When I go through AT&T's online process to "Pay to Upgrade", the final step has language that says I must return my current phone within 10 days. I didn't proceed with the upgrade payment because it's unclear if this meant I had 10 days from today, which would be undesirable because I'd be without a phone until the 25th at the earliest.

Can anyone who's gone through the online "Pay to Upgrade" process explain this?

So to be so full of questions. The Pay to Upgrade payment that I just made was for my wife's line (on my account) and I was planning to upgrade her iPhone 6 by pre-ordering a new iPhone 6S+, giving her my current iPhone 6+ and switching SIMs when the new phone arrives. In essence I want the new 6S+ for myself. Will this work or should I go on AT&T and switch her upgrade eligibility to my line and not play the SIM switch game? I just don't want to do anything to screw up pre-ordering tonight.

It's 10 days from the day you receive the phone. No need to worry about it.

That would work. Or you can just select to use her upgrade tonight. You can use the upgrade from another line on your own line.

I think you would be better off trying to pay the Pay to Upgrade amount through an AT&T rep or in store.

I've paid to own my 6Plus.

I've been through the online ATT site and I do believe you can do the eligibility switch for the preorder on the ATT website when preorders go online. Obviously, CHAT with or CALL them to verify. Then verify it again with another agent.

Thanks! I think to keep things simple I'll do the SIM switch dance when the 6S+ arrives.

Are the folks here who have now secured upgrade eligibility planning to pre-order using Next tonight via Apple's site (or app) or AT&T's site?

I'm going for the Apple Store app. I'll have my account on AT&T open on my laptop just in case I run into a problem with the Apple app, though.

I'm going to use the Apple Store app. I've done a test run and it seems like it's a breeze (granted the server will be slammed tonight)

Never used it so I hope it goes easy. I'll have my browser on AT&T and logged into my account just in case.

If memory serves, in previous years iPhone pre-ordering for S models hasn't been as hectic or problematic. Hope that holds true tonight.

Does anyone here know how I can tell if Express Checkout is enabled on my Apple.com account? I can see my credit card and shipping info but nowhere does it say I have Express Checkout enabled.

I will have all 3 open at the same time... App on the iPad, AT&T and Apple.com on my MacBook.

You only lose the $25 discount if you do the old-school 2-year contract and take a phone subsidy. As long as you stay on the NEXT plan, I'm pretty sure you don't lose the discount.

Do you still get the discount if you are on the Next plan with unlimited data and not mobile share plan?

will i be able to upgrade? mine says "This line may be eligible for an upgrade after 0 more installment payments. you must trade in your current att next device etc...

No - the $25 discount only applies to the newer Mobile share plans. The AT&T unlimited data plan (which I had for many years) was one of the old subsidized plans.
