Except I don't always want to view my notifications on the lock screen before getting to the home screen... that's what I was saying. I want to have the option to either unlock and be right in the home screen instantly, or not unlock and just view notifications. With TouchID and that Accessibility tweak I have this use option.

So far from what I've read online it doesn't look like Apple is going to give us this same Accessibility option to by-pass the swipe up action after you've authed with FaceID and go directly to the home screen (correct me if wrong, and I hope I'm wrong). With TouchID I get to pick which of my 10 fingers authenticates (and when I want to authenticate) so I can tailor my use accordingly. With FaceID I only have one face and I've lost control over when authentication occurs because it's always going to be scanning my face.

That's the other thing, too. With TouchID I could train it to auth multiple people (spouse, etc). With FaceID that's gone, it's either yourself or a passcode. I don't like giving my passcode out if I don't have to, for security reasons.

Why can't you just press the side button to view the lock screen notifications?

1 step or 2 steps unlocking the X is still seamless; I did,nt detect any friction in that video unless you’re trying to access a phone that isn’t yours

You dont need to hold the phone in front of you for FaceID to work.

Why is 'looking' a step? You arent going to look at your phone to use it?

The showed a picture during the demo of someone activating FaceID while the phone was laying on the edge of a pool.

Give me the scenario where this is a real world concern?

That is the thing; mismatching info.
Between what the demos show, the Keynote said, the reviews are saying, etc..., the information imparted does not align.

Check out the image.

The phone is at the lower right. I either tap on the Home button with my Index (to unlock) or Middle finger to view the lock screen. I don't pick it up for this.

Touch and glance.

Now how would I need to mod this if I got an iX? That is the question.

That’s one scenario. It’s already been established that you don’t have to hold the phone to your face to activate FaceID. Just glance at it on a table, unlocked. Lots of unlocking when you don’t actually want to unlock it, just because you happened to look in your phones general direction.

So if you are the type of person that sits their phone down, glances at it often, and in a place where someone then might grab it, and run off......you might want to disable FaceID or get an iPhone 8

Or if you just want to know when you have unlocked your device, by intentionally unlocking it

do you do that often? Randomly check if your phone is locked?

No, but I like knowing that it’s locked until I unlock it by performing an action that is intentional. As opposed to unlocking whenever I happen to look in its general direction.

That’s cool tho, if you’re happy with a device that you can easily unintentionally unlock, that’s up to you.

And you are basing this on exactly 0.0 minutes of actual usage.....right?

Yep, but your the one making claims like its easy to unintentionally unlock.

Based on the hands-on demos, Apple Keynote, and how Apple say it actually works.

And weren’t you the one saying to another poster that you don’t have to hold it up to your face to unlock?

Look, we disagree, that’s cool. You get your X and I’ll get my 8 Plus.

I’m only speculating, but I expect it to only be unlocked for a few seconds before locking again if you unintentionally unlock it with your face.
This is how it works now with TouchID. Try it, press the power button to wake the screen, or raise to wake, then rest your finger on the home button, remove finger then do nothing else. I count five seconds roughly before the screen goes black and it’s locked again.
By the way, you can only unintentionally unlock your phone with FaceID if you have also woken the screen before hand. It won’t just unlock every time you look at the phone while it’s laying on your desk.

Hope this helps.

I don't care if my phone unintentionally unlocks on the desk in front of me. It is still under my control. Also, how lazy have we become that picking up a phone to unlock it is a big issue?

This coming from an iphone and android user (apple for work, samsung for personal).

This face ID thing is such an unknown. THere's are chance that it's just a buggy POS. Probably not, but who knows.

But not instantaneously.

As far as I can tell (and obviously until the reviews come in, none of us have much to go on), the process of swiping up and Face ID unlocking the phone is simultaneous.

If the phone is in your hand but switched off, a tap and swipe isn't going to take any longer than the press and hold needed for Touch ID to recognise what you want to do.
It absolutely factually is far slower than ‘rest to unlock’. There is nothing you can say to change reality. The iPhone X is much slower to get into the home screen from a powered off screen, than is an iPhone with Touch ID. End of story.

Hopefully they implement an option for ‘look to open’

Yes I said that, because that’s what Apple detailed in the keynote.

Most hands on reports have been extremely positive towards FaceID

Well let's be honest, I don't think Apple is going to release a buggy POS security feature that they are calling the future with Face ID. It might need improvements as time proceeds forward, but this company values and releases technology they have complete faith in. That's What makes Apple so great in so many different respects, they have reliable software.
