Hell, I'd suggest a Chromebook. Especially if you're more into Google services, less into the iOS ecosystem (e.g. don't really need iOS App Store), and want a machine that's beast for web surfing and typing. For $200, it's an incredible value!

Just my 2 cents here. I have a google chromebook USB-C version from 2015, and that laptop died itself last month. I had tried everything I can to rescue it, but no way to restore OS. It asked me to contact google for service. didnt have a chance yet. It's shame that I had d high expectation on Google, turned out it's a bad experience. I think it's SSD died down. I only used it twice a month, very light-weight usage. My MacBook Air from 2011 is still working perfectly. It's my main laptop to serve in Sunday school. and I use it every sunday in church and Sat night to prepare the message for kids. Still working solid and fast.

Explain to me the benefits of having more than 256 gb of internal storage?

In what use cases would 256 gb be insufficient? I ask b/c I just bought a base model and may want to swap if I can be convinced

Also, someone above described themselves as a 'content creator'... what is that, exactly? what kind of 'content' do they 'create'
I bought an early 2008 MBP when they were first released with a 200Gb HDD and that drive filled up within a couple of years without me doing any sort of video work. Almost ten years later I would expect a drive that size to fill up rather quickly. I would get at least 1Tb.

It would seem that FaceID will inevitably replace TouchID on MBP. That, 6-core processors and 32GB for those who need it would seem to make a great case for delaying your purchase—if you can wait until mid- or late-2019.
Well what I'm hoping for (might be a pipe dream) is Apple to compile the UI and some native apps (Mail, Messages, Safari, etc.) for ARM so that you get some insane amount of battery life (24+ hours??) if you're just browsing the web or checking e-mail (or watching videos), but still have the power of an i7 there when you need it. Apple did kind of pioneer the whole dedicated/integrated graphics switching based on what app was running, if anyone could do this it would be them.

All of this just brings to light how outrageously overpriced the MacBook Pros are.

Even with $800 off, I still can’t justify the cost.

Not that it matters, but almost all state of the art computers costs about $3000 30 years ago (1985). I know because I bought several of them. Strangely, the MacBook Pro seems to follow this same pricing. Perhaps the next generation is about to appear and this is a close out deal. If so, look for the ALL NEW Macbook Pro to cost around 3K.

Below from an inflation calculator...

What cost $3000 in 1985 would cost $6783.40 in 2016.
Also, if you were to buy exactly the same products in 2016 and 1985,
they would cost you $3000 and $1304.10 respectively.

I have never dealt with B & H, are they that bad?
Unless you're a young fella that only knows Apple Store, Bestbuy and Walmart as a place to buy electronic toys. B&H is known from mostly professional content creators and they're famous store is in NYC. The great thing buying from them if you live out NY and NJ you're not paying tax for those 2 states if you're buying online. One of my regrets when I was in NYC for vacation is that they're closed one day on weekday but I got the chance to visit the Apple Store on 5th Ave. and Grand Central.

A lot of those folks can make do with an iPad.
I need a Mac because I'm a content creator and as such, 1/4TB is not enough.

Why would people still rely on their internal drives is beyond me. Do your work and back it up ASAP to your externals or the cloud. Laptops are not storage machines.

I daren’t buy the recent MacBook Pros due to the dodgy keyboard. I would also never pay the $300 premium for the pointless touch bar. As soon as they release an escape with a reliable keyboard I’m in. If they never do, my iPad/Mac Mini will have to do.
It’s not just the touch bar. It’s a much faster processor, better video card, and double the powered USBC connectors.

Careful with Adorama! They once had a Black Friday deal on speakers, then claimed that an admin did a price mistake and left us all stranded. No thanks

To each his own, of course.

But, the smartest pundits seem to agree the current generation of laptop is a dud in terms of pro needs.

Great post from Marco. I agree with all of this, except Apple should get serious about extending battery life. Microsoft is up to 16 hours, and 10 hours is falling short—to say nothing that most workflows get only about 5-6 hours in real-world Use.

Glad you’re getting money”s worth.

There’s an entire article with hundreds of forum posts about the Marco article. Plenty of disagreement and counterpoint. Be careful of generalizing one person’s pet peeves to a universal condemnation, because plenty of MBP buyers love the newest model.

My main point of disagreement is that the one person’s “pro machine” is useless for another pro.

The 2015 generation is a fine machine. But it doesn’t have Thunderbolt 3 ports. TB3 is 40Gbps and the 15” MacBook Pros have 4 of them. Pros use them in different ways.

Some might plug in an eGPU, maybe a 580, maybe a 1080ti. Maybe a 40Gbps Ethernet adapter. Maybe an external PCIe3.0 enclosure for running a RED Rocket-X or AVID Pro Tools|HDX card. Maybe a 12 slot RAID array. Maybe a TB3 dock with Gb Ethernet, a bunch of USB3.1 Gen2 ports, analog audio in/out, digital audio out, and TB3 pass through ports for a couple 4K monitors.

The new MBP is the best solution for some Pros, others don’t need 4 x 40Gbps ports and would rather have built in ports. Buy what best suits your requirements. But one pundit’s best machine for his purposes may be unusable for another pro’s needs.

I bought this same laptop when it launched in 2016.

It is a great laptop (I love the screen, speakers, keyboard and build quality), but battery is mediocre, the internals are mid-tier and the touchbar is an absurd gimmick.

At $2,899, it was overpriced by about $600 or $700. This laptop should have retailed, in all fairness, in the low $2,000s when new.

Well, I’m not so young a fella. I grew up minutes outside Manhattan and have been in the area my whole life. I’ve been to their store several times over the years, as well as most of the other “big” camera stores in Manhattan and Brooklyn. This was long before Best Buy or even online ordering. I personally always found the experience at any of those stores akin to going to a car dealership. No matter what “deal” they were giving you, you knew you were not really getting any “deal”. As I conceded in a previous post, maybe things have changed. For my part, I’ll continue to pass.

Ah, the ever-present "New Apple" dilemma:

Do you put up with crap hardware (with a lot of money) so you can run the best Desktop OS out there?

Or do you put up with mediocre software but (often far more powerful and flexible) Windows hardware that better fits your (hardware) needs & budget?

Used to be Apple was the top of the food chain in both areas (hw and sw). Today, compromise is required.

For me, the decision is (kinda) done... when my 2011 Macs die, I'm leaving the platform.

I don't see Apple correcting course to fit my needs...they're stuck in a cycle of gimmickry, self-congratulatory masturbation and anorexia, and Steve ain't coming back to pull them out of it. Only a miracle will do so.

All good things must end, indeed.

Apple has rarely been the best solution for those seeking the highest specs for the lowest price. I suppose there are cheaper laptops that offer four 40Gbps Thunderbolt 3 ports.

Apple could get 16 hours of battery life too if they just blatantly lied about it like Microsoft does.

Is it worth upgrading from a 15" Late 2013 rMBP with a 2.0ghz i7, 8 gig of ram and a 256 gig SSD?

Enjoy your laptop, but can those of us who can utilize the four Thunderbolt 3 ports of the 2017 enjoy ours as well?

The MBP is selling very well, and that’s because Apple knows its buyers value small, light and powerful. The 2017 is an amazing machine, despite your anger.

Yeah ..... good luck with the premium keyboard friend ;)
