Just by curiosity, do you think the "matte" black's aluminum is the same as the the 6s? Is there any chance it might me harder? Cuz my 6S+ (and my 6 from 2y ago have little dents on the corners....hoping for a stronger material..

It's the same 7000 series aluminum that the 6s/6s+ is made of. It's pretty rigid but yeah, it'll dent on you if you have some impacts.

Last minute change?
Yeah it's more down to the reviews of the look more than the scratches. It just looks better for me personally. Could always change my mind down the line but it does look good in the latest reviewers

To be fair both look really good, but the black doesn't look as dark which is why I've gone for the jet black.

"My only major criticism with the iPhone 7 is how little the design has changed. It's nearly identical to the iPhone 6s from last year and the iPhone 6 before that. While the iPhone 7 looks great on its own, it's disappointing to see Apple's designs leapfrogged by Samsung's gorgeous Galaxy S7 and Galaxy Note 7. (When it doesn't explode, of course.)

Apple used to pride itself on pushing design standards forward, with the rest of the industry attempting to copy or catch up. Apple's rivals have perfected their designs, but its response was to release the same look for the third year in a row.

I know it might sound superficial to focus on design so much, but it's something users take seriously, especially on a device they carry around and use all the time. It's hard get excited about something new when it looks very similar to what you've seen before.

Still, there are some slight changes. Those unsightly antenna lines on the back have been moved to the edge so they're not very noticeable. The camera bump is also significantly larger to accommodate a new camera sensor that takes better photos in low light. And there are two great new colors: Jet Black and matte black.

The Jet Black is the most striking color, and I bet it's the one most people will choose to show off the fact they have the iPhone 7. It's so shiny that you can literally see your reflection in it, and it feels slick in the hand.

It's also a fingerprint magnet. Simply holding this thing for a few seconds covers it in smudges, and Apple has warned that scratches may show up easily. So if you go with the Jet Black option, get a case. Jet Black is also only available in the higher storage tiers, 128 GB or 256 GB, which cost $100 and $200 more than the base models, respectively.

I like the matte black look a lot better though. It's made from anodized aluminum and has a futuristic look to it, like something Batman would use. If you're having trouble choosing between Jet Black and matte black, trust me — go with matte."

Okay, thanks Steve Kovach. Matte black it is. Shoots up from 60% to 75%.

Nah. Black onyx Note7 ftw! ;) 99.9%, bomb or no bomb.

The reviewer didn't tell me anything new that I didn't assume before. I need scratch test for both. What matters if the color underneath is different and how hard could each black option take being scratched because I am very careful with my phones anyway.

I don't care about fingerprints. Seconds to wipe off. I am not that much of an insecure OCD wussy. Deep scratches with a different color underneath is not something you can wipe clean. Be stuck like that forever. Metal isn't all that to me. When it is damaged, it looks horrendous too. Moreso than plastic. And it can generate too much heat.

75% favors matte
25% favors jet

1% maybe getting it. ;) Rather get the white Mi 5 before an iPhone. The jet black iPhone 7 is really just a copycat of the black Xiaomi Mi 5.

After getting excited getting whatever black iPhone 7, boredom will settle in after a week or so. Nothing really to be excited after awhile except a fresh new paint job. *shrugs*

I believe they didn't change the design much this year because next year is the 10 year anniversary and they are saving it all for that. so no 7s next year. straight to iPhone 8 with lots of changes in design etc. this yea was just a step gap for them

You know we've had glossy jet black iPhones before, namely the black iPhone 3G/3GS and black iPhone 4/4s, and people had no problem rocking these naked.

Ha, I had the 3GS and boy was that scratched after a while. It would literally scratch just from sitting on its back on a table.

Thats entirely not true, the process in which the 3G's plastic back was colored black and the way they plate the new iPhone 7s Jet black finish is completely different as well

That Matthew guy is a fool. So puts it in his pocket with keys just to see.

It seems these guys were trying their hardest to get the phone scratched so they can get clicks.

Im grateful for that - its a real life test of something that could and does actually (accidentally or not) happen. If it scratches from that its too scratchy in my book.

Keep in mind a glossy phone can scratch even from an empty pocket if there are tiny grains of sand (that can be hard and sharp as a shard of diamond) in there. I learned that the hard way with my iPhone 4 and its glass back. Im way to OCD to accept anything like that so matte it is.

The point still stands. The black iPhone 3G/3GS attracted fingerprints because of the glossy "jet black" finish, despite the different material.

Plastic is also easier to scratch than aluminum. I think the jet black should be fine. Either way I'll be getting a clear skin on it

After just five days — more than half of which I’ve spent using the matte black iPhone 7 Plus — this jet black iPhone 7 has a few “micro abrasions”, to use Apple’s own term. I can only see them when I’m looking for them, and only when I reflect light off the surface at the perfect angle, but they’re there. This is after two days of careful use, and never putting it in a pocket that contains anything else. The back surface of this phone shows more wear after (effectively) two days of use than my space gray 6S does after nearly a year

Jet black looks absolutely gorgeous. Very seamless. Must buy for me. Black has nothing on Jet black. You can still see the antenna bands for the black

I originally preordered the JB but after looking at pictures and watching a few videos I decided to cancel and go with matte. The JB just looks TOO shiny to me and will be a smudge and fingerprint magnet (more so than the matte) plus with me deciding to make the switch I'll be able to get mine on Friday!

The more and more unboxings I personally think the JB looks cheap. It's just me but I hate shiny devices. The matte imo looks way more premium and sleek. Can't wait to get my hands on my Black 7+ Friday!!

Agreed. The matte looks sleek and stealthy to see and the more I looked at the JB i thought of the iPhone 3g

That's exactly what's it's like. I plan to go to the Apple Store on launch day to check the JB out so I can get a feel for it in person but I'm super pumped for my black to get here.

You seriously think he did that because he wanted clicks? You must not know who Matthew Panzarino is, but he is actually a very well respected journalist. And his reviews are for every day people, people who don't think twice about which pocket they put their phone into.

I know a lot of you OCD type getting matte to avoid the jet black scratching mess but you should still protect the matte to a degree. If you drop it on carpet or any other surface like that, you may get shiny spots that won't come out. I remember when I had the matte black razr back in the day I dropped it on carpet at the mall and it left these marks that never came out.

- It totally looks like a single object OMG!!!!

* Puts phone down and you can clearly see where shiny glossy back ends and screen begins. *
