These things bring out this weird, subtly racist side to a lot of people. Like when Richard Sherman gets called a thug. Its not to my taste, I can’t imagine being the sort of person who would like it. But I have no judgement towards people who choose to buy one - unlikely to be celebrities who have someone to advise them on stylistic choices (have you ever seen a celeb with one of the gold and diamond iPhones?) - and I hope they enjoy it.

Edit: For example, the post above this.

Buyers of this product are not getting it for the investment. Not every purchase has to be an investment.

Things like this will definitely sell-- it's how the very wealthy stay on the bleeding edge of tech without compromising the prestige of their jewelry.

What will they do in 1-3 years? Buy a new one, because they can easily afford it. It's not rocket science.

What is sad is that most 'new money' wealthy as well as quite of few of the 'old money' type are the same kind of sheep that the rest of the population is, easily told what they should desire. The Kardashians, Hiltons, Jay-Zs and multitude of other rappers, athletes, movie stars, etc., have no taste and will believe that this is what they should get.

Like these ridiculous $1000 pair of shoes.

There are people who buy expensive useless things like this every day. Paris Hiltons, Kardashians, etc.

We just don't get it, because we are the peasants of the world.

Please don't refer to those people as if they are to be envied or admired. They are solely defined buy the inverse relationship between their wealth and sense of taste and class.

Let's just talk the plain OEM Gold version for a moment. There has to be a way to just upgrade the guts on the gold version. You know, send it to Apple and instead of buying a completely new gold watch they put in new guts & you pay for the new guts for an upgrade. Right? Or...I'm thinking the gold buyers will send in their gold one to Apple for an upgrade and they send you a new gold watch and refurb the old one with new guts?

I'm just trying to figure out what the upgrade program is like for these expensive ones. Because I can't see upgrading this tech in gold every year or two years.

I'm sure if you can afford the gold ones dropping another 5k to buy a new one every upgrade cycle won't be a struggle. But what happens to the old ones? Can there be a market for used gold apple watches with stale tech? Would you buy a used gold apple watch with 5 year old tech inside while the gold on the outside retains or increases value.

Look, I love watches. I have a couple of heirloom watches I paid a pretty penny for myself. But I knew the guts were going to outlast me. They were something I'd put in my will.

The tech in these watches won't out last me. I know in a couple of years Apple will put in new sensors and better batteries. The chips will be faster. They'll add mini retina screens and overall they'll get thinner. Perhaps the watches will even have their own carrier radios. So the tech in these gold watches will have a shelf life unless there is a way to upgrade the guts.

Also with the way updates to ios work how long do you think the os on these will be on the upgrade path? What about phone connectivity and the upgrade path? Will the watch be compatible with 2,3, or 4, years of iPhones & iPads? How will that impact the used market? Because in 4 years the gold part of the watch will be worth more but the guts and OS may require you still have to use it with an older iPhone or ipad?

I guess I'm struggling with the concept of tech coupled with precious metals. Yeah...I know there are 3rd party gold and diamond iphones and such. But I discount that because there will always be a 3rd party blinging out stuff for the ultra rich. But this is Apple creating an OEM gold device. I'm interested in their thought pattern on this.

Let's play with this scenario...what if Apple created an OEM gold 24kt iPhone. What would you expect the upgrade cycle to be on such a device? Knowing what we know about Apple pushing the envelope on tech year after year with thinner form factors, screens, etc. What about resale once the tech goes stale? Regular phones decrease in value relative to tech. But if the phone is gold...the shell increases in value while the guts decrease the value.

i'm surprised that Apple would allow a third party to customize its new product to do such horrible thing

It's perfectly acceptable to mock people who a) have no taste, and b) are primarily obsessed with flaunting their wealth in the gaudiest possible manner. Race has nothing to do with it, although in general it is a subculture dominated by low class uneducated people who have suddenly come into a lot of wealth. I've yet to see a race that's immune to this phenomenon.

It clearly says they are plated.

Yeah, I re-read the Brikk stuff after I saw your previous post. Their main watch page says "plated", but the detail pages for individual models (which is what I read first) don't say "plated":

"IT IS AVAILABLE IN 24K YELLOW GOLD, 18K PINK GOLD AND 950 PLATINUM."

A more reputable company would have made sure to say "plated" in the same paragraph.

I don't think Apple has any legal recourse. If you buy something, you can modify it and resell it. Probably this void's Apple's warranty.

The very notion of taking an an 18K gold electronic watch and plating it in 24k gold is so meta-moronic-nouveau-riche it makes my head hurt.

I would hope it is an oversight and will get fixed as soon as they notice the mistake.

Based on their starting prices I would assume they are using the stainless steel model as the donor watch.

At that price, I'd expect it to outperform my Casio. Got it when I was 8 and was second hand when it was given to me. Never even had to change the battery. It's been a total trooper over the years, surviving everything I've been through.

Seriously, does anyone actually see the appeal in these very expensive watches that are nothing but overpriced fashion items posing as lukewarm phones with horrible battery life, more fragile materials and a day of obsoletion? Really?

It might have escaped your notice, but people aren't only buying Apple Watch so they can tell time.

The Apple Watch can do a ton your Casio can't do. Your Casio doesn't need charging every night. To write off every function of the Apple Watch because your watch has better battery life doesn't seem logical, yet tons of people are doing it.

A Nokia brick from 2001 would last a week on a single charge. An iPhone lasts about a day.

I don't get the gold Apple watch at all. I collect watches and can understand if someone wants to spend a lot of money on a nice swiss mechanical watch. They are not obsolete after a year when they come out and can hold there value and be passed down for generations. Some even go up. The Gold Iwatch, assuming its will start at 5K, will be obsolete in a year or 2 with the new models being a smart watch. You've basically got close to $1k in scrap gold you can melt down. If it were some sort of modular design where you could replace the internals with the newest one it may be different but that won't happen. I can only see people buying these that have an infinite supply of money where they can just toss it in the trash when the latest one comes out. I can't see one on ebay for $4k 5 years down the road where it will be completely obsolete.

Im having a hard time justified the rumored $1k for the SS version. There are a lot of advancements that will be made with each model and therefore after about 2 years even the 1k watch will be obsolete.

Im the type that buys the new iPhone every year as it is easy to sell the current one and upgrade to the newest with the carrier discounts etc. Only out a couple hundred each upgrade. With the iWatch this will get very expensive. Ill most likely pass on the watch as I prefer a real swiss mechanical any day of the week.

Plating anything that is practically used in 24k gold is moronic. 24k gold is very soft and doesn't last long when it's handled. Only use this for things that are stored in a display cabinet and never leave it (if you really need 24k gold).

Well people said the iPod was an overpriced fashion item. People said the iPad was just a big iPod Touch and would never sell. People said Macs would never be used by anyone but professionals. Most people are wrong about Apple's products not becoming successful or not appealing to the masses.

If folks go to the site the less blinged out versions look a lot better. And actually this creates an interesting point. If Brik can take a sport watch and then gold plate it so it looks pretty darn close to solid gold Edition, Apple might have some competition. If Apple is selling the Solid Gold for $10,000 and Brik is selling the gold plated (with a few diamonds) for $8,000, that is interesting.

And by the way, Brik seems like a real business. Their $10,000 gold plated iPhones sell. And that fact does not surprise me at all.
