I used to use vent mount holders for my phone until I discovered they help damage your phone.
During the summer months the A/C blowing cold air, will bring the internal temperatures low enough that the phone will shutdown. Same goes for the winter month when the heat is on. Both of these scenarios helped degrade the battery faster.

There are a few problems with vent mounts in general:

1. The clips staying connected to the vent
2. The vent itself being too loose and the whole thing tilting down due to weight
3. Heat and AC

I say vent mounts are a last resort. Luckily I can use a suction-cup mount on my passenger airbag cover... nice and smooth.

I rarely carry passengers but I will remove the mount when I do for their safety.

It’s 2020 and my new car has no place to put my iPhone. What an epic design fail.

Have to use suction cup mounts on the side walls of the console recess to hold my two iPhone devices for my GIG job.

I suppose I could use the useless touch panel CarPlay screen, that’s a smooth surface.

If I have to use a vent to hold my iPhone and keep it cool that’s a product fail of the phone manufacturer.
Why do you find CarPlay useless? I've got it in my 2019 Ram, and I think it's the greatest thing ever. I don't care where my phone is, because Maps, Overcast (podcasts), Music, etc, show right up on the screen. After using it for about a year, I wouldn't think of betting a car without it.

DO NOT BUY THIS!!!!

I had one from a different company and during the winter my phone would shut off due to excess heat.

Basically the hot air from the vent was super-heating my phone to a dangerous level.

BUYER BEWARE. YOU’RE IN FOR A SCARE.
With the last three vehicles I've owned, if I put climate control in "Auto" mode, it'll direct hot air through the floor vents, and AC through the top vents. So a phone mounted to a vent holder will only get cold air, and never hot air.

If your car doesn't have an Auto mode like this, just do that on your own: when using the heater, direct air through the lower vents, and when using AC, use the upper vents.

Belkin's new Car Vent Mount PRO with MagSafe for iPhone 12 models is now available to order through Apple's online store, with pricing set at $39.95 in the United States. Apple is quoting delivery in the first week of December as of writing.

belkin-car-vent-mount-magsafe-2.jpg

The mount has a built-in clip that attaches to a vent in a vehicle, and MagSafe allows an iPhone 12 model to be magnetically attached with ease. An integrated ball joint allows the iPhone to be flipped from portrait to landscape with one hand. The mount has a slim profile with cable management on the back for storing a Lightning cable, but note that the mount itself does not function as a charging pad.

The Car Vent Mount PRO is not yet available to order through Belkin's own website, and we're still waiting on its BOOST↑CHARGE PRO 3-in-1 Wireless Charger with MagSafe, which is expected to be available in "winter 2020."

Apple's website has a page with all available MagSafe accessories, including its MagSafe Charger and Leather Wallet. Apple says its MagSafe Duo Charger and Leather Sleeve for iPhone 12 models are "coming soon" for $129 each.

MagSafe is a new feature on all iPhone 12 models that allows for magnetic accessories to be attached to the back of the devices.

I have a hard time believing a phone will stay on this mount if the car isn’t driving on glass-smooth asphalt. The magnets ar not strong enough. And it doesn’t have a charger? What’s the point? MagSafe is worthless. Total misuse of the original product name. Steve Jobs would never have let this be put out.

I’m surprised it doesn’t charge. I just assumed it would. also there is no way of knowing how strong the magnets are until people start getting them in their hands.

I have had a magnetic mount for my iPhone for years, have never seen it fall off or even shift on it.
Yep, same with me, no problems using magnetic mounts for years (though, as I mention in another comment, I no longer use a holder for my phone since I've found CarPlay obviates that).

But I'm thinking about getting this, or something similar, for my wife, who does not have CarPlay in her car. Frankly, I'll take my experience using magnetic holders problem free for years than the speculation of naysayers who obviously have not used this product, and apparently never used any magnetic holder. Nonetheless, I'll wait for initial reviews of this product and see what other options come out before I make a purchase.

For those of us looking for a charging mount, this Belkin is a disappointment and non-starter (and I'm waiting for my ESR HaloLock to ship).

But for those plugging in Lightning anyway for CarPlay and looking for a MagSafe mount, I wouldn't discount it based on the videos of the loosely attached wallet. Based on multiple videos, MagSafe looks like it can be a viable/stable car mount (so those who have hypothesized that it depends on the strength of BOTH magnets are likely on to something). Here's one example:

And here's a thread on this topic:

It will be interesting to see if they used stronger magnets than Apple is recommending for MagSafe devices. I agree that the 12’s, especially the Pro Max’s, are likely to not be as secure as you’d want. Especially given how it’s easier to break a magnetic bond using quick impacts against the main magnetic force, which is what gravity and bumps will do in a car.
Not only the phone falling off, but the weight of the iPhone 12 Pro Max might pull the mount off altogether. I had that issue with the XS Max and a car mount I had.

Hmm, typical German car, overweight and undersprung, low profile tires, probably run flats. On American roads. I can’t imagine the phone staying mounted for long.

I thought Apple wasn’t allowing Magsafe for that purpose according to their Magsafe guidelines
If that's the case, the magsafe magnets are only to align a glorified cable with a glorified port. In other words, it's a cable by another name, but which allows them to subvert the spirit of laws that require them to use a USB power cable.

folks the iPhone can’t hold a wallet securely. What makes you think it’s going to hold it’s own weight?!

Unless you are driving your convertible into the front pocket of a giant pair of skinny jeans, I'm not sure how that's a meaningful extrapolation.

Magnets aside, I've never found a good vent-mount solution that holds the Plus and Max phones very well. It seems like it's just a bad idea to put a heavy phone on the end of a stalk cantilevered off a plastic climate control vent.

also cools it in the summer in the az heat. But yea that's pretty obvious. Turn off the vent where the phone is if you have issues. Cant stop hot and cold air from doing what its doing if you put something in front of it.

jellyfish mount on all my larger iPhones and XS max last two years without issues. It locks onto a vent from the back and tightens down onto it. Very secure for me and easy to get in and out.

I've used multiple magnetic mounts before including with the 11 Pro Max. I was able to drive thru a few bumpy situations without an issue. I don't expect this one to have any fallout from shocks. But it would be a lot better if this thing can also charge. And I want the cable to plug into the base so that rotation doesn't move the cable.

Regardless, even if it can't charge, I can simply plug the cable into the phone. Just have to live with the fact that when rotating, the cable will go sideways.
