Seriously? One of the main points of this article is that you no longer need to have any other AT&T services in order to get the "Unlimited" plan.

Yeah, I keep hoping they'll bring that double data promo back again for a period of time, but I'm not holding my breath. Last year, an AT&T retentions agent put my family on a 3 GB plan with 3 GB of bonus data for the cost of a 3 GB plan. So, a retentions agent is probably your best shot at getting the deal at the moment (assuming they still have that in their bag of tricks).

Ya retentions is great. I yell at Cox regularly LOL...The ATT plan I have is fair for what we get. Its simple use wifi occasionally at home and work, pre download some content like podcasts. Small changes make a huge difference in amount of data used.

How does this work? Is it 15GB per device -- total of 60GB? You said you usually have 19 left over.

It is the old plan that you get to use if you don't buy your phones from AT&T. You get 15 GB total for you and your family to share with rollover data. Like the OP I never come close, so I usually get between 10 and 12 GB extra per month.

Afraid so, at least for me.

As you put it, again this topic? How does some European country compare to US in terms of size for example?
so following your line of thought in a state that is smaller than my country it is supposed to be cheaper? Than take a look at asian countries that are dispersed over many islands and are able to offer even cheaper prices. I know that you like to think that but size is not the most important factor.

I"m getting the 25gb with rollover it's technically more data since the "unlimited" plan caps at 22gb and I found out when I called them I can't use my netgear unitepro hotspot on the unlimited plan so 25 w/ rollover here I come

Remind me again what you pay for gas? And taxes?
my gas tax goes pays for many different things as well as my income tax but no more than 0 tax goes to private companies offering telecommunication services. Also, infrastructure is NOT state owned so it has nothing to do with taxes. It's just strong competition between them and strong anti monopoly laws.

OK. So I'm a little hesitant to post this, but what the heck.

First, some useless back-story... There are four of us with phones - my wife and our two kids (high school age). They've both had instances where they have turned off their Wifi at school and then later went home and streamed YouTube, used FaceTime, etc., killing our 20GB shared value plan (which is $15 for each additional 1GB overage). It happened again this month. Half way through the month, we had less than 2GB's left.

I started the process to switch to Verizon on Wednesday afternoon. Called AT&T on Thursday to make sure two of the phones were unlocked and could be switched. I also had to finish off payments for my son. When I called AT&T for that, they transferred me to the service termination department. The fellow there told me about this new unlimited plan. He said it was the same cost as Verizon - $180. We chatted about it for a bit and I asked him if it included 10GB's of tethering. His response was "not yet." I did not know that AT&T didn't allow tethering. I am disappointed with his response as it was limited to saying that they don't yet have a separate allowance, like Verizon, for tethering. He certainly didn't tell me no tethering at all. Fortunately, he gave me his email address as I told him that I might still switch to Verizon if I get hit with cancellation/restocking fees from them. He switched us to the AT&T unlimited plan.

I canceled the switch to Verizon. Then I read there is no tethering and I also read that the $180 price kicks in after the second month. For the first two months, the price is $220.

He and I traded emails late yesterday afternoon. He assured me that the price is $180, starting with the first month. He said that if it doesn't, he'll issue me a credit. I checked the MyATT app this morning and it shows $220 per month. I just sent him an email.

However, tethering is working for me. I have my iPhone's wifi turned off. I have my iPad's wifi turned off. I connected my iPad to my iPhone via bluetooth and my iPad is connected to the internet.

TL;DR: I have the new AT&T Unlimited Plan and my iPad is tethered to my iPhone and it's working fine. I better not get screwed for $80.

Best deal on ATT is 15GB Family plan with FAN discount ($100+15+15+15+15) we never use all 15GB and usually have about 19GB with rollover. 18% off with FAN. this of course is it when you BYOD to avoid that stupid $40 charge per line. Works with NEXT too.

About $140 /4 = $35.20 per line teathering/hotspot and ATT wifi hotspots included.

$220 is crazy expensive, especially if it does not have tethering as well.

So many people could do exactly this. We switched to this plan two years ago and have saved way over a $1000. Love the hot spot. Never, ever, ever needed the damn unlimited we were paying for. We only get 10% the base, but still a great plan even without that.

No one said it's the most important factor. Simply providing a single example of just one difference that plays a role (not that a comparison of small islanding contries somewhere somehow demonstrates something about much bigger areas that are the width of a continent with different population densities in different locations). Simply saying we get more for less of something doesn't really mean anything one way or another. Far more to it all than just something simplistic like that. Tons of things are different among different countries for all kinds of reasons and have been so for ages. To somehow imply that it's strange or shocking or weird or anything or the sort is rather silly.

All it shows is that things are different in different places and have been so for ages(and not necessarily for just one or two reasons that you mention). Nothing new or surprising or strange about any of it.

Exactly. This new "unlimited" plan is really just +7GB over the existing family plan that has rollover. And you pay +$60 (later +$20) for that extra data and lose tethering/hotspot. Unless you always use >15GB month and don't tether/hotspot, this isn't a good plan.

I have a feeling if you reboot your iPhone, Personal Hotspot will no longer be able to be turned on in Settings. Other people on the "old" unlimited plan mentioned that once they rebooted their iPhone after switching to the plan, when they tried to enable Personal Hotspot on their iPhone, it told them to contact AT&T.

I just moved to the Unlimited plan on the app on my phone. The app said it requires for me to signup for DirecTV or U-Verse service within like 60 days. I then got a text message from AT&T acknowledging the change. The text had the sentence "Remember TV service is not required for this plan".

I was on the 5GB/month plan, and I think that was $80. This plan is $100. With my work discount, it is $88 and I'm sure fees and taxes will jack it back up around $100.

I tried T-Mobile recently, but the data service was crap at work. Got like 56K speeds. Really wish I could go back to them and save some money, and get 10GB tethering.

Ugh! I haven't rebooted my phone.

Well, the other "bonus" with the unlimited plan is the ability to use your phone in Canada and Mexico the way you do in the U.S. without incurring any roaming charges. That would be beneficial to some. The question is, what's more valuable to you -- the hotspot or the North American roaming being included? It's unfortunate that AT&T is making the customer choose between those two options.

It's also unfortunate that the retentions department doesn't seem to be able to add the old "Canada Roaming Bonus" to plans anymore. Granted, that was different than the Roam North America feature that's on the unlimited plan, but it's still much, much better than going to Canada with an AT&T SIM in the phone and paying their standard extortionist rates for voice, text, and data. I added the Canada and Mexico Roaming Bonuses for my wife and me last year; but when I called retentions to get the Canada Roaming Bonus added to my mom's account a few months ago, the agent said that feature was no longer being offered.

Well Tmob's $70 is not unreasonable with all that is included. And VZW is the same price as my ATT grandfathered unlimited BUT it includes tethering. So even if TMob and VZW are not cheap they at least are trying. ATT seems to have a big old middle finger fully extended to single line customers.

Happily off to TMob tomorrow.

For a single line wanting unlimited, T-mobile's Metro PCS options look pretty good.

What I dont understand is why a tablet costs $40 just like a phone line? I guess it really is all about data these days and talk/text don't really mean anything.

I just switched my AT&T plan over to the new unlimited plan. Going from 30gb (15gb plan with 15gb bonus) w/ rollover for 4 lines to unlimited and saving about $22 per month. No tethering which isnt much of an issue for me.
