Cool!!! So they are processing these babies as we speak!!! Glad I'm on vacation...won't be getting any sleep tonight! You guys mostly placed your orders early, I didn't recover from my hangover until 830am PST.😎
Placed my order on the eve of 7th and Premier site shows as such however the ATT.com site says the order was placed on the 9th.
No email, still backordered and probably screwed by ATT.

My Customer Service Summary - CSS Email arrived this morning, which means my AT&T contract has started. If you don't have a CSS Email, you could also look it up on OLAM to see if you have a new contract that started recently.
In my case, my new contract is dated 10/08/2011.

lol~ Looks like we got a CNET editor on the same boat as all of us do. Let's hope that we've all made the right choice by going to at&t. Still 2.5 more days before we can trash the hell out of at&t's customer satisfaction mail system.

I received my confirmation email immediately following the order.
For the past few days my order status has not changed. It has been processing > backordered > pending shipment.
I saw that other were chatting online with customer service reps so I did the same. Twice actually. The first was this afternoon. Here is the chat log.

you: Recently placed an order for the 4s. The email confirmation stated delivery on October 14th. But my online status says backordered. Is my phone still on track or....?
Stanley Anderson: Your order is currently backordered. Your order will be shipped within 14-21 days of the order date.
you: I was told that other people are saying that if the order was placed before 5:30pm on friday that the order would be received on time? That was from multiple customer service reps. My order was placed at 9:45 am. Is this information not accurate?
Stanley Anderson: That is correct. Backordered normally means that there is not sufficient inventory to satisfy an order. However, since the iPhone 4S is not set to release until October 14, 2011 all pre-orders will show as backordered. There is no stock officially showing in the system until that date. We are advising 14-21 days for all orders, as it is still possible that your order is truly backorded.

Rhonda Rowser: Also before ordering you need to ensure the billing/shipping/credit card address information are all the same. If the address information is not the same the order will not process. On the checkout page you will have the option to change the billing address on your My At&t account or visit an AT&T store. If you have a PO Box address you can preorder the I phone 4s by calling customer care.
Rhonda Rowser: Just a friendly reminder you can always manage your account at att.com/mywireless.

Just happened for me too. Looks like the status changed for several people late tonight.
interesting note
I was tracking my order for my iPhone at an att store today, in the store system they could see all previous orders placed for your specific number. We looked up my current order for my iPhone 4S which i placed friday morning the 7th at about 930 am and received my confirmation number around 11 am. it says 1 item ready to ship but still processing. I also checked my pre order for last year which didn't go in until the 16th(technically the 15th but it was after midnight when they were being processed in the store because att system went down last year). that phone i was never expecting to receive on launch due to that fact, and it actually shipped on the 23th overnight shipping and was delivered around 10am friday morning. Moral of the story you guys could receive tracking info thursday and still get your phone on launch day. i remember after an hour of pre orders last year att notified all pre orders placed after then would take 7 days after launch.

I pre-ordered a white 16GB iPhone 4S on Sunday 10/9 and my credit card immediately showed a pre-authorization charge of $199. I got the confirmation email and everything from Premier and the status shows as Pre-order on the premier site. The email I received from Premier stated that I would receive my phone in 21-28 days..BS.
On AT&T's order status page I can search for my order by entering my Mom's phone number (I used her line to upgrade) and it lists the phone as back ordered. I then went to UPS and tracked by reference and I entered all kinds of different phone numbers to track by and to no avail. I then entered my phone number just as a wild guess and my order shows as shipped!!! It is in China on the way to the US!
This is very similar to last years dilemma with my iPhone 4 and it arrived early and AT&T's status page showed back ordered up to the day it was delivered.
I think everyone will get their phone on time as long as it was pre-ordered.

Yep, my backordered count vanished on the status page that shows number backordered now as well. The order status page from logging into my at&t account also has gone from backordered to processing now so they're definitely moving still. Not as fast as we all would like though. 😉
Att website 5am est on 7th - Just changed Backordered to 0.
Never received terms email but received order email.
Called and confirmed that terms were accepted on the 10th.
Credit card on weekend was on hold. Currently not on hold.

Boo, all you people that ordered after me and your backorder status is going to zero and mine is remaining at 1. Sucks. I ordered the 32gb white iP4S. *sigh* Glad I'm taking a day trip to the beach tomorrow so I can take a break from thinking about this phone! I haven't been this anxious since I was a kid.
what do you mean? You entered a phone number as a guess for a UPS tracking number?

It is good news as any orders placed on the weekend do not get entered until Monday as per AT&T.
For those of you freaking out about your credit card authorization not completely processed -- don't forget that Monday was Columbus day and did not count as a business day. It typically takes 3 business days for those to process. Could be tomorrow or even Thursday before they process.
ordered mine 5:30 PM PST at an ATT store, still showing as backordered....when I log into ATT it can't find my order under My Orders but order status works, just showing backordered, grrrr. got a Black 32g btw
