You still don’t get it do you? The iPhone 10 or X still needs 2 steps to open to the home screen, while the touch ID only needs one step. A number of times I will just press on touch ID on a desk and not pick up the darn phone.
TouchID needs two steps. you need to press your your thumb on the phone and then hold it there then it opens up before you can even look at your notifications. I much prefer to look at notifications then go into home screen if I need to. It was definitely a minor annoyance on my iPhone 6+ and presumably the 7.

The review (had seen this previously) sounded more like a sales pitch than a real review.

FaceID - would have been great of they would show in low/poor light

During work my current 7+ sits on my desk within reach and I frequently use TouchID to unlock and check the phone ... with FaceID you have to pick up, unlock, then swipe. This is also a reason I am not a big fan of TouchID on the back.

Like I have mentioned previously, I will want to try in hand.
Too many questions ...
Actually you don't actually have to pick up the phone. You have to push the button to turn on the phone then let the fingerprint scan. with faceID you will press the side button to turn on the phone while looking at the screen and the phone will be instantaneously unlocked.

With Face ID...On desk, tap to wake. View notifications. Take out of pocket, raise to wake, view notifications. It’s the same. You’ll be good.
Except I don't always want to view my notifications on the lock screen before getting to the home screen... that's what I was saying. I want to have the option to either unlock and be right in the home screen instantly, or not unlock and just view notifications. With TouchID and that Accessibility tweak I have this use option.

So far from what I've read online it doesn't look like Apple is going to give us this same Accessibility option to by-pass the swipe up action after you've authed with FaceID and go directly to the home screen (correct me if wrong, and I hope I'm wrong). With TouchID I get to pick which of my 10 fingers authenticates (and when I want to authenticate) so I can tailor my use accordingly. With FaceID I only have one face and I've lost control over when authentication occurs because it's always going to be scanning my face.

That's the other thing, too. With TouchID I could train it to auth multiple people (spouse, etc). With FaceID that's gone, it's either yourself or a passcode. I don't like giving my passcode out if I don't have to, for security reasons.

Use a dock, problem solved

Assisted Touch ID was just that. There are those (us) that need assistance, thank you. This is essential stuff. My doctor told me not to swipe up (he even made a face)...little fib there ;)

I guess ya can’t please everyone. The X won’t work for you.

Some people will buy this phone no matter what and seems like posting to justify their purchase. Some people do have concerns and thats not a bad thing either.

So a few things that caught my eye as a person ordering the 8+:

1) Screen size isn't as bad, and notch wasn't as annoying. He didn't really show video/websistes/photos though.
2) The chrome on the sides probably feels better than it looks -- looks too cliché from a "futuristic" perspective
3) The finish of the white and chrome also seems a bit too overdone, but it is nice to see they went with a black front.
4) Face ID works well and I think the concerns of its utility over touch ID are overblown.
5) The home swipe seems nice and responsive enough.

That's true, it's not a bad thing to have concerns.....but sometimes there appears to be so many "what if's" thrown into the conversation ("What if I wanted to pull it out of my pocket & have it already be unlocked)

I'm not saying people's concerns don't have merit, they certainly do. However in terms of what we've seen with Face ID, it could add a second (if that) to the swipe up. Yes, it's different.....but it could turn out to be fine.

In real world usage, will it really become a huge inconvenience or just a adjustment of how one users the device.

In terms of Touch ID, we have to remember there were complaints about it, and there were the complaints about second generation being too fast..

Yes, there are plenty of individual / personalized ways that people unlock their phones, but honestly, I think you have to find out what works best for you. (I hardly ever use touch ID on my 7, I uses a passcode).

Hopefully, everyone finds what works for them.:)

Don't you look at your phone to use it? Why is this an extra step?

The phone sits flat on my desk to the right but within glance view and reach. I can either use a TouchID finger to unlock and view or a nonTouchID finger to view the lockscreen.

With FaceID I would need to pickup, look, swipe to view the device screen and have no way to just view the lockscreen.

This is more like extra steps, not "an extra" step.

It should work perfectly in zero light because it has IR emitter. How would they have been able to demo this in a busy demo environment?

Blackout booth with camera running. You would see the screen come awake.

One of the reasons I want to try in hand.
My 7+ sits about 1.5 - 2 feet to my right. I just reach out and either use a registered finger or not to get the screen I want. No pickup. From what I have seen / read, I cannot glance to the side and auto unlock the iX.

So, basically, if you look at your phone, it's unlocked. Then ANYONE can swipe up to get to the home screen.
That's my personal issue with it. TouchID is a deliberate action to unlock your phone. You can't really accidentally rest the correct finger on the home button. You have to intentionally unlock your device with TouchID.

You dont need to hold the phone in front of you for FaceID to work.

Why is 'looking' a step? You arent going to look at your phone to use it?

The showed a picture during the demo of someone activating FaceID while the phone was laying on the edge of a pool.

Give me the scenario where this is a real world concern?

When you’re in the presence of any other human being?

When you’re in the presence of any other human being?

So you are saying this other human being grabs your phone, holds it up to your face, you look at it and unlock it and then they run away?

Yeah, happens to me all the time.

That’s one scenario. It’s already been established that you don’t have to hold the phone to your face to activate FaceID. Just glance at it on a table, unlocked. Lots of unlocking when you don’t actually want to unlock it, just because you happened to look in your phones general direction.
