My experience is a bit different from those in this thread.. (SS as of 9:55 PM MDT 6/19)
Firstly, I ordered about 45 seconds after AT&T Premier came online with the iPhone pre-order, I'd estimate around 1:25 AM MDT.
By 1:51 AM MDT I'd received my confirmation code from AT&T Premier. When I checked on the site the order was received, about 3 hours later it changed to processing.
Confirmation simply read:
Thank you for your purchase from the AT&T Premier Online Store. We're pleased with your choice of AT&T as your wireless service provider.
Pre-orders will be fulfilled beginning June 24, 2010. Orders will ship on a first-come, first-served basis. We will notify you by email when your order ships. Note: Do not attempt to active your device until you have received it.

Reference Web Order Number: [number here]
It's a bit different then the other confirmations that came later in the day..
Checking on the normal AT&T order page, my order number starts with 4472-**********. At first the items were not backordered. My order date still shows 6/15 (unlike many here who show 6/16) on both the premier status and normal AT&T status page.
I do have various SIM listed.
In a bit different boat, but I was one of the first to order and my confirmation e-mail came (almost) right away in comparison to a lot of them.. I am back ordered though. From what I've read, it almost seems as if being back ordered is a good thing, because mine progressed from not being backordered to back ordered in the same day.. Also not new service either, but that's been discussed ad nausem.
Calling AT&T Premier gives me a very different message then most, as well. "The items you have ordered are on back order and will be shipped as soon as they are ready, keep checking back" blah blah blah
