You can see what scratches will look like on Jet Black version. Verge has a picture of one of the demo phones at the event that already has scratches on the back.

yea im ninety percent there on the matte black i prefer to use my phone without a case seems like the logical choice plus its more understated and the jet black does look a little plasticy from certain angles like others have stated .... 90 percent hehehe

This is my take on the black vs jet black.

Glossy - highly susceptible to scratches and scuffs
Matte - more resilient, but not as flashy

Did anyone have a shiny 3G/3GS when they bought their next phone? If so, the jet black is for you.

Honestly I don't even think the jet black will scratch that badly.

The 3G/3GS did scratch easier than the 6, but it wasn't horrible.

Plus this is new coating technology being used, it's not like apple went back to the same housing as the 3G.

That being said, I think I'm Going to with the matte because i like the look of it. More stealth mode, than flashy.

I love the black and finish of the Note 7 so if in person jet black is anything like that then that's what I'll be going with.

I'm more of a matte black person. The shiny black is just too shiny and ostentatious. I don't know I'm just not too crazy about Jet Black.

This will differentiate people that want to "show off" their money through their phones. Yea i paid 100$ more for my phone ... haha
i think its cuz there will be a higher demand for that color so people will just pay more, kind of a sly way to increase profits; or that phone just cost more to make(probably) im not mad tho

Really nice to see a return of true black for the iPhone color, away from the Spay Gray they've been doing for couple years now. So, which one are you getting and why?

Black looks stealthy to me like the iPhone 5 black.
Jet black looks like it may have a problem with grease/smears, fingerprints, dust etc. BUT it could also look amazing, hard to tell from pictures. Maybe like the iPhone 4/4s black.

Could you add a poll to the OP?

not necessary, apple created that demand ( i am hello who wont like more money? i certainly would). Only reason they restrict Jet black to higher tiers just supply vs demand. supply is low (since they yield very low batches of good iphones from the whole batch because of the process) so the good housing are being fitted with higher tier which makes perfect sense that way your not* gonna get 1000 jet blacks for 32 since its 100 bucks cheaper, it does separate stones from grains tho.

speaking of show off, some people will get it for just for it, and some will get since they are getting 128gbs anyway since all my previous phones are 64gb and i cant transfer the backups from it to an 32gb so yea.

It costs the same as regular iPhone 7, the only difference is that there is no 32 GB option.

That protruding camera! Geez, why Apple? Make the device 1 mm thicker, keep it all flush, clean lines (plus added benefit of more battery charge).

Matt black, not gloss (except if the material was ceramic or glass).

Interesting. I like your thinking on ceramics. Makes you wonder why a more durable coating wasn't applied.

Check out the Sony Z5, which doesn't have a protruding cam, because its thicker... it seriously look too bulky because of that, especially when its that big a screen.. most phone makers have realized that, and thats why most of them (and not only apple) are protruding it.

I like that jet black. I'm going to pre-order it for sure but I'm curious to see it in person. Looks nice!
It's no surprise to me the most expensive and a social filter color get black gets the largest thread. Reminds me of the Rose Gold thread.

People human nature is based on social filters hey look at me I have a Jet Black iPhone 7 I have coined a phrase for it Floss the Gloss.

This has me leaning towards jet black. Fingerprints and little scratches will drive me crazy, but I'll only have it a year and I've had matte phones for years. A change for 12 months will be nice.

I agree. It actually reminds me a lot of the Samsung Galaxy phones. They get fingerprints but all you need to do is wipe it on your pants or like I said earlier, stick it under the faucet.

Also, I had the Galaxy S7 Edge for 3 months which had a glossy, glass feel to the back and I only had one very small microscratch and i used it without a case for 3 months. Just make sure you're setting your phone down gently and not tossing it on a table. If you're more rough than that, you should be using a case for your phone no matter which one you order.

I saw Apple's "fancy" description on how it's made, but I'm still confused. Can somebody confirm- what material exactly is the back? Is it metal with a shiny coat over it? It's not glass with a coating right?

what? I'm not sure I understand your post. I will likely get the jet black because I like the color. I couldn't care less what others think of my phone choices. I don't buy things because of status symbol. I buy because I like. And Jet Black at 128GB or 256GB is the same price as the other color options at those capacity levels.

Another thought...I predict more clear cases will sell this year for the iPhone.

Clear case will protect it from scratching, and keep fingerprints to a minimum, but will still allow you to enjoy either black.

I have a few hours left to decide (3AM...groan). I want the jet black, but I'm not sure if the fingerprints or 'micro' scratches would ruin it for me.

Also, wouldn't the jet black be more slippery?
