I ordered a 16gb on 7/24 via AT&T Premier website. They have already put a hold on the funds in my bank account, yet I'm still on backorder? From what I've been reading here, people are saying that their funds are put on hold only once off backorder. Should I be optimistic?

my order was placed 7/10. i checked the status a few minutes ago and it was delivered to the att store, where i'm going to pick it up at. no phone call or email yet, but the strange thing was that before it said delivered it showed that my phone had been shipping throughout the weekend in order to get here. thought that was interesting. I didn't know they did that!
Not sure, but according to previous posts, it looks like 2 day shipping. I am no longer on back order also. My order date was 7/13 too. I expect we'll get shipping info this evening. FINALLY!!!
well this is awesome news thats been a long time coming... im off work tomorrow and wednesday so ill get to be here when it comes, hopefully it does ship today, they have charged me already as well, i just hope it ships today and not tomorrow but it should since its not even 2PM EST time yet and Im in Atlanta
A hold is placed on your account when the order is placed. However, the actual charges aren't applied until your order ships. From the trend, it seems like the backorder is about 10 business days for 16gb, so you probably won't see your phone for a while.
According to a post earlier in this thread, the hold disappears after a few days and then the actual charge gets applied when you're about to ship. My authorization charge from 7/23 is still listed in my account details, but I'm still on backorder.
16 GB ordered at ATT store in Denver on 7/12. Came off of backorder this past Friday. Shipped seconds ago. FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yeah thats the first authorization charge but the second time is when they actually ship it out, your still on backorder and probably will be for a while and the charge will come off and then when your phone ships it will charge your account, i had the same thing happend the first authorization charge for about 72 hours and now the charge for when i come off backorder

Most of what I have seen mention charges to the account - that would be for a credit card.
I think debit cards may act a bit differeently.

I've got very little debt...and just came through a divorce. I'm trying to avoid using credit cards right now. Had no choice really but to use my debit card.
yeah debit is ideal for someone like me who isnt going to charge what they can't pay for, being im a college student. Yes it is normal for them to put the hold on your account and then withdraw the hold prior to actually charging. It happened to me and i called about it
After waiting and waiting for the release of the white iPhone 4 (and it's subsequent delay, again), I decided to give up and just order the black off AT&T. I placed the order this morning, so I really do not expect to get it for another 2-3 weeks. I received an email confirmation a few minutes later confirming my order. My debit card has already been charged, but I presume that is hold that is placed on my account. However, as long as I receive the phone prior to me leaving for FL (Aug. 21st) I'll be fine.

Reason why I ask is my friend is rather unreliable and I'm worried when the charges are attempted to be added there won't be any funds in his account. We had a bit of a falling out since he paid for the phone and he purchased it with a school debit card which is the same thing as a basic debit card it's just with money he got back from college in the form of grants/loans and stuff.
Do they place any type of hold on the money that was used to purchase the phone the moment you pay for it in the AT&T store? So that money can't be touched or is it free for him to withdraw from the account?
If anyone could help me make sense of this i'd be grateful.

From my own experience, I checked my checking account a few minutes after I placed the order with AT&T. My account was charged for a little over $200. I presume that is a preliminary hold on my account. AT&T even states when ordering the phone that your card will not be charged until the phone ships, but to make sure sufficient funds are in your account or your order will be cancelled. However, with I presume the majority of us in this thread, we have seen preliminary holds placed on our accounts after we placed the order. I don't know if the rules are different between using a credit card and a debit card. I am just using my experience with me using my debit card to place the order.
Reminds me of the Uncle Buck movie when the wife asks Buck if he needs any money....He states no as long as he can write a third party out of state check... she shakes her head and writes him a check... you need this guy to give you the cash money he owes you instead of ordering an iphone....
7/13 off backorder here waiting on shipping info. I think the 7/12 and 13 are coming off today and tomorrow.
I was wondering if anyone knows how long it takes att to email you/call you saying you can pick up your phone after its been delivered? It showed that mine had been delivered several hours ago, yet still no email, and im getting impatient!
Why don't you call them? They may not have gotten to you yet/may be under staffed/may just be busy.
