With Lightning, it's not possible to reach USB3-speed throughput, let alone 3.1 (10 Gbps). This is why Lightning doesn't support proper (read: uncompressed) 1080p, let alone 4k, video output either.

Of course, it's highly possible they'll have a physical USB-C connector but only with USB2 speeds and won't bother with implementing proper hi-res, uncompressed HDMI video output either.
Lightning does support USB3, but the adaptors to USB type A do not. I forget if it's 3.0 or 3.1.

Android trails in everything that counts. They only lead in trivial things that Android fans attempt to spin to be far more important than they are.
Trivial things that Apple copies year after year after year. Is LTE a trivial thing? How about 5G? OLED? RAM? Multi-unit cameras? I thought one extra camera was the highlight of iPhone 11 and you say it's a trivial thing. Next year Apple is going to add TOF sensor (Samsung phones already have it). Was NFC a trivial thing? How about wireless charging? These features define modern smartphones, they are anything but trivial.

If Apple decided to get rid of the numbering, they could possibly call it iPhone Air
They could, yes :)

I’m not sure I’ve seen that prediction for the SE2; you might win the latest round of that perennial guessing game of “what will the next iPhone be called?”!!

Good luck to you!

As answered by others, which is the common misconception about Lightning and USB, and I dont think anyone is any good at explaining it because after 16 trillion of the same reply people still argue about this same question.

The lightning connector can support USB 3.0 5Gbps, and even 10Gbps, and possibly 20Gbps if Apple choose to with a thicker cable.

The lightning controller, currently being used doesn't support anything more than USB 2.0 ( Apart from one of the iPad Pro ). There are reasons, the controller required for these high speed connection are much more expensive, and they are larger, and hence they are only in iPad and not iPhone.

Indeed, the 5.4” will replace the current 5.8”
So - would a 5,4" without bezels not be around the same physical size as 4,7" with bezels? what i mean to say is will we get a 6-7-8 sized fullscreen phone? that would be kinda great. (still personally going for the large screen next year, but my wife would like more screen on the same size, she has a 7 now..)

You’re batting zero. It’s rumored to be an 8 with an A13. So thicker/heavier than the 6S, no headphone jack, LCD, plenty of top/bottom bezel and TouchID on the home button.

So sad. I really love iOS and used it since I got my first smartphone ever (which actually is the 6S I'm still using lol). Even Google can put a 5.6-inch OLED on a light weight $399 budget phone, I don't know why Apple doesn't...

Is iOS not as resource efficient now as before? There's been some large RAM increases in recent years.

FaceID maybe?
It’s for the camera buffer. iOS starts taking photos even before you touch the shutter button, and the newer iPhones are taking multiple pictures from the multiple lenses.

The 7 Plus and 8 Plus have 3GB RAM for the second camera. Apple wants the base RAM to be 3GB, so the XR with one camera has 3GB, while the XS and newer iPhones has 4GB.

I’m guessing Apple will push more camera features on the 2020 iPhone, thus necessitating the extra RAM. Maybe the iPhone 12 will be able to do deep fusion AND outer farm capture at the same time.

Might be also for AR stuff if Apple decides to put the TOF camera on the iPhone 12.

Is there a technical benefit to doing so? Is there some functionality they cannot provide with lightning but can with USB-C?
Nope.
What people want is actually USB C to lightning cable, which seems to become the standard with the iPhone 11 Pro. USB-C itself is not needed on the iPhone side.

I know this is wishful thinking, but I hope the “iPhone SE2” has a dual lens camera set up.
If it comes with 3GB RAM, it mostly will only have a single camera (like the XR).

It’s a bummer for sure as that might mean Apple is preserving features like night mode for the iPhone 11 and up.

Yup. In fact, if the bezel width were to remain the same as the 11 Pro, the 5.4” will be 1-2mm less wide and 4-5mm less tall than the 6/7/8. (Presumably thicker, however.) And to the extent there’s any bezel shrink, it’ll be even smaller.

With these tweaks (5.8—>5.4” and 6.5—>6.7”) I think Apple will have nailed the Pro and Pro Max sizing: slightly smaller for those coming from 6/6s/7/8, and slightly larger—as in huge :) — for those who like, well, huge displays.

Would you prefer a sub par OLED or a great LCD screen? Apple tends to pick the top components. The LCD screens that Apple uses are one of the best of LCDs out there.

Remember the old MacBook Air with TFT screen? Even then, Apple uses the best TFT screen on the market.

So I wouldn’t judge the component Apple uses against a budget Android device.

I wonder if it’s smart for Apple to release an iPhone 12 with the same new design as the much more expensive iPhone 12 Pro. It will cannibalize sales of the Pro model. The smart move (for Apple) would be to introduce the 11s with the same design as the 11, but with the A14, 4GB RAM, a third camera, 5G and non-Pro Motion OLED. The redesign of the 12 Pro/Pro Max (maybe iPhone 5 influenced) would be the major and most noticeable difference between the two.

They may as well just throw in 8GB RAM to give them room to go wild with the camera.

That’s what I have now, what I want is USB-C on the iPhone side, not just for charging but also so there isn’t a need to carry around duplicate accessories, a lightning and a USB-C SD card reader for example.

Nope. That's just you. Most people wanting USB-c On the iPhone dont actually need it other than joining the bandwagon of whiners.

Whenever anyone says, “trust me” I think “Why should I? Give me one good reason”.

In the past Apple, has been stingy with RAM upgrades. I didn’t expect any different, but if rumor is true and Apple is going from 4 to 6GB RAM when normally the upgrade was only 1GB upgrade incrementally before when they did go up.

As someone currently using an iPhone 8+ and 11” iPad Pro, I will say that the main advantage of usb c is in being able to use the wide array of usb c peripherals and adapters available for laptops.

For example, I was able to use the same usb c dock that came with my work-issued windows laptop on my iPad. There would be no need to carry around lightning versions of those accessories (like the lightning to headphone jack adapter if you are still using wired headphones). Everything can be usb c, which can significantly reduce the number of dongles and cables you need to bring around.

I also bought a flash drive that supports both usb c and usb a ports, though I have only used it once with my iPad to date. Having usb c would allow me to use said flash drive with my iPhone as well. Whether people will actually make use of said functionality is another question altogether though.

While this would also mean I could use my laptop charger with an usb-c iPhone, I am not sure what a 60w charger might do for its battery health in the long run, but the option is there.

It’s really about consolidation at this stage.

If Apple had figured out how to make wireless charging work we would have gone from lightning cables to no charging ports on the phone. As it is most people will be using wireless chargers soon enough and the cable won’t matter.

We have

March -
iPhone SE2
iPad Update

June WWDC -
Macbook Air
Macbook Pro
Mac Pro
New iMac ?

6S was your 1st foray into smartphones?!
Congrats! You chose well, lol. Not a shabby phone, whatsoever.
As far as OLED goes... it’s a supply issue. If every single other cellphone manufacturer out there stopped using OLED tomorrow, that still wouldn’t be enough capacity to serve Apple the sheer volume they need.
Their choices were:
1) build out and invest heavily in a more robust OLED manufacturing industry, just as it’s getting ready to be replaced
2) use the tech sparingly (Apple Watch & only on the $1k+ phones), and invest heavily in microLED... essentially trying to “leapfrog” OLED as much as possible
That being said, my most recent cellphone upgrade path has been from the X to the XR, & now the 11. I consider the latter two to be superior to my X (despite the fact they both have LCD).
I know this post meandered, lol... but my advice is to not hold your breath on an OLED screen for Apple’s cheaper lineup, & also- know that you aren’t missing much! The 11 is an absolutely stellar phone. And the SE2 should have a screen of identical quality.

Making the iPhone 11 Pro Max the iPhone 6 of this generation considering the ram management issues with it.
I don't think so, the iPhone 6 of this generation is the iPhone 8 with the 2GB of RAM, the 11 is going to have limitations, but not that much I guess

Wireless charging doesn’t work? Hmmm, are you sure about that?

Googles display for that cheap OLED phone are horrible, better to have nice lcd than horrible OLED. Plus that battery on google phone I are talking about is also a joke,
