I got a credit on my data plan for this month and got it subtracted completely off of my bill.

I order a hotdog at the costco food court and I come home crapping out curry, do I go and sue the hotdog brand (kirkland) or do I look at costco and complain? (we all know kirkland series can be any brand name repackaged).

Of course I'm going to blame AT&T.

Of coarse you will, but you have to blame who has responsability in the matter. In this case Alcatel. You already know they were responsable for the failure after issuing a software update. So why continue blaming AT&T for someone else's failure after full well knowing who is at fault?

Renton/Bellevue, WA July 14, 2010 @6.24pm:

AFTER iOS 4.1 beta 1 update, here is the rate I am getting. I don't consistently get 210kbps upstreams, but i do get 4.5mbps and up downstreams.

I don't consider this "FIXED" by any means.

Did you just recently get back your 4.5+ download speeds?

Did you say anything specific to get that? That's pretty good compensation I think.

What the hell is going on? NYC: 169kbps down, 79kbps up

I'm back to less than EDGE speeds on 3G?!?!?!

I ran a speedtest about 10 minutes ago, and got 168 kilobits down and 1 kilobit up! Called up ATT. The CSR told me that 2 of the 3 towers in my area of Columbus were already fixed, and the third was in the process off being fixed right now. It has an estimate completed time of 3:30pm today.
I've got my salt shaker ready, just passing along info.

It is amazing that come CSRs know about the HSUPA issue and others don't...EverytimeI call AT&T about this issue, they say to call Apple and then Apple says to call AT&T.
As it was posted up top, I am going to call and ask for credit on my bill.

Did anyone update their iPhones ? I just did and I noticed that my speeds are worse now for some reason, but I am not sure they are related..

this is still an issue here in North Jersey / NYC burbs- cannot break 44 up !!! LOL

They better fix this , it has been 2 weeks already ! I really see myself returning this even if I don't want to ! I checked out the Droid X today just by curiosity and check its speeds, I was blown away (by the speed) and had to leave because I was upset !

Update: July 15, 2010: @7.08pm

The location in which I was at yesterday (july 14) showed my downstream to be around 4.9mbps while the upstream was around 210kbps.

Right now, I am in seattle and it shows me around 2500mbps downstream, but < 95kbps upstream so it's back to square one again.

Please AT&T, get your crap together.

as hard as we have to grind thru this traumatic experience, don't return your phone just yet.

I mean, for me, the iPhone 4 is just so good. I have a case on it since day 1 and I tried to convince myself I will go naked but hell no, after witnessing my friend drop his, I don't think so.

The only issue I have now is with AT&T. The upstream needs to be fixed back to normal and I am giving AT&T a chance to do it. They're just incompetent but I am on good faith with them it will get resolved...when, I really can't tell.

I tried going back to my old iPhone 3GS, man, it sucks. Resolution screen quality is really bad :(

You said it ! As much as people are blaming Apple, for their reception problems I think AT&T is to blame as well !

i guess i didnt really pay attention earlier- so can someone help me UNDERSTAND

this "capping" issue is really a problem caused by a vendor of ATT who apparently supplied some hokey signal stuff... that worked miraculously until July 1? or did the new hardware get installed July 1 and as soon as it was installed, the upload went to hell?

I also wonder why isnt the whole of the US affected? why just the bigger cities?

Daily bump.

Downloads were a little faster than usual last night, but they've since then reverted back to the capped speeds. Same as uploads. Still waiting for the fix. NYC suburbs

my download speeds have doubled in the last 2 hours and uploads passed the 100 kpbs mark for the first time.

This is addressed earlier in the thread, but admittedly it's getting long...

Alcatel-Lucent supplies the networking infrastructure gear in some, not all, of AT&Ts markets. That gear has an issue which is causing the upload (and likely, download) slowdowns.

The issue was fixed in Michigan about a week or so ago, but for some reason that fix either hasn't been applied to the other cities with ALU equipment or it isn't effective there.

The slower download speeds aren't bothering me as much as the high LATENCY. Surfing to a website on Safari takes longer because it takes the phone an extra 2-3 seconds longer to first send and receive the packets, and only then start to load the website. This causes the whole browsing experience to feel slower than it really is. You'll notice the latency difference if you surf on wifi.

I have faith that AT&T will get this fixed sooner or later. Hopefully sooner than later though. I'm just surprised more people aren't noticing this more than the whole blown-up "antenna problem."

Get used to it; high latency is a part of 3G.

LTE is specifically designed to have much much lower latency.
