An ATT rep told me that I could not have the family unlimited text with a plan of 550 min. Is that not true?
i just tried to switch online and it said i would have to remove family unlimited text. so i stopped the process.

Out of curiosity what is it that you do all day to reach 50GB? I use 10 on average and I thought I used my phone more than the average user..
Same with me, tried it online and said it conflicted with Family Unlimited Texting,i just tried to switch online and it said i would have to remove family unlimited text. so i stopped the process.
yeap, we can thank the FTC for this, if it wasn't for their efforts AT&T would still charge by the MB lol.I can hardly believe after all these years the throttling limit increased from 5GB to 22GB. And AT&T actually explains the throttling (slow speed and increased latency) happens only on congested towers and can vary by the second. I always go over 5GB but never over 20GB, so for me unlimited is finally actually unlimited.
AT&T is really trying to avoid paying that big FTC fine and at the same time screw over people that finally ditched their unlimited plan to pre-order the iPhone 6s somewhere else.
Now if we can only get tethering...

so I'm wondering if I lost that if it would go to a text plan with a certain number of texts per month?
Most likely you currently have the legacy family unlimited messaging that included unlimited calls to any mobile number. This messaging plan no longer exists. You'll be forced to drop it when you downgrade your Talk plan but you can just re-add the normal family unlimited messaging plan afterwards.
You can confirm this is what you have currently by clicking "add or change services" > "data & texting" > "texting". You'll see your current plan for $30 and then a second plan that also is $30. Your plan will no longer be available after downgrading but the other one will still be there as an option afterwards. It's moot because you won't need the unlimited calls to any mobile number since you'll have unlimited anytime minutes.
Then when all is settled you can call retention and request they change you to a $20 family unlimited messaging plan to save an additional $10. I wouldn't do this until AFTER you downgrade your talk plan because it might drop off during the downgrade as it's not a standard plan you can normally select.
I think I get it, it'll be what I see as the "Family Unlimited Messaging" instead of what I have which is "Family Unlimited Messaging with Mobile to any Mobile". If I switch to the 550 plan and to the other messaging plan, I'll probably have to pay the month in advance on my next bill for those two separate things right? I ask because I intend to upgrade to the 6s on a new 2yr, and I know they sometimes add a month advance or other charges on the first bill, so I don't want a tremendous bill.

thanks! what does it mean to call retention?
Call customer service and select the option to cancel. You'll be routed to the retention department that has the ability to offer things that regular customer service can't give you. Pretty much it's the only department you should ever deal with if you have a customer service billing concern if you don't want to bang your head against the wall.
550 vs 700i just tried to switch online and it said i would have to remove family unlimited text. so i stopped the process.
550 vs 700
1. 550 has max 3 lines vs 700 maximum 5 lines
2. On 550 you cannot have unlimited messaging for 20. I know some guys able to get it
I want to have the ability to have 5 lines, so I stopped on 700, even if you call retention they cannot add 4th or 5th line on 550 plan.

Well, now I regret giving up my unlimited data.
Yeah, I mean at the time I was getting throttled like a week into my billing cycle, and the new data share was cheaper and allowed me to use that data across all my devices. I just assumed at&t would make things even more difficult to keep the udp, like add more restrictions never would have thought they would actually reduce them.I gave mine up last year because of the 5GB cap.
But I feel like I made the best decision possible with the info I had at the time, so it's all good. Congrats to everyone who stuck it out and held onto their unlimited plans...you've been vindicated!
