It's staggering how expensive AT&T plans are! Wow, at Sprint I'm paying $30 a month for 500 anytime minutes, unlimited nights and weekends at 7PM, unlimited data, and unlimited text messages. Of course, I'm stuck with "not an iPhone" but I couldn't justify spending over twice as much for much less service anyway.

I guess I'll wait until Apple releases it for CDMA.

So if my family is not getting iPhone 3G's but me and we are all on the family plan, what are the prices to add an iPhone on the plan? I remember seeing this on the last prices of the original iPhone, but not on this one.

$30 for data (or +20 if you already have an iPhone) and possibly $5 for text unless you already have the family unlimited package.

Hmm, I might be able to make my line the primary again. If discounts are now available on the iPhone lines..

RIP OFF!!!! Thanks for jacking my rate $10/month plus another $5/month for the text messages I USED TO GET FOR FREE!

With gas at $5 a gallon and food prices climbing, this is a perfect way to stick it to your subscribers!

Do these plans come with a free tub of Vaseline?

In the past (with the original iPhone launch), I never understood where all the "I hate AT&T" vitriol was coming from. Now I do. Add me to the list of haters.

I bought 2 iPhones in June 2007 both are eligible to be upgraded.

Same here

"Upgrade

This line is eligible for reduced equipment pricing when you sign up for a new 2-year service agreement. All iPhone purchases require a 2-year service commitment.

Experience the latest wireless technology with a new phone."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you're an existing ATT customer who is not eligible for upgrade, wouldn't it be cheaper to cancel you contract for 175 (or less, actually it would be only 90 or so for me) and pay the 199/299?

So Cancel and Sign a new contract: 199+175=374 or 299+175=474

that's cheaper than 399/499

Technically, but it seems like too much of a hassle to go through all that for $25

Since some folks here seem pretty knowledgeable about AT&T's billing practices, I'm curious if anyone knows whether rollover minutes accumulated under my original iPhone contract will stick around when I buy my new iPhone and sign a new contract, or if I'll be losing them?

That's called "last dying breath" pricing. I used to have Sprint. They weren't cheap. But desperate times call for desperate pricing. I don't expect Sprint will be around much longer.

I swear they must have jacked up the rates.

I have the 700min family talk plan with 2 lines, and my current bill is $120/mo. That includes the $70/mo for the voice + 2nd line, $30 for my current iPhone/1500txt plan, and $20/mo for unlimited txts for my sister.

Now it looks like my bill will be $160! $129 + $30 unl txts.

Hopefully someone will point out where I'm wrong, but I really dont want to see my bill go up that much...

That $129 is for two iphone lines. While it's not listed there should be a add on $30 3G iphone data rate (To be added on to a existing plan). Call AT&T to confirm but it's listed on the business iphone site. I couldn't imagine AT&T would deny regular customers the same plan as well.

What makes you ineligible if you are a current Non-iPhone AT&T customer is this. And I won't sugar coat it so people will understand:

- You accepted a $100-$200 subsidy on your current phone from AT&T. ie. AT&T gave you up to $200 so you would sign a 2 year contract with them.
- You voluntarily signed a 2 year contract, knowing that if you wanted to buy a new subsidized phone before 2 years was up, you would have to pay $175.

Those are the people who fall under the "inelgiible" to but a subsidized iPhone price. Those people can still buy an iPhone 3G but have to pay $200 more to cover their previous subsidy.

Exactly! I don't what it is about us Americans, but we never read contracts (and rarely understand loans, credit, etc...). A large part of the rest of the world understands that cell phones in general are expensive and don't mind paying for one. Americans for some reason wouldn't buy a cell phone at its real price, so the companies decided to subsidized them with contracts. These contracts are basically loans (you used to have to get a credit check when getting a cell phone) where the provider gives you a loan to buy the phone that you pay back over time along with your bill. It's not that hard to understand.

It still sucks that someone will be opening my iPhone and be the first one to touch it! They better clean the screen afterward and put it nicely back in the box.

will have to wait until i see how this affects my plan. i'm still on my parents family plan with add a line of 9.99. with the first iphone i was able to just stay in their same plan and just pay the extra in data costs. will have to see how that works. i know one person on our plan already pays $10/month for unlimited texts, wish i had the same option. anyone on family talk plans let me know.

You must have an old "grandfathered" plan. Sprint's current bottom shelf unlimited plan with data + 450 voice is $69.99. The only difference is Sprint also includes unlimited SMS, so if you do a lot of SMS then Sprint is $20 cheaper since that is what ATT charges for unlimited SMS. Otherwise its a wash.

Also if you are going to wait for a CDMA iPhone do it in a comfortable chair. It's going to be a Loooooong time, like probably never.

No. It's $30 for unlimited text on the family plan. This covers 2 members and it is $10 for addition all members. My texting plan is $40 and it covers 3 people.

I have a question, though. If you already have unlimited data on your family plan and you're upgrading from a normal phone to an iPhone, will it cost $40 more? Also, if you are upgrade eligible from owning the 1st iPhone, could you use that person's upgrade to get the iPhone 3G if you are on their plan?

You my friend are getting a raw deal. We have 5 lines, and all 5 lines are covered under the unlimited text plan that costs $30 a month, and it has been this way for more than a year

good point!

The no commit phone is going to be 599/699. So $125.

True, that seems to be worth it. But I don't know if that would apply. People buying the no commitment phones theoretically don't want to be in contract so why would they even look at the 199/299 option.

What happens if you don't have 2 iPhones? My fiancee and I have one iPhone and another Samsung phone... will I still be paying a $30.00 data charge for 3G on her phone? The graphic of the FamilyTalk plan says "2 lines" not "2 iPhones".

Thats a good question, I guess I read into the plan that they were all iPhones - since it say 39.99 per line (the usual 9.99 plus 30.00 for data) and unlimited data for all lines.

ATT Limits

I was all pumped to get rid of my Verizon service (or non-service) and get the iPhone but my pump just sprung a leak. I was prepared for somewhat of a price hike over what they had previously, but this is quite a shock.

Also, i was prepared to buy 3 phones, but the fine print at ATT (Get iReady) says you can only get one phone for each person in line.

Oh I misread your post. If you plan on keeping your current iphone and want only 1 new iphone then yes you would continue to pay the old price for yours and 69.99 for the new plan + the text plan.

An alternative would be to go with the 89.99 family talk plan and add on the $20 iphone plan and $35 iphone 3G/text plan for a total of $144.99 for 1400 shared minutes.

I fear once I try to do anything that involves my current phone I lose the $20 plan add on and it becomes the $35 add on.

ATT sucks. Ok. I said it.

Current iPhone-ers are OK

Like everyone else, I was freaking out. Then I signed in to AT&T's site and noticed that I was eligible for an upgrade. My assumption is that current iPhone customers already paid FULL PRICE for the 1st gen, therefore you are immediately available for an upgrade. Congrats!
