Because 30 dollars data plus 9.99 line fee equals 39.99??

Honestly, yes the plans are more expensive, but geez it isn't that much different than the first iPhone where you had to pay 29.99 for each iPhone past the first two. Note at the bottom it says the next 3 iphone are 39.99 each, and you can have 5 lines per account simple math dictates that they assume you are getting two iPhones.

I think you guys are missing the point ... that extra $30 for a family plan is NOT FOR THE DATA PLAN. Read the fine print, it's for TEXT MESSAGING. Data is now part of the overall plan. The overall price of this plan is double ... I'm going to go from a $100 family plan to a $200 family plan under this pricing scheme when you add it all up. And for all of you who say "no, you just add the data plan" there's no data plan to add, that's a text messaging plan.

"iPhone 3G will be available for $199 for the 8GB model and $299 for the 16GB model. These prices require two-year contracts and are available to the following customers:

iPhone customers who purchased before July 11
Customers activating a new line with AT&T
Current AT&T customers who are eligible, at the time of purchase, for an upgrade discount

Existing AT&T customers who are not currently eligible for an upgrade discount can purchase iPhone 3G for $399 for the 8GB model or $499 for the 16GB model. Both options require a new two-year service agreement. In the future, AT&T will offer a no-contract-required option for $599 (8GB) or $699 (16GB)."

I swear they must have jacked up the rates.

I have the 700min family talk plan with 2 lines, and my current bill is $120/mo. That includes the $70/mo for the voice + 2nd line, $30 for my current iPhone/1500txt plan, and $20/mo for unlimited txts for my sister.

Now it looks like my bill will be $160! $129 + $30 unl txts.

Hopefully someone will point out where I'm wrong, but I really dont want to see my bill go up that much...

$15 more than I'm paying now....?????

Have the basic 450 rollover plan with $20 data plan added when I bought the iPhone last year. Looks like the bata/rollover plans have been combined for $69.99 and $5 if you want sms (200).

Not sure if 3g is worth the extra 15 bucks and an 18 dollar upgrade fee???

maybe next year when warranty is expired, then they might have 4G!

I'm confused, if I don't want ot pay extra can't I just go into Apple pay 199 for the 3G then just go to ATT and upgrade? It says early upgrade fee is 18. Id rather pay the 18 dollars more than 200 dollars more?

Seriously. I pay the "Family Talk" price point on that release already for 700 minutes, 1500 text messages, my iphone data plan and another PHONE on the familytalk plan! Sorry, AT&T, I was on the fence to upgrade my current iPhone... you pushed me off of it. Way to raise prices across the board.

Also Apple, you've let me down too. I can't believe you've let this criminal (yes, warrentless wiretaps outside of FISA courts are criminal) company SCREW WITH YOUR USERBASE. If this is how iPhone is going to be, I don't think I want to get subsequent versions of it.

well I am not sure that the price is any different than the refular pricing

700 minute Family Talk = 69.99
These prices include two iPhones on the plan and thier data packages - 60.00

Total = $129.99

Where is this voice data price increase (beside the 10 for data we already knew about and SMS)? All the quoted prices already have data and voice included and the family talk plan is quoted with two iPhones, and I am sure that you can only have one on there if you want....

I would think no commitment means there is no commitment.... in other words you pay for it and walk out, no activation.

Nope. Directly from the AT&T Account Services Page (With some privacy edits):

This line is eligible for equipment discount pricing when you sign up for a 2-year service agreement. You can take advantage of our no-commitment pricing option, with the exception of iPhone which requires a 2-year commitment.

iPhone with 'no commitment' will still require you to sign a 2 year contract, but since you're not eligible for a discount, they'll just take your money and pocket it. Biggest scam in wireless in the US (I wouldn't say world after checking out the rest of the globe's ridiculous iPhone plans). This is what happens when you get the little Bells back together again (anyone remember back when they were broken up?).

I'm currently on a Family plan with 1400 minutes for $89 + $9.99 to add a second line and $19.99 for unlimited data and 200 txt msgs (on one line) = about $120 total per month.

According to this, I'll now have to pay $149.99 per month for the same minutes, no txt msgs but get 3G data on both phones. I don't live in an area covered by 3G (but travel a fair amount for work to areas that are covered).

I'm sorry, but $30 more per month and losing the Txt msgs is a bunch of crap.

Why can't I keep my current minutes plan (albeit extended for another 24 months) and just add a data plan that covers the 3G usage for a bit more $$?

I thought this was only going to cost a little bit more, not $720 MORE over the 2 years.

I am on the exact same plan as you. I think it (the $149 price) is off because I believe (correct me if I am wrong) that the $149.99 would be for 2 iphones and not one iphone and one non-iphone like you and I have.

No Corporate Discount !!!

AWESOME! I love the prices!

$85 a month - 20% corp discount = great deal

unfortunately, i'll have to pay $399 for the phone.

i'm happy with the cost; not happy with the phone "upgrade" specs though.

I just got off the phone with AT&T about a billing issue on my Treo... The woman cleared that up easily.

When she asked if there was anything else she could help me with, I asked her about the iPhone...

1. Am I eligible for an iPhone upgrade? ...yes I am:)
2. Can I keep my current plan? .... Yes, but you have to add a DATA plan to your current plan.
3. I currently receive a corporate discount (24%), will that continue? ...She asked me to hold on while she checks.....tic toc.... 3 minutes go by... she comes back to tell me that the corporate discounts WILL NOT be honored with the iPhone.

That SUCKS big time. I love Apple and have been an AT&T Customer for 15+ years (Cellular One, Cingular, and now AT&T)... but the long and short of it is that it WILL cost you more to have the iPhone ... and they will be nickel & dime-ing us to death 'til the end.

Still excited about getting the iPhone.:D

"they will also be offering an early upgrade plan for current AT&T customers that aren't upgrade eligible for $399 (8GB black) and $499 (16GB black/white)"

sorry but i guess i am a little slow today.

i am a current iPhone owner and AT&T subscriber. I logged into my account (as someone else here suggested) and went to "Upgrade Phone". There i have a link to "Upgrade Today" but every time i click on that link, i get an error so I don't know what it says.

does this mean i can upgrade to the 3G iPhone?

and what makes you upgrade ineligible if you are currently an AT&T customer?

See this screenshot: http://images.macrumors.com/article/2008/07/01/104157-upgrade.jpg

What makes you ineligible if you are a current Non-iPhone AT&T customer is this. And I won't sugar coat it so people will understand:

- You accepted a $100-$200 subsidy on your current phone from AT&T. ie. AT&T gave you up to $200 so you would sign a 2 year contract with them.
- You voluntarily signed a 2 year contract, knowing that if you wanted to buy a new subsidized phone before 2 years was up, you would have to pay $175.

Those are the people who fall under the "inelgiible" to buy a subsidized iPhone price. Those people can still buy an iPhone 3G but have to pay $200 more to cover their previous subsidy.

I am sorry, I am just not following you. Where is this fine print you are talking about?

AT&T's Family Plan pricing always includes 2 lines, and in the iPhones case they assume two iPhones. Each additional 3G iPhone is 39.99 just like each additional 2G iPhone is 29.99.

well I am not sure that the price is any different than the refular pricing

700 minute Family Talk = 69.99
These prices include two iPhones on the plan and thier data packages - 60.00

Total = $129.99

Where is this voice data price increase (beside the 10 for data we already knew about and SMS)? All the quoted prices already have data and voice included and the family talk plan is quoted with two iPhones, and I am sure that you can only have one on there if you want....

What happens if you don't have 2 iPhones? My fiancee and I have one iPhone and another Samsung phone... will I still be paying a $30.00 data charge for 3G on her phone? The graphic of the FamilyTalk plan says "2 lines" not "2 iPhones".

Yes. Steve made this very clear at the announcement. With the iPhone now Exchange compatible they are specifically targeting corporate accounts. There was not corp discount on the 2G iPhone because it was considered a "consumer" phone exclusively.

Great news Chupa Chupa!! Thanks!

Corporate/Govt Discount

AWESOME! I love the prices!

$85 a month - 20% corp discount = great deal

unfortunately, i'll have to pay $399 for the phone.

i'm happy with the cost; not happy with the phone "upgrade" specs though.

Will you be able to get the corporate/govt discount at activation, or you'd have to call in after activation

So if my family is not getting iPhone 3G's but me and we are all on the family plan, what are the prices to add an iPhone on the plan? I remember seeing this on the last prices of the original iPhone, but not on this one.

ouch...

I currently have the base family plan, I have an iPhone and my wife has a RAZR. For me to upgrade, my plan will go up $60/month if I want to keep text messages...

I'm pretty sure that's not going to happen.

If I could just get 200 text messages on my phone only for $5, that would make it a little bit better...

How do you check if you are eligible for an upgrade?

Log in to your ATT acct. online. But I can save you some time. ALL 2G iPhones are eligible for upgrade pricing since they were not subsidized. ATT has said this many times in the past month.

Cheaper to cancel and pay 175 than 399/499!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you're an existing ATT customer who is not eligible for upgrade, wouldn't it be cheaper to cancel you contract for 175 (or less, actually it would be only 90 or so for me) and pay the 199/299?

So Cancel and Sign a new contract: 199+175=374 or 299+175=474

that's cheaper than 399/499
