we've gone over this again and again. This is more than fair for people who are already under contract.

I respectfully disagree. That is easy to say when you are not the one having to deal with it.

You must have an old "grandfathered" plan. Sprint's current bottom shelf unlimited plan with data + 450 voice is $69.99. The only difference is Sprint also includes unlimited SMS, so if you do a lot of SMS then Sprint is $20 cheaper since that is what ATT charges for unlimited SMS. Otherwise its a wash.

Also if you are going to wait for a CDMA iPhone do it in a comfortable chair. It's going to be a Loooooong time, like probably never.

That looks like a Sprint SERO plan.

I disagree. What is the difference if you just extend your contract another 2 years? If you have 2 months or 18 left it effectively is the same thing.

You and others may have, but not me, so check the attitude.

AT&T is subsidizing the iphone, which means for they're immediately starting out $200 in the hole (they're paying Apple $200 per iphone sold). Over the length of a 2 year contract they eventually recoup the subsidy costs and gradually slide back into the black (positive $ revenue).

AT&T would never recoup those costs nor make a profit if they kept allowing customers to buy subsidized iphones prior to their 2 year contracts being up.

I fear once I try to do anything that involves my current phone I lose the $20 plan add on and it becomes the $35 add on.

ATT sucks. Ok. I said it.

ATT has stated elsewhere that 2.5G phones (even ones purchased or activated after the 3G iphone goes live) will be eligible for the old $20 plan.

My understanding is that no iPhone leaves the store not-activated.

No-commitment simply means you don't have to sign up for service long-term...

Right but can't you just sign up and then stop the service after one month. Can AT&T remotely brick the iPhone?

It still sucks that someone will be opening my iPhone and be the first one to touch it! They better clean the screen afterward and put it nicely back in the box.

1) Its still no known how activation will take place, only rumors. It's possible to activate a phone by just bar scanning the IMEI code on the outside of the box. I've bought many phones at BestBuy etc, where signed an agreement and left with the phone sealed in the box. When I got home called Sprint. Done. If I did not call Sprint w/i 30 days BB would charge me CC for the full cost of the phone.

2) If they do take the iPhone out of the box it's got a plastic overwrap. That is what they'd be touching, not the screen.

I'm confused about the enterprise plan. I am not going to upgrade to a 3G iPhone but I do want to download the iPhone 2.0 software for my current phone and use it with my company's exchange mail. Am I going to have to pay more $$ to do this?

Family Plans

Are the two lines included in the family plan both including iPhone 3G data rates? The chart doesn't really specify. I would hope so as the price is a little high.

Is it possible for new customers to choose a regular family plan and then just add a $30 3G data plan to one of the lines? I have three people on my plan and only I would have an iPhone. Ideally I want the 1500-2000 minutes (~$100) + one basic line ($9.99) + iPhone data ($30) + texting (~$20). This would be nearly comparable to my current setup with a 1st generation iPhone on T-Mobile's family plan.

Also, is the unlimited text package for the family plan limited to covering two people or could three people all use it?

i dont understand why everyone is all freaking out over the rate differences between this and the previous iPhone. looking at ATT normal, non-iPhone rate plans, this new iPhone rate plan falls exactly over what you would pay for a Palm or a Blackberry, G3 or not. same goes for the 200 text messages. the first iPhone had data service based off ATT media packages which was cheaper than the PDA packages. now we are based on the PDA packages. this is completely acceptable. why should iPhone users get to pay less per month than other cell phones from ATT?

Just got off the phone with AT&T. I currently have a basic Family Talk plan, 550 minutes w/3 lines (1 iPhone, 2 non-iPhone). I pay $100 per month ($60 for plan + $10 each for 2nd and 3rd lines, +$20 for iPhone data). For the privilege of owning an iPhone 3G, I must switch to the new Family Talk plan, 700 minutes, for which I will pay $140 per month ($130 for plan, includes iPhone data, + $10 for 3rd line). Of course, I will lose 200 free text messages. To sum that up, owning one iPhone 3G will cost me $40 extra dollars per month, with associated taxes, plus fees, for minutes I won't use; and I can take advantage of some sorta cool new features and higher speed data; but I must give up free text messages, which if I want them back, will cost me another $5 per month. And now we know why AT&T can afford to subsidize the cost of the phones. I don't know about the rest of you out there, but I will not be adopting the iPhone 3G. It just isn't worth it to me. Hey, at least I won't be standing in line after all.

I respectfully disagree. That is easy to say when you are not the one having to deal with it.

I dealt with this same issue when I bought an iPhone. I paid a $175 premium on my current iPhone. I canceled my existing Treo 700p which had 1 year left on its contract, which triggered the $175 cancelation fee. I knew when buying the treo, that if I wanted to switch out before 2 years were up, I would have to pay.

Also, a heads up to those buying an iPhone 3G. If Apple comes out with a new iPhone in 2009, you will have to pay a cancelation fee for your iPhone 3G to upgrade from it.

So is the iPhone 3G going to flop in Canada AND THE US based on the dissatisfaction of poitential buyers? Hmmmmmmmmm. As a Canadian, I feel that Rogers has truly dropped the ball and just last night, the national news outlets have already started reporting on the negative buzz Rogers/Apple is receiving.

This is bad - very bad - some 11 days before a major product launch

Technically, but it seems like too much of a hassle to go through all that for $25

But it's only 175 if you just signed your contract, MY early termination fee is only like 80 or 90... so I'd save over 100 dollars by doing it this way

looks like since im an ATT customer....but not upgrade eligible, i pay 499 for the 16gb.

is this correct?

i think all theyve done here is eliminate the aftermarket/ebay phones. I mean, who will pay 599/699 on ebay now? no one.

I respectfully disagree. That is easy to say when you are not the one having to deal with it.

Like it or not the ATT plan is inline with every other US Cellco. If you want a horrendous plan go over to Canada. Now THOSE are what bad plans look like.

Okay so if the original/un-subsidized prices of the new models is 599/699, then why exactly is it made of cheaper materials ie plastic? Or is the plastic bit just the irresponsible speculation of the part of MRgoers.

From what I've read, you cannot use Exchange w/ the 2G iPhone. You MUST have a ATT corp acct which means 3G only. Without a corp acct ATT will not pass the Exchange data between your iPhone and company server.

Sneaky, sneaky, confusing

Wow, the mobile phone industry has some bad habits.

Apple controlled the first launch, and everything was simple.

Now, there's 10/mo more for 3G (not available in all areas) = 59 + 10 = 69. But the prices are not comparable because of the removal of a prior benefit text messaging, which makes a $5 difference. But what about a family plan with a new and old phone? What happens with the text messages? Ugh. It also bothers me that text messages, which are close to free for the phone company, are being charged with widely marked up fees. ATT is giving away something of worth (the iPhone and the newly updated 3G network) and trying to get people to pay for services like text messaging that really have no cost but still a lot of perceived value. This is a poor business model that hides actual costs, good or bad, and does not allow people to make decisions based on reality. No wonder the U.S. is several years behind the rest of the world in the mobile phone arena.

This mobile phone business model makes the Apple vision less compelling for me, and I plan to sit out this round.

I thought it was 175 if you canceled ANYTIME during the contract. Where's something official that says otherwise?

If I get two phones on $129 Family Plan, can I have 1 phone with no text messaging, and 1 phone with $5 (200 per month) text messaging?

recently, they have introduced pro-rated cancelation fees, so it drops over time. but these aren't retroactive. so it won't apply to you unless it was available when u signed up.
