.nabshow.com/

I really thought that they would have waited to announce a Universal Binary version of Final Cut Studio at this professional broadcaster's industry event. Needless to say, I was very surprised to see Apple release FCS in UB last week:

http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/

My point is that SJ and other Apple exec's have indicated over the past few years that they will announce products/services as soon as they're ready to go, and not necessarily wait for a special or "Expo" type event which may be a couple of weeks or even a month or two away.

Here is my preferred April '06 Apple announcement schedule though: :D

Week of 03/03 - 03/07 [PRESS RELEASE]:
Intel MacBooks introduced via press release and simultaneous special media event invitation for the following week of 03/10 - 03/14.

Week of 03/10 - 03/14 [SPECIAL MEDIA EVENT]:
Special media event held to celebrate Apple's 30th and discuss it's past, present and future which will lead into the introduction of the vPod, iMovie Video Store [iMVS], and a "Home user features" demo of the Mac complimenting MacPod/MacPad/Mac Mobile [ultra thin, light-weight, low power clipboard-sized pda/tablet hybrid] using the ULV Core Solo processor that we now know will be announced on April 16th:

https://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/03/20060330173411.shtml

Week of 03/22 - 03/27 [NAB 2006]:
With the ULV Core Solo now available, a full demo of the MacPod/MacPad/Mac Mobile [ultra thin, light-weight, low power clipboard-sized pda/tablet hybrid] showing off the previously demonstrated "Home user features", but also the "Pro user features" and how it can be used to compliment any Mac at home or in the workplace, and of course FCS [PowerPC or UB] running on any Mac [PowerPC or X86].

That would make my April!!!

I would rather Apple released the MacBooks now, and I would still wait a month. This way, I still get my MacBook in 1 month, but all the bugs will have been discovered and fixed by then. :p

Apple historically announce things on Tuesday

However, they have been saying for the past couple of years that they will make announcements whenever it is ready to do so. We have seen them make non-Tuesday announcements several times over the past couple of years, even on a weekend.

Yet, they do still make announcements on Tuesdays for the same reason that the majority of music albums and movie releases take place on that day. It's also the same reason we always vote on Tuesdays here in the U.S... maximum public attention and turnout.

if i use photoshop cs2 on a pc, will it work on a the intel macs?

Savage Henry said:

Not necessarily. If you own a copy of winBlows XP and aren't immediately concerned with the ATI video drivers for the Intel Macs, then check this out:

http://onmac.net/

However, if you don't like the idea of not having the ATI video card drivers available yet, then know that there is a contest currently taking place to get the drivers working on Intel Macs by those same people that got XP to work on Intel macs:

http://wiki.onmac.net/index.php/Developers/X1600_Contest

Not trying to pick an argument with you Savage Henry, just pointing out other facts and options [present and near future]. :)

hey, thanks macQuest-that was helpful and some good news for me...and just to note...I'm getting a new mac because 'winblows', does blow, and i'm so tired of ctrl-alt-delete'ing and restarting...what won me over most about macs was tiger OS X, its so clean.............and the community support forums are wonderous...hahah

Let's all realise that less than a year ago, the first intel Macs were announced to be released in June 2006, that's 2 months away from now.

We'll have none of your "rational thinking" there, Macnoviz!

This is a rumor site, and we'll ignore all reasonable, logical thoughts and ideas in order to rant about our unreasonable and il-logical Apple products/services, and their associated un-reasonable and il-logical release dates set by us.

Wow! A tablet would be amazing...just not a hybrid (with folding keyboard) form factor...Make it a compact slate and I'll bring the credit card out immediately! :D Man, I really hope you're right...:)

I agree with you, no keyboard! Unless it's a virtual one for quick and easy text input, not meant for intense typing because that's what the Mac is for and this would be a product that compliments any Mac, NOT replaces it!

However, I don't think a "compact" slate would do either ;depending on what yoiu meant by "compact"]. I'm picturing something that would be the size of a clipboard and that can be held/used like one [one hand and arm holds it, the other hand can then be used to select and/or type minimally.

Something like this [but 9" x 12"ish in size for full 8.5" x 11" page viewing, 8" x 10" photo viewing, and widescreen video viewing when held in landscape orientation]:

http://www.macshrine.com/2006/02/25/mactablet/

The 3rd image in that series, if you use the CD for proportional sizing, would make that tablet about 16" x 20"

Again, I picture this MacPod/MacPad/Mac Mobile to be a thin, light-weight, low power and clipboard-sized pda/tablet hybrid that can possibly be stood up like a picture frame in either portrait or landscape modes.

Maybe there'll be Home and Pro versions. Why not?

Oh, and of course NAB 2006 would be used to introduce the 17" MacBook Pro AND the new widescreen 13.3" MacBook Pro.

I really don't think that Apple is going to abandon the smallest member of their Pro noteobook line that they marketed so heavily to photographers and professionals who wanted a smaller form factor than the not-so-portable 15" MBP.

Now that i'm fully f***** off

That theres no sign of a MacBook - my iBook's going on eBay later, in anticipation of the MacBook.

Looks like i'l be on a 1GHz Celeron for a while...

The *are* MacIntel XP video drivers, just not accelerated

MacQuest said:

To clarify - "if you aren't immediately concerned with 3D-accelerated ATI video drivers".

Obviously, XP has drivers for the ATI video chip - otherwise all these photos of XP on a MacIntel would show a black screen (or maybe 640x480 in 16 glorius colors).

What's missing is 3D hardware acceleration for OpenGL and DirectX. Microsoft only supplies basic 2D support in their installation, along with a software-only driver for OpenGL/DirectX that uses the 2D support. (3D functions work, but more slowly because the CPU does the work.)

3D accelerated drivers have always been provided by the graphics card/chip vendors.

Maybe it's changed for CS2 - but in the past Photoshop hasn't made much use of 3D. It should be perfectly acceptable with the standard driver. (And benchmark reports like http://gearlog.com/blogs/gearlog/archive/2006/03/21/8212.aspx confirm this.)

iBook and 10.4.6

Does anybody think like me that the fact that 10.4.6 has not yet been released despite many suggesting that it is ready to go, is linked with the fact that it may contain some code that is iBook/MacBook specific (e.g in the System Profiler code). Therefore it won't be released until the iBooks/MacBooks have been announced. Could this mean an imminent iBooks/MacBook release (tuesday)?

Spot on, mate.

10.4.4 was for the iMac

10.4.5 was for the MBP

10.4.6 is for ???

alternative movie download service announced

Has anyone else seen the news about all movie studios - except disney - announcing the start of a download-to-own movie service this week?

Me thinks this means that their is a good chance of disney features being added to iTunes this week. Hopefully this means a media event, and along with disney downloads comes the MACBOOK!

Pretty please.

Macbook Tuesday!

Please, please, please, please bring out a new MacBook shortly. My trusty old iBook G4 800 Mhz is starting to feel a bit creaky and I can't handle it any longer! I want my MacBook! :D

I am so close to just buying a MacBook Pro because I just can't wait any longer! .....i must just hold on for a bit longer!!!

Wow. A non computer person who doesn't know how to handle windows. Please tell me your not in the IT field. If you are your customers need their money back.

What the? Lay off, joe blow. Nobody said anything about IT field. What is this condescending talk? A non computer person doesn't know how to handle Windows? Well, yeah. Like 99.9% of the world. IT people have a job for their patience with poorly written software, or they are actually useful by creating computer content. Windows is something you need to handle with care, like a fragile time bomb.

I know how to handle Windows. You still get errors. Why? I didn't write the software. Period. I'm not in the IT field, so you can unwad your pants. It's not a thing to brag about, being able to handle Windows. Many people are switching because Windows is unacceptable. Basically, you are saying "Oh look, another guy who can't put up with an OS that produces umpteen errors...haha he went to Mac so he won't have that problem. Serves him right!" You see the problem there? The problem is yours, not his (or hers). If you want to be married to a crap OS with 50 million lines of (code) fat, you can. The slimmer 2.5 million lines of Mac OS can be attractive to those that do not hold self abuse and trumpeting the failures of products as virtues.

"You wuss, you can't force yourself to deal with a computer that doesn't work! "

I say to you, too bad you can.
