I work as an auto detailer and I wonder if I can put a ceramic coating on it like I can with cars. It attaches itself to the factory clear coat to improve shine and durability.

.... If I were you I won't do it... Car body's and phone body are different

That protruding camera! Geez, why Apple? Make the device 1 mm thicker, keep it all flush, clean lines (plus added benefit of more battery charge).

Matt black, not gloss (except if the material was ceramic or glass).

Interesting. I like your thinking on ceramics. Makes you wonder why a more durable coating wasn't applied.

I could be wrong but I just think it's the nature of anything gloss. High shine = high chance for micro abrasions. I'm not sure you could get that high gloss look using a material that won't scratch. Yes, cars don't scratch as much but you aren't putting your hands on them all day.

Anyone remember the iPhone3GS in black? Is it safe to assume the glossy black will appear like that iPhone (outside of the 3GS being plastic)?

going to be just like the 3G/3GS models again when you take it out of it's case.
Oofff. I forgot about that. Your comment solidified my decision on black. It's honestly better to just leave it out of the case and obtain normal wear and tear than pull it out of a case where sand and dirt has been rubbing it. Those days were awful.

I did wonder if a ceramic coating would be effective. In theory it would apply fine as it can be used on metal trim etc, depending on the product. I wonder if it would last less time due to our hands natural acids etc?

I was also wondering if you could finely polish it, but then you don't know how deep the anodising goes etc.

The more videos I see I don't like the jet black! The matte looks much more sleek in my opinion the :apple: on the back sticks out more too love the contrast! 128 black for me! :);)

Here's some great side by side photos of the two color options.

This is the pic that sealed my decision. I had already favorited the jet black, but now will switch to matte black.

Honestly matte black is the black iPhone I think we have all been wanting since the iPhone 5 black! Super excited ;)

Yeah, I like Jet Black more, matte's colour looks like it was smeared with black shoe paint.

Ah you know what, screw it I'm going with the jet black. It reminds me to much of the iPhone 4 to not go with it. If it gets scratched up oh well, chances are as usual I will drop it and shatter the screen 2-3 times and get either the screen replaced or the whole device as usual with apple care.

In regards to the scratches, it's not like the phone is going to scratch on its own. Just take care of it and you should be fine.

Even taking care of the device, it's going to get scratched and scuffed. Inevitable. I don't use cases and I like putting my phone down on the table, desk or in the car holder without having to take care not to risk scratching it.

I wonder if polish will help. I wouldn't be surprised if the community finds some kind of solution that works.

Not sure about everyone else but the last thing I want to be doing, is worrying about what type of polish I can use on my mobile device to clean it up. Lol

However, I am sure that will be a thing.

I'm definitely getting the jet black colour, just get a case for it, I've ordered a transparent case off of amazon for £5.99

iPhone 4 is high gloss, black and white, but no scratches. It's got to be the material choice, I think.
