I tried a vent-clip mount on a road trip, my iPhone shut down due to overheating ... I wonder why? /s

I actually just ordered one. I think it's cool if the phone actually hangs on there through the bumps and potholes in Atlanta. I'll report back. If ti can make it through the dang roads here, it should be fine elsewhere LOL.
It obviously will be fine. They wouldn’t be selling it if it falls off easily.

I drive a Jeep Wrangler, the smoothest riding vehicle on the road ;)
My phone would probably be on the floor under my gas pedal before I left the driveway.

Vent mounts of any type are pretty horrible all around.
When you turn on the heat, the phone overheats.
When you turn on the AC, the phone gets way too cold.
The vent fins aren't very sturdy
The attachment clip to grab the vent fins isn't very secure.

I had a vent mount for my iPhone 4S way back then and after a few uses I tossed it on the trash. And the iPhone 4 is tiny

DO NOT BUY THIS!!!!

I had one from a different company and during the winter my phone would shut off due to excess heat.

Basically the hot air from the vent was super-heating my phone to a dangerous level.

BUYER BEWARE. YOU’RE IN FOR A SCARE.
I never use my forward facing vents for heat. It dries out my eyeballs.

I use the vent combo of defroster/floor vents.

I have yet to find a mount that I like, especially with proper cable management. My dash? 2018 Honda Accord. Preferably something that can be moved around quite easily. Maybe from behind the infotainment system on top of the center of my dash one day to the passenger side foot well faced in my direction.

Yaaaa I wouldn’t trust that at all!
I took a magsafe charger and cut off the cord, applied one of the metal pads left over from my magnetic mount to the back of the charger and stuck that to my mount. My naked 12 pro attached to the magsafe mount and so far no issues. My jeep isn't the most comfy ride, but hasn't fallen off yet or even moved.

I cut off the cord since I use carplay and have no used for an extra cord hanging around.

feeling how loose my magsafe charger is attached to my iPhone 12 with a case, im pretty positive it wont survive a bump in a car. We'll see how strong the magnets are, but looking at the support documents of apple, they have a limit, if you want to call it "magsafe"
Your MagSafe Chager isn’t designed to hold an iPhone like this is. There’s nothing stopping these guys putting really strong magnets in there. I dunno about you, but I’ve experienced very powerful magnets before.

The mount can have its own, stronger magnets that align-match the iPhone's... the wallet seems to have more "passive" magnetic attachment and certainly is an epic fail but then again its not like this mount and the wallet have the same counter-magnets so to speak...

Yeah, I don't understand why it doesn't seem to occur to so many people that the accessory can also be magnetic, not only the phone. Having a phone with a built-in magnet strong enough for this type of application would seriously not be a good thing, could you imagine trying to pry it off the charger? It makes far more sense to have a relatively weak built-in magnet which allows for a degree of hold and orientation for charging and cases etc, but to be able to supplement that with accessories with stronger magnets where more force is required.

Check out ProclipUSA.com They create a customized mount for each car model and each phone model. I had one for each of my cars and they fit perfectly. Of course, you have to buy a new mount when you change your car or phone, but it's very solid. Only drawback is that they don't have integrated wireless charging.

That would be my concern. Based on reviews of things like the wallet the magnet on the phone isn't very secure at all.
This FUD needs to be stopped in its place. There is no "THE MAGNET". There are the magnets in the phone, magnets in the cases, magnets in the wallet, magnets in the charger, magnets in all the accessories being made.

The wallet intentionally has "weak" magnets in it so that it is not a pain the iass to use. Some people have decide to label this bad because they think the wallet should be glued to the phone and impossible to remove. Well, they don't get it. And that's fine, they don't have to buy it.

MagSafe accessories can all be as strong or not strong as they need/want to be.
