Did you see that Aussie guy do the pole vault? Wow!

Was a ballsy last jump. But even more amazing were the Jamaica in the 4x100m. That 3 golds and 3 world records for Bolt. Do you think he'll ever for get what he was doing for he's 22nd birthday.

nastia may have to go back to beijing to collect two gold medals if it turns out the chinese girl was too young.
Can they carbon date her? Or X-ray her and look for annual rings?

Come to think of it, she's "too young to date". Ha ha.

Seriously, is there any scientific way to accurately judge a human's age?

I doubt we will find out the truth. The FIG are the ones investigating this on the behest of the IOC. If you read any statements by them, they are all to content to accept "government documents" as proof. What good is a document by an unbiased government? They can be (and in my opinion have been) made to say whatever they want.

From here,

Earlier this month, the AP found registration lists previously posted on the Web site of the General Administration of Sport of China that showed both He and Yang were too young to compete. He was born Jan. 1, 1994, according to the 2005, 2006 and 2007 registration lists. Yang was born Aug. 26, 1993, according to the 2004, 2005 and 2006 registration lists. In the 2007 registration list, however, her birthday has changed to Aug. 26, 1992.

The problem is that China will censor their citizens, and the IOC and FIG will be too spineless too pursue it further. They will be all to happy to accept documents from a government who has a history of manipulating the truth.

It's all global politics. I'm sure you can find all sorts of stuff in Google's cache but whether there will be any "court order" to dig this is up in question. I'm sure China want's to keep the national pride and have their citizens in bliss and believe in the future of the government.

And you know what, western government may look the other way. Why? Because a good Chinese economy is produces cheap goods. Think of the computers that are so cheap that they are half the price of the Mac with the same components. If it wasn't for them we would not have all these products we don't even need but just want to have...and also increase our corporations productivity and satisfy the shareholders.

The world is more about economics than it is about "fairness". Wow, what a revelation!

They tried that once with DNA testing but it come up with various ages for different parts of the body. And it also depends on the person and probably environmental factors as well.

from what i've learned in Bio, you can get a pretty good estimate (within half a year or so) from teeth, width of jawbone, width of hip bone (women only), and length femur bone i believe.

now you really think China's going to let some doc do that to those three girls  nah, it's a losing cause.

Replacement parts.:p:eek:

Heh...not yet but soon...though some people get new grown bladders and skin.

I don't remember, but I would guess it goes by measuring telomeres?
Those are "end-caps" of chromosomes that are supposed to shorten every time a cell (hence DNA) divides. The replication machinery "looses" part of the telomere every time so the shorter the telomere is, theoretically the longer the "cell-line" has been around. It is sort of like a "fuse" that ticks away until it disappears and I guess that's when the DNA don't work anymore and the cell line dies. And when enough cells die or start getting messed up, you die. Someone who knows genetics can correct me if I'm wrong since I just remember some rough details.

But maybe like how not all your hair becomes white at once, then not all your cells age at the same speed? Dunno, but I know the test didn't work so there is no known way to measure someone's age.

The BBC have posted some alternative medal tables including Jaffa Cakes proposed scoring system and medals per head of population. I don't think they are updating them live though...

lots of excitement in the Taekwondo. For those who missed it. British fighter Sarah Stevenson made what looked like a fight winning kick to the head of the Chinese fighter but only 2 out of the 4 judges gave it (takes 3 to score a point)
The British team appealed and the result was reversed.

I know bugger all about Taekwondo but how two of the judges missed the kick to the head is beyond me.

Latest now, story is that the Chinese are appealing the result of the appeal.

So sad when things like that happen. Still, I think it's should mean a life time ban from the Olympics and maybe the whole sport.

Doesn't matter how the medals are looked at......Canada's still not there.

EDIT: Regarding taekwondo, the judging has apparently been appallingly bad. It hasn't been noticeably biased....just bad. Really bad. Everyone is frustrated, and taekwondo is being seen by some fans as not being legitimate anymore.

There were also lots of bad calls in the basketball between Argentina vs The Cream Team. Lots of non-calls for blatant fouls, and lots of non-calls. At first I thought there was favouritism towards Argentina, but then bad calls were made in the Dream Team's favour, so the bad calls evened themselves out.

The BBC have posted some alternative medal tables
From the article:
This system counts against countries like France which had enjoyed 32 podium finishes but only a handful of wins. Maybe with this in mind, and half an eye on China, media in the US have been publishing a table of total medals won, regardless of colour, and that puts the US top.
The U.S. sports media doing this for France? I don't think so. They are clearly doing it to make the U.S. results look better than they are. Good news = more excitement = more money.

Since China has gotten awfully close to the U.S. in total medals (coming within 2 the other day), I'll offer this handy tip: Rank countries by the number of silver medals, where the U.S. is clearly superior to all other countries!

I watched one of the boxing finals earlier and the refereeing (and the match) was terrible, the guys were pushing each other around and throwing each other onto the mat, it was really, really strange to watch. It was mainly the Cuban, but it certainly wasn't just him.

Team GB's DeGale said:
It was not that good, but it was strong, I just wanted to win. He was pretending that I was holding on to him - and then he bit me in the first round. He was tough, horrible and strong throughout the bout. But I'm Olympic champion, it's unbelievable.

taekwondo has grabbed all the headlines today.

As far as the Cuban guy. He should have known the rules. The way he jumped up when he realised he'd missed the one minute mark shows he was milking it and taking a breather.

At least they got it right and over turned the judges for the women's +67Kg fight. I really pleased that Sarah Stevenson managed to win a bronze, not sure her mind was right for the semi-final after all the messing around.

And who saw the James DeGale fight, was more like street fighting than a boxing match. He got two points who the Cuban had a go at biting him.

In some countries, he could be arrested and put in jail. Furthermore, having a black belt means you can be charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
